The only thing that could actually reverse this/change this, is if governments realise how their laws make no sense.

No chance. They want you tied to your online accounts.

Here when they rolled out the OSA (online safety act), which was online age verification, rolled out under "think of the children", but has other nasty stuff like "making a false statement that causing non trivial harm" (I don't think that's the exact wording, but I can't look it up right now), where of course there is no definition for it, so it's just hammer to bonk wrong think with and adult content has vague categories, including illegal immigration (strange that, hot topic in the UK, can be age gated), so again it can be twisted to censor stuff. People complained directly to mps and quite a lot of fuss was made.

You know what happened? A cabinet minister, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology (so a high ranking position in government), came out on tv and said you are either for it, or on the side of Jimmy Savile (a child predator that the bbc and goverment covered for).

Also the minister who said that is friends with someone that was arrested for being a nonce.

You couldn't make it up.

I was going to submit this exact news, but someone already beat me to it. I still think this is outlandish, but I'll wait until I see on the app on what they personally mean by this. If this is something that impacts my experience for someone who doesn't even engage in 18+ content or anything like that, then I don't even know what to do at this point. There's no viable alternatives, and I'm not escaping to the Matrix, Signal, or any of that other BS. People are mentioning Skype like it's alive again but the whole ass company literally shut down not too long ago. Now it's Teams, and Teams aren't gaming oriented anymore. We're starting to succumb to a new internet life where everything has to be surveillance, and even as someone who uses the services that people like, it's still sickening to see that they just want MORE of our information. Don't they already had enough? I still have a feeling that it's all cause of AI and whatnot.
Discord does this because there's hardly any competition or backlash

There really isn't much of a fierce competition between Discord. There was Guided but that gotten discontinued after they killed it themselves, There's Revolt (or Stoat now on what it's called), but no one knows about it much and it seems to have use Claude in terms of some of the code, and the other alternatives don't seem to be really anything gaming focused and more generic, not having most of the features that makes Discord fun to use and whatnot.

It's already rolled out in the UK. if you don't use NSFW servers or care about anything flagged as NSFW, then it won't effect you.

The face check can be beaten anyway, I'm in the UK, my discord account is verified and marked as adult. I used face verfication, but it wasn't my face :rofl2:. I hear AI generated driving licences work as well.

Okay good, then this won't affect me at all, then! good.

i don't associate myself with those kinds of servers as I'm not interested in them.

Probably one of the only good ways of using generative ai lmao. using ai to combat ai

Discord announced on February 9 that they will implement an age verification system, which will require users to either scan their face, or scan a governmental ID.
Friendly reminder that back in october, a massive breach occured in discord where 70 000 users had their data leaked.

So where we moving to?

If you don't use Discord for NSFW, this probably won't affect much. You can still use Discord with a "teen" account. It isn't like Minecraft where you're unable to use chat at all unless you age verify.
FWIW, there's already a plugin to bypass the age gate.

If I was a parent of my own child, I would wait until they reached adulthood to use the internet, because it's not safe. Restrictions from social media companies do more harm than good; they're not babysitters, and there's going to be ways to circumvent them, no matter how effective they are.
And they would still use it in secret, and then you'd have no control over what kind of sites they visit.
Better to let them use it, but under supervision, so at least you'd have some control. Because you can't fully ban it and you can't watch them 24/7, that just doesn't work.

As soon as I heard about this, I instinctively made two middle fingers. Yes, because Discord deserves them.
Add more middle fingers to epstein files, Starmer from UK, Collective Shout, Democrats, MAGA and credit card companies that allowed this shit.

Competition exist: Simple Chat X, TeamSpeak and the old irc are you best friends right now.
