I put this in the "Ask" section, but I'm not sure that was right so if I broke some rule about posting I didn't mean to. I could really use a hand with this and I'd like to learn a bit more about all this.

First of all, I'm sorry this is so long, but I am completely new to this and I have been searching for an answer so please don't think I haven't looked. I need someone to talk down on my level if you could - I have been reading the Complete Softmod Guide over and over but am kind of confused.

I have a wii with V4.3U. It has serial #LU378953298. Model RVL-001 (2006).
Using my SD Card I have installed (from the complete softmod guide) the HomeBrewChannel (1.0.8 IOS58 v24.32) using the LetterBomb and the Bootmii.
I used the Bootmii to make a copy of my NAND and Keys and saved them to my computer.

I am doing all this because I am tired of having to "rebuy" games I already owned because my kids break them (they aren't rough with them, but I have had a couple crack in the middle and then they can't be read).

While reading about how to store copies of the games on my computer and what app to use to play them I came across the StartPatch app which said it was good because it prevented updates that can occur from games. I figure I better do that but the problem is - I haven't ever run an app off of the homebrew channel.

When I went to the StartPatch page I downloaded the file for the v4.3 (it said I only needed A cIOS rev12 or higher for v4.1 or v4.3 so I didn't do that, and it said I only needed a trucha enabled IOS 36 installed for v4.0 and v4.1 so I haven't done any of that). When I downloaded the file, all I got was StarPatch 4.3.1U.rar. I didn't get this "boot.dol" file the instructions say I needed (actually, the tutorials I read said I'd probably get some other files too but I only got the one). I downloaded it from http://wiibrew.org/wiki/StartPatch#Download.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how to put it on my sd card so I put it in a folder I named "start patch installer".

Can someone tell me what I need to do. I really don't want my wii bricked because it gets updated or something by accident. I'm looking forward to playing the new Zelda when it comes out.

Any advice would be appreciated

Don't ever install startpatch no matter what happens . It have a very high chance of bricking your wii even if you follow all the instructions. Instead you should use priiloader which can do the samething but in a safer way (its still not 100% safe but its the best option avalible right now .

Now since your wii isn't hacked yet I suggest you use modmii to hack your wii & it will install priiloader as part of the process . Just download it , answer all the questions it asks you & then follow the instructions it gives you and you should be fine .

Yes what you did was hacking but its till not fully hacked yet (I meant to tell you that in the previous post but somehow I only typed its not hacked). You still need to install a cios & chose a usb loader to be able to play your backups. I just suggested using modmii since you seemed to know very little about what you are doing & modmii is the simplest way to go . If you will use modmii just skip the part about installing the homebrew channel and follow the rest . If you insist in doing it manually or already installed those stuff and only need priiloader then here it is http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Priiloader . Just download it , run the installer , put this file in the sd card root & go to hacks in priiloader menu & enable skip disc update .

I didn't do anything else yet. I appreciate the help - I'll use the modmii and skip the homebrew channel. The only question I have is I did put the bootmii on (as an ios - it said it couldn't as boot2 because of boot1), do I leave that on or do I need to remove it for priiloader?

I just posted answer in that ask corner. Anybody knows how to delete it? I don't want to get any warnings from this board.
Have a good weekend.

I have heard of far more bricks from Priiloader than StartPatch, in fact I have never heard of any from StartPatch. Dunno what The_Dragon_Master is talking about.

However, something EXTREMELY basic needs to be explained here: A RAR file is an archive, like a ZIP file. You extract said file using an archive manager such as 7-zip. Inside, you will find a boot.dol, an icon.png and a meta.xml, most likely all inside a folder within the RAR. To run the app from HBC, you make a folder called "apps" on the root of your SD card, and place the folder from the RAR inside that folder.

So you should have on your SD card a folder called "apps" and inside that one called something like "startpatch", and inside that, a boot.dol, icon.png and meta.xml.

Then the app will show up in HBC. (This is just a general guide to running apps. I am neither advising you to use StartPatch nor advising you not to. You should do more research before deciding, because it has the potential to be dangerous)

You don't hear much about them because people rarely use it anymore . When it first came out I remember reading about several bricks it caused while unlike priiloader it doesn't have any protective functions so even if it screws something small you will get a fully bricked wii . The reason priiloader bricks seems more is thanks to every guide in the internet making it a neccery step for hacking your wii so every person following those guides install it & a small % end up with a pricked wii while nearly no guide mentions startpatch anymore . In any case both are risky and can brick your wii but I perfer risking installing something that can help you recover from a brick & got more functions .

I'm sorry, I looked and I don't see an option to delete it. If someone knows how let me know and I'll do it.

As I said no need to delete bootmii just leave it .

so if priiloader and startpatch both can cause me major problems, is there a safe way to add something which will prevent it from asking for updates (I know I can just ignore them, but my kids might accidentally hit update if asked if they don't know).

I use startpatch and never got a problem, it only could cause a brick if you have applied Priiloader hacks to your system menu beforehand.
In other words, never mix Priiloader with Startpatch.

I use both Startpatch and priiloader. The thing is priiloader changes the location of the system menu and startpatch wasn't designed to deal with that. So if you are going to use startpatch you should install and use it to enable all the hacks you want and then install priiloader and use it from that point onward without using startpatch.

Thanks guys, I'm learning alot. I used the modmii program and loaded exactly what it said and how it said it and everything seems to have worked fine. It looks like priiloader does what I want it to do. I'll keep learnng though and hopefully by going slowly I won't screw anything up. Appreciate all the help

I've never bricked a wii with startpatch and I've used it at least 100 times...

On the other hand, I've bricked 4 wiis with various versions of priiloader. I haven't tried the latest 0.7 though, so can't comment on brick rates there. I only use priiloader when a wii can't run bootmii/boot2.

What he said is perfectly accurate. (And I see no pun there.)

If you are going to install Priiloader, there is no sense in using StartPatch. Priiloader handles patches much better since you can enable or disable them whenever you want, instead of having to do an uninstall/install of hacks files.
