never heard of that sub, but that name does NOT bode well, does it?
The subreddit is dedicated to great lengths of preservation; whatever it is, they will buy hard drives or NAS boxes and archive various forms of media from the internet in the event that the material is no longer available. It could be YouTube videos from a content creator for what they enjoy the most, old software, and even on the topic of video games. The problem with hoarding is that it's a mental disorder characterized by an obsession with a particular subject or thing with little to no use case. While the subreddit name can be seen as a figure of speech, in the sense that it is a hyperbole, on one hand you find people who don't hoard but are entry level and more sane who want to back up their library, whereas others would take the name literally and would show off their entire collection of drives and hardware for upvotes with no goal in mind.

Hoarding can be seen as both positive and negative, but the majority of people see it as more harmful than good. But other than that, I think it is important to back up games that you own; even if looking at them seems like little to no issue, there are risks where the game cartridge or disc becomes damaged or if you decide on selling it. Just don't go too deep into the subject and only back up the games you enjoy; that also applies to movies, music, or photos that bring you memories.

wow, i was way wrong then, that sounds wonderful.
i was way off!
Preservation is always a good thing in my mind.

Has any thought about how April 1st is one day after Myrient shuts down.....
Hopefully this an Early April Fools Day prank/Joke.....

I know this highly unlikely/doubtful to be the case.....
I doubt it because it wasn't done in the middle of March where April Fools jokes are made before they are revealed the next month. So, they are being truthful in this case. It was announced on the Discord and by mainstream outlets, as well.

As I pointed out elsewhere, it was bound to happen. A centralised, small-time service for archiving this much data at this large of a scale was going to die off eventually.

Here's hoping places like BlueR:ninja:s catch up to the impressive coverage of Myrient. While P2P is volatile in its own ways, anyone can revive a torr:ph34r:t if the hash matches the original (though missing metadata could be a problem for magnets).

"Oh no, a website nobody even knew existed until now is shutting down, oh no... how terrible!!!"

Yes, so sad... Anyways... *stares at the Internet Archive*
oh, i was VERY aware of its existence.
... 6000usd monthly hosting costs dont come out of nowhere.
Trust me, people here, generally, were very well aware.
Very grateful, too.

I'm reading on one of the reddits that there is an active project right now to preserve everything. I think it's called Minerva
Just to raise attention, Minerva is located here:

https://minerva-archive.org/

There are no copyrighted materials on this site, so it is safe to share. I can't participate as I don't use Discord, but I'd encourage anyone with plenty of disk space to come in.

Why hasn't anyone ever mentioned it here then? This is the first I seen it mentioned, ever.

Nothing in this life is free. Unfortunately, entitled folk don't understand this. They see a link, they click it, and it's MAGIC!! The costs incurred behind the curtains are an afterthought.
🦜Plenty in life is free.🏴‍☠️ Unfortunately jaded incel gamerboys who have never experienced reciprical love don't understand this. What criminals who enable piracy do with their $6K per month is between them and local law enforecement, and I don't give them another thought nor do I so much as thank them. The come and they go. So what? And frankly, who doesn't have complete ROM sets these days? Hard drives are were cheap, and the vast majority of what was on MyRient was of interest to like 25 humans (laserdisc rips?). You didn't need 300 terabytes to "backup" (read as: steal) the important stuff.

Since 1994 when I bought a copy of FlightSim at the company store, I have bought exactly one game: MSFS 2020. The 60,000 or so games that I have? All thanks to Myrient and other such sites, all of which I access for free. It just doesn't feel like piracy if you have to pay for it, and giving money to piracy enablers rather than the people who made the games (like the kind-hearted souls in the executive wing of Nintendo's HQ) is just ethically wrong.
🤣

🏴‍☠️Embrace the flag!🏴‍☠️
And never pay for it since someone will always find a way to host it for you for FREE!

Because we don't allow links to piracy websites. That's rule, actually.

Thank all those mass downloaders created specifically to r@pe Myrient, and what's even more, many of them were charging $$$$$ for it.

Funk You!
You're welcome!

And it is HILARIOUS that a massive piracy website like Myrient is incessantly whining about fellow criminals taking advantage of their bandwidth. 🤣🤣

r/DataHoarders???

Since when is hoarding a good thing
Uh, Myrient has been hoarding for a long time. It's OBVIOUSLY a good thing for preservation (read as: piracy/theft). Without data hoarders like Myrient and Vimm's, massive piracy simply wouldn't be possible. Don't bite the hand that's feeding you (for free)!

@ChibiMofo yeah, my english is poor, i apologize.
never heard the word "hoarding" in a positive context before.
only heard it used as an insult for someone who, for example, buys prototypes or rare arcade cabs at auction and then doesnt dump. people on reddit use the word in that context a lot.
been speaking english since before first grade, still learning something new all the time.

But why, though?

Internet Archive is a clusterfuck of thousands of duplicate entries and (possibly) bad ROM dumps. Sometimes you find some good stuff, but it's not always easy, and you may not find what you're looking for. It doesn't help in IA's case with funding lawsuits only to fail miserably instead of funding their services.

I think one of myrient's strengths is the checksum verification of their files.

Is Myrient safe?
Yes. All content is verified before being added to Myrient by comparing the hash of every file against lists of hashes of known good copies to see if they match.

This shitty site doesn't even work, lol. Nothing of value lost.

Maybe because they're stuck with a large boost in traffic due to the announcement, you fucking idiot?

Edit: oh wait, i see the problem, it's because you're trying to use the search bar at the start of the folder, and not in one of the subfolders, so you can't even use the site right.

Sorry, I expected search to function like 99% of other websites do.

But even on the default page, it stays blank when hitting Enter.

Not well off myself but I'd love to give like the.... $4 I have in my account right now just to help them stay afloat. But I doubt it would help, now would it...?

I'm just one person. Though if anyone knows if theres a way to give them money can they throw it my way? Every little bit counts.
