Critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV set to launch on Switch 2 in August

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? Known far and wide for its expanded free trial which nowadays allows you to play through not just the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward expansion, but also the more recent Stormblood and Shadowbringers expansions up to level 80 for free with no restrictions on playtime? Sure you have! And I'm sure you'll be excited to hear the game is making the leap over to the Nintendo Switch 2 in August.

Those wanting to play will need to buy the game on the Switch 2, and subsequently maintain an active subscription for the title. The first month of play will be something of an early access period to ensure server stability, and during this time you'll be able to play without a subscription. It's not quite as simple as other console releases though, with existing players requiring a secondary subscription to play on the Switch 2. You do at least get 50% off if you have an active subscription on a different platform, but it won't be ideal if you're just somebody wanting to take your existing characters on the go. One small silver lining however is the fact that you won't need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

imagine being so not interested in a game that you actively choose to go into a thread dedicated to an announcement about said game you have no interest in to let everyone else know how about said disinterest...the internet sure is a wonderful place

onto real complaints. of fucking course nintendo has to find a way to screw this up despite not being responsible for the game or publishing. having to pay double subscriptions in the case of something like someone who plays on both pc and switch is kinda bullshit even with the 50% discount on the switch version sub. I guess xbox players got fucked too when it came there having to pay for xbox online on top of the game sub so what was I supposed to expect

thats cool, all of the time i spent on this game was on controller as a healer and it was perfectly viable... at least, after a youtube video showing me how to set up the hidden menus properly

i wonder if ff16 has a chance of coming to switch 2

I only remember how the launch was literally SO BAD that investors were dumping stock in protest.

With someone would do that with bethesda, because those clowns haven't launched a FINISHED game in over 30 years.

Nah they are allowed to dislike it if they want i don't think most sane FFXIV players care. I like the game and have been playing since 2016 but one one thing that has always peeved me about it's community is that you're not allowed to have any criticism. Which is ironic considering the game is literally built upon criticism towards 1.0 hence the game being shitcanned and rebuilt.

It was so bad that the devs killed the game with fire to make way for the better version that they've built on since.

People were hoping the acquisition by Microsoft would fix that. The rest of us knew that would never happen. Todd's too busy huffing smoke from the "It Just Works" bong to consider releasing anything finished, especially since he knows there's an army of brainlessly-loyal modders willing to finish the game for free that he can exploit while still giving Microsoft their money.

For folks not happy about having to pay for a separate Sw2 sub, even at 50% off with an existing sub, let it be known that is still cheaper than playing the game with Xbox involved.

To play on Xbox, even if you play on PS5/PC, you have to have at least an Xbox Game Core sub, which is $10/month. So with a 180-day plan for Standard, that's $23/month.

To play only on Sw2, it's the typical $13/month for Standard, 180-day plan. But if you already have an existing sub to play on PS5/PC, you can get the Sw2 sub at 50% off, so that makes it $19.50/month.

So, $23/month to play on Xbox, and $13-$19.50/month to play on Sw2, Standard, 180-day plan.

i think you can play to lvl 70 now for free, its a pretty good story if you can get through 12 years worth of story line.
The worst part for any new player wanting to pick up the game is definitely getting through ARR. It's an endless barrage of fetch quest after fetch quest. It's only when you start getting to Heavensward the story and quests starts to pick up pace and starts getting good.

I think folks blaming Nintendo for this are probably looking in the wrong direction. Square Enix has spent many years milking their franchises with re-releases, ports and the like. Final Fantasy more than others. I would be extremely surprised if this wasn’t their decision! If anything, I bet they wish they did this from the start with the console ports.

I honestly would not be surprised if that was the case. XIV has pretty much been SquareEnix's cash cow for years, being a source of reliable revenue if their newest Final Fantasy missed quarterly marks. They'd definitely find ways to pull more money from multiple platforms if they could get away with it.

At least those who moan and complain about paying for NSO won't need to have it to play FFXIV - they'd just have to pay for the FFXIV subscription, which is much higher for the same durations.
