Expect half those features to be gone by a year or two :P

Hey, at least they have the features at launch and we don't have to wait months for a fucking shop to actually pop up.

Seriously, post shit that actually makes sense instead of posts that make you come off like an uneducated dunce.
Except that there is historical precedent for saying this. Features that were initially advertised as being a part of the PS3 were taken away in later hardware revisions. If FireGrey is truly a "dunce" for alluding to this fact (jokingly, given the smley), what does that make you? I've seen you play watchdog for Sony every time a poster brings this up and frankly, it makes you look ridiculous. Sony, as well as every corporation, does not have the ability to exude sunbeams out of every orifice. Likewise, they do not deserve to be defended all the time. The sooner you realize this, the better.
Shitty post, shitty answers. To maintain the level of the conversation (shitty level).

Seriously, when I don't know what to say, I don't say anything at all. This post isn't about the historical fuck-ups of Sony.

god forbid they remove a feature little to nobody used and its costing them alot of money to support it
then everybody goes apeshit pretending they used it just because its getting removed
even otheros+ on jailbroken ps3's, nobody uses it

They removed OtherOS, a feature that wasn't nearly as necessary as say a web browser or video playback. PS2 compatibility was removed and gave players a console that was half the price of the original (plus you can just buy an old PS3 if you want it).

I'm defending their electronics, not their ethics. Sony are a bunch of money hungry Scrooge McDucks who laugh at the little man. Welcome to the industry. But I still play with their stuff because it's fun.

same difference.

they made douche moves, and there's no two ways around that. in your post right here, you're not defending any electronics, you're defending the poor decisions that sony made. which has you defending a corporation that you don't even work for.

also ps2's sell for $99 new. they cost next to nothing to include in a ps3.

$99.

manufacturing and parts will cost about a third (up to a half) of that per console. it's not going to be much more because they're profiting from each ps2 sold. so they stripped out about $33-45 worth of material and manufacturing cost. and that's without even going on about the ps2 emulation where they emulated one of the chips and left one other in. how much money did sony save commenting out some code?

arguing that taking out the ps2 components is what caused the huge price drop is a lie. it was a small contributor. the real discount came from improved manufacturing processes and cheaper parts. for sony to knock $100 off the retail value, how much do you think they had to knock off the actual cost? shipping and advertising costs hadn't changed.

i like you're asking me for proof, but not the other guy. the claim that ps2 removal cut the ps3 price in half is far more ludicrous than my claim. sony gutted the ps3 to push ps3 games, which were not doing well at the time.

otherOS doesn't cost sony a penny to keep in the firmware. they never offered support for that option. the removal of it was simply a douche move. and had they allowed full computing power with otherOS, there's a good chance that the whole jailbreak debacle would have never happened. and before we hear the stupid "no one was using it anyway" argument, let's consider a couple things.

how often are anti-lock brakes actually engaged?
- the fact that a feature isn't used often does not equate to the removal of said feature being acceptable.
researchers (plural) would buy 10's (20-40) of ps3s and use the otherOS feature to create a very cheap, very powerful supercomputing cluster.
- although you may not have used it, plenty of researchers bought enough ps3s and did use it to make your "nobody uses it" argument invalid

disclosure: i own a ps3 phat 80 GB (with a 320 inserted). ps2 BC had already been removed by the time i had the money for a ps3, and i had to resort to craigslist to find one. feature rot, as i call it, is never acceptable under any circumstances.

It's good to know you're a great Sony engineer who just thinks slapping a PS2 into a PS3 will be equal in cost. In the end the console was still half the price in the end.

OtherOS was removed for purely "protection" reasons (by "protection" I mean protecting their interest) but no one used it, boo hoo.

Sony made an alternative to the PS3 so it could sell more. If you want to play your PS2 games, go buy a PS2 or go buy an older PS3. It shouldn't be a console's duty to play games of another console, it's purely a fluff feature.

EDIT: Let's not mention that a lot of companies and systems aren't backwards compatible. Gamecube to the N64, N64 to the SNES, the new Wiis ditch backwards compatibility for a cheaper price, even the Xbox 360 has playback issues. It happens. Current generation systems are designed for current generation games.
