I got a message saying I can update to 2.3.4. Should I? I'm planning to root my phone later on like after 5 months. Can I root if I update?

Find out if there is an existing 2.3.4 root for your device. If not, you may not want to upgrade. If there is, updating won't prevent you from rooting. Just google "{device} 2.3.4 root" or something like that, you should be able to find something. Find out as well what features are added by 2.3.4 for your specific phone (manufacturers/carriers may change the official feature set of updates, so it might not be the same as a "regular" 2.3.4 update), to see if it's even worth upgrading.

Is there any particular reason you don't want to root now? Because if not, I would advise as suprgamr232 suggested and root the phone now and then you can install a rooted 2.3.4 ROM (either a full custom ROM or if there is one available, a rooted version of the stock ROM)

If you're on 2.3.3, no, root with zergRush, then do as suprgamr suggested.

If you're on 2.3.2, yes, I'm fairly sure zergRush still works with 2.3.4.

Why does it matter if he's on 2.3.3 or 2.3.2? Surely if zergRush works with 2.3.4, it'll work regardless of what he is on now?
Because I'm certain it works on 2.3.3 and not 100% that it does with 2.3.4

Did a little research and I'm almost certain that I can update officially and then root. I also came across this:

I'm currently on xperia play r800i @ 2.3.3.

So can I update to 2.3.4 and then root?

Yeah, looks like zergRush is definitely compatible with 2.3.4, so you are "safe" to install the update and be able to root later. But if Sony push out an ICS [Ice Cream Sandwich] update (i.e. 4.0) before you get round to rooting, and you still want to be able to root, don't install the update until there is a rooting method for ICS (I'd estimate it won't take long, people are probably already looking for/have found exploits that can be used and are just waiting till ICS is more widely spread before releasing)

Are roms basically a firmware (e.g. 2.3.3) which are created by people that are intended to work on rooted phones and do they have ALL the features that a regular firmware should have?

A ROM is a full copy of the system software (including all the apps installed by default).

There are "custom" ROMs and "stock" ROMs.

Stock ROMs are the official ROMs released by the manufacturer (sometimes in conjunction with carrier). Typically stock ROMs have some manufacturer added customizations (e.g. HTC has Sense, Samsung has TouchWiz etc.)

Custom ROMs are unofficial ROMs made by hackers/developers and released for free online. These ROMs can add features, remove crapware preinstalled in stock ROMs, fix security bugs, bring new versions of Android to phones earlier than they are officially ported, offer performance boosts, theme the interface etc. Some popular custom ROMs include CyanogenMod and MIUI (MIUI has an iPhone-esque look and feel to it).

Custom ROMs will have all official features of any given version of Android, plus some extra features and goodies. They may not have all the features of a stock ROM though, if the manufacturer added stuff. (Usually if a feature of a stock ROM is perceived as "good", it'll make it into most custom ROMs for that device).

Roms are like the type of Android OS. There are different firmware versions (for example, ICS is 4.0 while most recent phones have some version of 2.3) and roms can be made out of any version. Generally most roms will have most of the features regular firmware has, some will have various problems (for example for some roms the camera doesn't work or 4G doesn't work), and some will have even more features. Along with Roms you can also grab custom kernels which will give you some more features (for example, SBS, HAVS, etc etc). If you go to xda-developers you can learn all about rooting and what terms stand for and everything. If you have questions on rooting, usually xda will have the answers that you need already posted.

EDIT: :ninja: 'd sort of. I like SifJar's answer more than mine. But I still suggest going to xda-developers.

This question is a bit unrelated to the topic. But I'll just ask quickly:
When your using the internet browser and you download a video, where is that video stored and are there other locations it will store on automatically without u even knowing? That used to be the case for me when I had a s60v5 vivaz. I would sometimes find the old videos that I thought I deleted in the sd card in a folder well hidden. I think it was in the datamgr folder then u had to go in the contents folder.

They would usually be in your sd-card under the folder "Download(s)". When you delete them AFAIK they are permanently deleted so that should be no problems. If you have a stock video app it should search through all your folders automatically and then you should be able to delete them from there (not 100% sure on this, my phone lets me do this though so why not all?)
