Z-GX
by cheloruiz79
https://github.com/hotker79/Z-GX

Forked from and based on the great foundation of Seta GX (project still active), by fadedled
https://github.com/fadedled/seta-gx

Controller support:
  • Gamecube controller.
  • Wiimote.
  • Wii Classic Controller. (there is a bug currently where the directional Down is always pressed). (Fixed in build 20260801)
  • Wii U Pro Controller. (there is a bug currently where the directional Down is always pressed) (Fixed in build 20260801)

Notes for Z-GX:
  • App folder: root://apps/ZGX/
  • Covers folder: root://ZGX/art
    • 128x192 PNG with the same exact name as your game file.
  • BIOS folder: root://ZGX/bios/bios.bin
  • Games folder: root://ZGX/games
    • Games can be CHD or CUE+BIN, the latter is the most compatible, some games do not work on CHD yet.
  • Backup RAM folder: root://ZGX/saves
- Since build 20260803B and onwards, 240p mode is enabled by pressing Z+Y (Gamecube controller) / ZL+ZR (Wii Classic Controller / Wii U Pro Controller) on the emulator menu. This will create an empty 240p.txt file inside root://ZGX. It will delete it again when you disable it. Reload the emulator to save the setting and activate it on next boot.
- The 4M RAM cartridge is always OFF at boot. Enable it only when your game needs it.

Recommended BIOS: Saturn USA 1.00 (most compatible)

Controls - emulator game list:
  • D-pad Up/Down = move through the list
  • Hold D-pad Up/Down = continuous scroll (fast)
  • D-pad Left/Right = jump by page
  • A = start selected game
  • B = exit to loader
  • L+R = toggle 4M RAM cartridge ON/OFF
  • Z+Y = toggle 240p for supported displays (Gamecube controller)
  • ZL+ZR = toggle 240p for supported displays (Wii Classic Controller / Wii U Pro Controller)

Controls - in-game:
  • Start+Z = exit game back to emulator (Gamecube controller)
  • Home = exit game back to emulator (Wii Classic Controller / Wii U Pro Controller)
  • L+R+Start = toggle sound (muting gains some fps) . Shows "SND OFF".

QoL suggestions for Z-GX:

- 4:3 or stretched 16:9 aspect ratio setting.
- Enable/Disable FPS counter. (it is always enabled)
- Sub-folders support.
- Long name autoscroll on the list could be a bit faster. (IMPLEMENTED in build 20260803A)
- Option to pick any Saturn BIOS file.
- Turbo toggle to fast-forward.
- Selection of RAM/ROM cartridge type to use.

Known bugs:
- Toggling the sound OFF hangs the emulator.
- Saves are not working. (since 20260729 build)
- Title name on the game list disappears when it finishes scrolling.
- Have at least 24 games. Position the cursor in slot 000, 001, 002, 003, or 004, press right to go down one page. Now keep pressing Up like you wanted to go back to slot 014 or further, the list won't scroll, but the names will. You will only notice visually if you have your covers assigned.
- Cover files do not load when you start the emulator from a USB device, yet it will load them if a SD card with the files is inserted before emulator launch. (FIXED in build 20260803B)
- When you launch the emulator from USB, games/art on the device will be ignored if a SD card is also inserted with the same Z-GX folder structure. SD will be prioritized.
- 240p.txt file is not detected or generated when you launch the emulator from a USB device. (FIXED in build 20260803A)
- 240p mode is not working when you launch the emulator from a USB device. (FIXED in build 20260803B)

Hey there guys. Just did some more testing with the new fork. I've found that Christmas Nights into Dreams has some problems seeing the menus. But it gives a stack dump when you start loading a game. I found that Creature Shock Special Edition doesn't even load past the BIOS screen. And D loads the "Press Start" screen, but then won't go bast a black screen.

Also amazingly. Death Throttle plays the FMV at 47 FPS! That's the first FMV from the Saturn that I've seen play on my Wii U. That is fucking amazing. Great job man. And the game plays but the colors are all jacked the way Nights is. Simply amazing.

None of these are regressions mind you. Just things I've found through more testing.

And a request from my friend @ploggy. I tried installing your new forwarder on my NAND and I got an error. I installed it on my USB and that worked fine. But I went to look for it and I couldn't find it! I looked around, and it took the place of my FCEUX RX forwarder 😒 It occurs to me now, as it's been forever since I made a forwarder, that you have to use certain numbers when you create it. And if you use a number that another program does, it over writes it. I hate to ask you man, but could you please remake it using a different number? Maybe use a random number generator? Thanks man.

Great work guys. I've got some more testing to do and I'll post it as it comes.

Here's one with a new Title ID :)
Weird thing tho I tried it with this new fork and I got a DSI Error, but when I tried the build from the other thread that booted? I Only tried the once, dunno if it was just a one off crash. Needs confirmation.

Placebo effect. In these cases you can confirm it yourself, it is byte-per-byte an identical download. I mean, you can even compare the MD5 between the two dol files, or even the zip, as it is the same from the original post. Likely a one-off error, though I haven't had a DSI crash at boot, sometimes and very rarely the console hangs on a black screen when I load emulators or apps from the Homebrew Channel.

I'll replace the new forwarder and update with some more tested games later on the day.

Thanks a lot man! It doesn't seem to work if you install it on the NAND like your first one did. But it does work if you install it on the USB drive. Not sure what that's about. But it does work!
huh? I'm not sure, works fine from nand for me? what's the error say?

This will be the new structure, completely separate from the original. Tomorrow the next version will be released with the changes and some fixes for games. Thanks for the testing, it helps me a lot, and thanks to niuus for creating the new post. I've added all the suggestions, and we need a logo for the emulator. If anyone knows how to work with that, I'd appreciate it.

sd:/ZGX/games/ = your games (.chd, or .cue+.bin)
sd:/ZGX/bios/bios.bin = the BIOS (exact name: bios.bin)
sd:/ZGX/saves/ = saved games (backup RAM)
sd:/ZGX/art/ = box art (.png with the same name as the game)
sd:/ZGX/240p.txt = created/deleted automatically by the toggle (don't edit by hand)

Recommended BIOS: region-free v1.00 (most compatible)

--- CONTROLS: GAME LIST MENU ---

Up/Down = move through the list
Hold Up/Down = continuous scroll (fast)
Left/Right = jump by page
A or C = start selected game
A or C + hold R = start with FPS counter
B = exit to Homebrew Channel
L+R = toggle 4MB RAM cartridge (for KOF97, Street Fighter Alpha, etc.) - shows "CART 4MB:ON/OFF"
L+Y = toggle 240p for CRT displays - shows "240p:ON/OFF" (restart emulator to apply)

--- CONTROLS: IN-GAME ---

Start+Z = exit game to menu
L+R+Start = toggle sound (muting gains 10-15 FPS) - shows "SND OFF"

--- NOTES ---

- The 4MB cartridge starts OFF every boot (enable only if the game requires it)
- The 240p setting is remembered between sessions
- 240p applies after restarting the emulator, not instantly

This will be the new structure, completely separate from the original. Tomorrow the next version will be released with the changes and some fixes for games. Thanks for the testing, it helps me a lot, and thanks to niuus for creating the new post. I've added all the suggestions, and we need a logo for the emulator. If anyone knows how to work with that, I'd appreciate it.

Avoid using CHD yet; support is not complete. Many games only work in BIN/CUE format and not in CHD.

Thought you might need it. I have been making these logo concepts, let me know which one you like the most, so I can adjust the icon.png final proportions.

I made those inspired on the original Sega Saturn worldwide boxes:

I love the first one with the yellow background. Did you see the Arriva Saturn Bomberman video at 60fps? I tried to send you a direct message but it won't let me.

Does 8 players actually work yet? Like 4 GCCs and 4 classic controllers

With permission from @cheloruiz79, the latest release of Z-GX is now available on the first post. Be sure to read ALL the indications if you want to update.

4M RAM cartridge tests:
  • Dungeons & Dragons Collection - Shadow over Mystara (Japan). Working. Full speed. FMVs can't be seen. Character sprite is glitchy.
  • Fighter's History Dynamite (Japan). Detected, but not working. Boots, starts loading the game, but then it throws you to the Saturn BIOS.
  • Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter (Japan). Detected, but not working. Boots, but hangs on a black screen. Choppy FMVs.
  • Street Fighter Zero 3 (Japan). Not working. Boots, but hangs on a black screen.
  • X-Men vs. Street Fighter (Japan). Detected, but not working. Boots, but hangs on a black screen. Choppy FMVs.

Last edited by niuus,
Thanks for releasing this today. I've got all of the new folders arranged and that is all working fine. One question I have is that the BIOS still needs to be named BIOS.bin in the BIOS folder? But the main problem I have is that the WUPC, when its connected, it is constantly pressing down on the main menu screen. The Wiimote works fine. But when I plug in the Wii Pro Controller, I get the same thing. Also, when I leave the emulator and try to load it back, I get a stack dump. Does anyone else get this, or is this just me? Thanks guys!
