A simple search in Wikipedia shows that Foxi4 is indeed correct.

To all the other people here debating/arguing, I seriously don't care if you don't see eye to eye, but please, be more fair in your arguments snd sources.

I've actually learned quite a bit by reading and fact checking here in the most recent threads, on both sides. It would be great if you were a bit more cordial. (Except against the characters here that a blatant lack of morals.)

As for the "special characters" here that are more violent, well, just keep being yourself. 🤣
The whole Ford situation is nuanced and complicated because he *was* a virulent antisemite and, ideologically speaking, he aligned with Hitler, even admired him to an extent during peace time. He even received an award from the Nazi government, but it was for his contribution to the evolution of the industrial manufacturing process rather than for his controversial views. There was also a German subsidiary company which manufactured war arsenal for the Nazi side, but at that point in history it was under Nazi government control and the Fords had no influence over what it manufactured and for whom. It’s very likely that without Edsel Ford in the picture Henry’s factories wouldn’t participate in the war effort at all, but however tumultuous their relationship was, they eventually did, and oh boy did they crank out a lot of gear. Henry himself didn’t want to have anything to do with the war, but the pressure was internal, not external. There’s actually a book about it - “Arsenal of Democracy”. Ford also published an apology for his antisemitic publications in 1927, although it was prompted by a lawsuit, so the sincerity is debatable. Naturally *none* of this has anything to do with the 40-hour work week, so I don’t really know why it was brought up at all other than to attack Ford’s image rather than address the point. He was a deeply contradictory figure.

Why? Because nazis will always utilize slave labor if given the means and the choice. Thankfully Ford didn't really have either.

Antisemite doesn’t automatically translate to nazi, let alone slaver. Ford was the quintessential American entrepreneur and pacifist which makes him almost completely incompatible with nazism. Not only did he cut the work day from 9 to 8 hours, he also *doubled worker salaries* at the same time to account for their lost hours and to be more competitive compared to his rivals, the exact opposite of slavery. The result was that the Ford Motor Company doubled its profits within two years. Most followed this example in short order. The 40-hour work week and 8-hour shift was ultimately the result of aggressive capitalism, not the efforts of worker advocates who attempted to achieve this result not for mere decades, but for well over a century.

Seems to me like Ford had *ample means and choice* and he chose to share the profits with his workers, long before Nazi Germany came along.

"Pacifist" my ass, he wrote favorably about concentration camps and savored violence vicariously. Again, thankfully the environment he grew up and worked in didn't present him with the means or opportunity to be more actively evil. Things obviously would've gone very differently had he moved to Germany and/or been handed a majority-Jewish workforce.

Extraordinary (and seemingly ahistorical) accusation - citation most definitely needed as I can find no reference to this “factoid”. The opposite is true - watching footage from concentration camps allegedly led to his fatal stroke. Even the circulation of his antisemitic book was explicitly halted due to legal action by Ford. We’ll have to agree to disagree, this thread is not about Henry Ford.

Another factoid it seems
A “factoid” recorded in “Ford: The Men and the Machines” by Robert Lacey, per one of Ford’s close associates. Apparently he was appalled by what his own antisemitism inspired other people to do and died soon afterwards.

It sounds like posthumous whitewashing sorry.

Hence the word “allegedly”. On the bright side there’s an actual source, as opposed to no source at all and zero results, at least on first blush. Anyone can correct me at any time, but I see no evidence of Ford being a fan of violence. Quite the opposite - he privately funded peace mission during WWI, though he was met with mockery from the press and was disappointed in the unsuccessful outcome. Anyone interested can Google Oscar 2, the name of the vessel, or just Ship of Peace.
