English fan translation for Tales of Phantasia X has been completed

What was once a menu-only English translation has now become a full and complete translation. Lifebottle, a fan group, has completed its work on translating Tales of Phantasia X into English. This is a remake of Tales of Phantasia, originally released on the Super Nintendo, that was made for the PlayStation Portable, and released as part of Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X. Tales of Phantasia X changes the original game's combat system, adds some quality of life features, and offers 60fps support for battles. The English patch is available at the source below.

The main patch features the following quality-of-life improvements over the base game:

  • Added a skit prompt on the world map
  • Added a new Red Lantern location in the Aifread quest
  • Restored Suzu's controls to what they were in ToP PSX
  • Restored the original ending credits song
  • Removed the Dark element from Suzu's Chizakura weapon
  • Made the stealth section of Alvanista Castle less jank
  • Added a toggle for turning Battle Subs on/off
  • Added a toggle for turning enhanced Holy Bottles on/off (enhanced bottles stop encounters fully for their duration, as in modern games)
  • Monster Book is now alphabetically sorted and starts at the first entry
  • The Sorcerer's Ring doesn't need to be equipped to be able to shoot fire
  • Curio's Mirror and Scout Orb now carry over in New Game+ if you select the option to carry over items
  • Restored Rhea Super Deformed sprite from ToP GBA

Don't let the official artwork fool you. Narikiri Dungeon X is NOT fully translated yet.
Nevertheless, so awesome! This is probably the best way to play Phantasia right now.
Dhaos be damned!

People who previously played the PlayStation version of the game as an EBOOT on their PSP can consider themselves happy.

Great work!

I'm intrigued, is this better than the PSOne version? My understanding is that the PlayStation version made significant upgrades to the Super Famicom original.

This is making me miss the PSP days. The PSP was well-supported, and it earned its spot as a strong competitor to the DS.

I wonder how many great jap. psvita and psp games never made it globally

Yes it's much better than the PSOne version for instance it features a much faster, updated battle system where spells do not pause the screen

It also has full voice acting for all story dialogue

And a number of QOL improvements.

Most people consider it the most polished, definitive version of the game.

Yeah, the PS2 came along at a great time because the money and engagement were both there, so a good majority of games made it over.

The PSP had a slightly different story because it released in 2004. I keep forgetting what a massive success the DS was, but I still feel that devs and publishers supported the PSP nicely.

From Persona 3 FES and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker to Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and (Parasite Eve) The 3rd Birthday. Valkyrie Profile, God of War, Final Fantasy Tactics, Kingdom Hearts, Valkyria Chronicles- I know that the DS was the DS, but in my opinion, the PSP was no slouch.

Aaah, thank you. Now, I know. There was a GBA port too, right? I'm guessing that one wasn't as robust as the PSP version.

Ok so it goes something like this

Original SNES/Famicom version is all in 2d huge amount of random battles. Boss battles that are too easy but overall still a good game

PS1 Version loads of FMV added. Reduced amount of random battles. Boss battles made harder. 3d world map. Improvements to the graphics and sound.

GBA version no FMV poorer sound compared to previous versions. Terrible official translation that makes huge amount of changes to the story. Rest of the game is similar to PS1 version.

PSP Full Sound version. Adds voice acting to all scenes minor changes to gameplay but pretty much the PS1 version

And then we have the second PSP version that is translated here.

PSP Tails of Phantasia X QOL improvements to gameplay improved graphics and sound. Plus the changes I meantioned in my previous post Overall the definitive version of the game.

What a great rundown, thank you. I've always thought about giving Tales of Phantasia a try. It is, after all, the first game in the series.

As much as I like to play the original versions of games, I think the PSOne or PSP version is really the way to go. Off topic, but wasn't Star Ocean on the Super Famicom also excessive with random battles?

Nice, I was looking forward for this translation. It's probably the best way to play Tales of Phantasia, with all PS1 improvements, plus widescreen and talked text... and the 60fps battle code is an amazing extra.

PS: If you have visual glitches in PPSSPP, install the latest nightly build of the emulator.
It's a known issue of the latest stable release of PPSSPP (1.19.3) that will surely be fixed in the next stable release.

Don't forget we also get a new character in ToP X.
AND this translation also includes some optional gameplay changes, like enhanced Holy Bottles, as mentioned in the OP post.

IMHO, still the best entry overall, except for the bad GBA version.

I've played the FVE (Full Voice Edition) of it fully in Japanese back then, with a dictionary XD.
Amazing game and experience.

Yes the random battles on the SNES version of Star Ocean were insane every 2 steps you make was a random battle.

I'm curious, what is missing from the translation?
An entire second game. The original Tales of Phantasia had a sequel/spin-off on the Game Boy Color. To my knowledge there's never been a complete translation of either version of Narikiri Dungeon.

After trying it for 10 minutes on my dear PSP3004, I deleted it. Why? Mainly because of the ridiculously tiny font. Can anyone read it without difficulty? The jpn voice acting is okay, but they should have added some visual novel-style sequences for that. All things considered, I prefer the SNES version. What a disappointment! 😒

It's rather easy to read it and isn't that small perhaps you need glasses . But hey if you don't want to play the best version of the game that is your choice.
