Reports indicate Sony's plans to move away from first-party PC releases

Since the release of the PlayStation 5 all the way back in 2020, Sony's strategy around first party games has shifted. Instead of maintaining a library of games exclusive to their consoles, they opted for a period of exclusivity, typically around two years, with a more widespread PC release following. Though a fantastic move in terms of larger gaming accessibility, it has lead to many avoiding the PlayStation platform altogether, with the lack of truly exclusive games taking away from a lot of the value it previously had. According to a Bloomberg however, this strategy may be about to change.

Sources familiar with Sony's plans have indicated their major single-player titles will be remaining exclusive, with online-focused titles like Marathon still seeing a more widespread release. There is yet to be an official statement from Sony on the topic, with Ghost of Yotei being the latest release that could be impacted by this change.

I wonder why Sony might be trying to roll back thier PC ports and making thier own games exclusives again to save thier floundering console that is only getting by through Sell-In and the MAU statistic they've been chasing for years now in a similar vein to making a PS5 model that's region locked to Japan after a certain newer device came out and did the same thing to a significant success...

It could be ONE OF NATURE'S MYSTERIES!

I guess it was bound to happen at some point... but why now? Hardware availability is worse than ever, deja vu to PS5 launch. If anything, it would be the worst time to do it now, by any logic.

Now that Xbox is committing AI sudoku, they've basically got a monopoly on high-end console gaming. Sure, less people will buy their games if they're exclusive to console (myself included), but there's more growth potential on their own platform than on Steam. Their market share is very likely to keep growing at this point, both because of ex-box and because of the ridiculous price increases for PC gaming hardware. I think they'll have an easier time mass producing affordable(-ish) consoles than the average joe would building one gaming PC.

And if it doesn't work out? They can always fall back to selling on Steam (again), and they'll be celebrated for it (again)

This move just makes sense imo, endlessly chasing YoY sales improvements this way was not sustainable and it probably leads to knockdown effects on console sales and etc. AFAIK PC sales of Playstation games only contibuted to 2% of their sales at most, so they probably decided that it was worth it to scale back on PC releases for these reasons. I don't think we'll ever really see a return to steam for anything but live service titles.

still wants all the ratchet and clank games and earler monster hunter games
to come to pc

PC gamers who wait for Ghost of Yotei and Marvel's Wolverine would be disappointed at this news.

It don't affect me because it is not priority to me due to notebook with outdated GPU because of not enough VRAM that is necessary to run the games without shuttering.

I do believe that Sony would end up port games to PC in 3-5 years when hype dies down, so it is based on Sony's discretion.

I really think they are just salty that the new xbox will be able to play steam games lmao
I haven't owned a playstation console in 5 years and I will never own an xbox console. The only console brand worth getting are Nintendo ones and thats barely worth it atm with the Switch 2. Xbox is giving everything away so they aren't worth even considering and Sony just sucks in general. They make shitty decisions and act like they hate having customers.
Maybe if Sony actually put more effort into their PC ports and ya know... Maybe released it a bit earlier than 4 years after the game has already released... Then maybe they would have made more sales on the PC. Also maybe if a majority of them were worth buying?.... Theres like 6 that are actually worth it

the poor optimization on most Sony's ports on pc says a lot of how much they care about pc and pc games, they're crippling performance on purpose, you have to have a top notch system to if you want to play in higher resolutions/ framerates, so this doesn't surprise me at all.

Yeah, I have issues with their PC ports.

Almost like Sony fans will eat up anything Sony serves to them without questioning porting/optimization issues until after the fact, only to immediately dismiss their own question and move straight to guilt tripping (or at least try to guild trip) themselves and others into believing the ports are actually good and that you're just a nasty, satanic Nintendo bootlicker if you believe otherwise.

If a Western AAA publisher like Sony knows that fans will buy their stuff anyway, why even bother trying to put any real effort into porting it? Especially after the increase in PS5 sales during the holiday season (despite console sales in general being down from previous years) around the same time the AI bubble caused PC RAM prices to skyrocket. Combine that with the Switch 2 having been a fast seller before its first year is even over, and Switch 1 closing in on PS2 sales numbers, Sony probably feels that the PC fanbase that always waits for sales and discounts is becoming a hinderance to their status as a big name in gaming.

That said, it's not like Sony's ditching the PC platform entirely. We'll still get whatever failed live-service game they decide to dump onto our plates while the fanboys tell us to consume it.

This is still a rumor and no truth to it, a random site rumored it a few days ago, and every outlet ran with the narrative.
Sony themselves, even announced a PC / Mac Wireless Dual Sense controller two days ago!

If they were done with PC, why would they announce that?

News isn't on any official Sony platform, stating they have ended or will be ending PC releases!

None! Sony has never officially said this, in any capacity! This is a rumor, continuously getting spread around, as if it's true!

Like that old song, doing it for the clicks!

Except it's not? I don't think that Bloomberg guy would risk his reputation spreading rumors if it wasn't concrete sources.

Prove me wrong then! Where did Sony report it! And that Bloomberg guy wasn't the first one to say, a person from YouTube posted it 2 days prior on X, and then everyone started repeating it.

This is not something Sony would admit to because it would give them a bad image. It is something you will have to witness in the upcoming days or years, if anything they release is no longer single players experiences but live services.

Dumbest shit I ever heard, this isn't something Sony would admit? WTF!

You're alienating a market, where you are strong at! But I'm not going to tell nobody!
If they don't admit it, that means they didn't say it! Please stop the nonsense!

And Bloomberg didn't get that info from Sony either, they dumbass website, says reliable sources!

Meaning it's a freaking rumor, they got it from that dumb ass YouTuber, and now won't recant the statement.

Take it easy buddy.

Tell me one good reason why they would disclose this information with you? The same way they have no obligation to disclose whether X game will ever come to PC.
The only way you're going to find out whether they pulled the plug is to wait them out.

Let's not be hasty, Ghost of Yotei should be coming to PC if that decision wasn't revoked. You have 3 years buddy so start counting. I'll have this bookmarked.

First off I'm not a buddy, and take what easy!

I'm perfectly fine, just don't like liars and condescending ones at that!

It's call business practices, when you have a fanbase, and are making changes to your business, especially ones that effect your supporters, you make it official.

Every other company does it, and they've done it about every move they've made so far!

And Sony is about Face, in Japan that means their reputation, for those that are too slow to understand that!

Sony has always been big on their transparency when it comes to PlayStation ecosystem, and if this was true, they would have announced it, themselves.

Not a b.s. from sources person.

Take it from someone who's their own CEO, I know what the heck I'm talking about.
I'm not losing millions of dollars and millions of clients, by making poor business decisions.

They made over 2.37 Billion Dollars in PC sales, 1.5 Billion on Steam alone.

Who in their right mind, would just randomly turn away from that.

And let some secret source make the announcement of ending that!
