After almost 6 years in development, the official Price of Persia and Ubisoft social media accounts have announced the full cancellation of the remake of Sands of Time.

The remake of "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" was announced all the way back in September 2020, with the original release date scheduled for the start of 2021. However, that original date was pushed back in December, with the game then being moved to March 2021, only to be delayed indefinitely the month before the release. Ubisoft's financial reports during that year still showed a 2022-2023 plausible release date for the game.

News broke out again in 2022 regarding the remake, as Ubisoft Montreal took over the development of the game following a restructure, but still, delays happened, and nothing came out about the game until around 2024, where a tentative 2026 release date was announced yet again. Finally, 2025 came around, where the game was scheduled to release either by the end of 2025, or Q1 of 2026.

The new year arrived, and on January 21st, 2026, the official Prince of Persia and Ubisoft social media accounts announced a definitive stop in the development of the remake, officially cancelling the remake after years and years of internal delays and struggles.

This becomes yet another bump in the road for Ubisoft, after a long chain of bad reception and releases.

That was my thought too. It begs the question, "what other long-running projects could get cancelled?"

I heard that the latest Assassin's Creed didn't sell particularly well compared to other entries, so maybe this remake was the casualty. I feel like, if Assassin's Creed is faltering, Prince of Persia would have been a solid supporting product. After all, a well-received Sands of Time remake could lead to the other two games in the trilogy getting the same treatment. If Assassin's Creed returned after a short break with a solid sequel, it'd help stabilize the franchise a bit.

I was looking forward to seeing Sands of Time with modern visuals, though I was wondering what they'd alter. To me, Sands of Time was well-made as it was. Even though I hit The Baths glitch my first time through, I had fun and even replayed the game. The combat and sand powers only need a few tweaks in my opinion, but I'm not sure how big additions would affect the story and pacing.

Something has gone majorly wrong at western AAA studios. Games take too long and too much money to make. Some people also think they've gotten too agenda filled/political (I loosely agree about this for western games).

We need less american style ruthless executives (that don't even like games) in gaming like Devon Pritchard (nintendo), Sarah Bond (xbox), All of EA games, and more. Microsoft and its corporate bullshit is really core cancer that infected the gaming community, and then allowed black rock and other american executive,financiers, blood sucker types into the industry.

I've noticed a lot of people taking about 3ds games again (maybe due to the AYN Thor), I miss the inventiveness, various niches, and interesting games of that era alot. The 3ds was my favorite system, but I might be biased because I grew up with it. How do we get back to that ?

In short, Stop the gamer genocide, Kick out the non gamers from executive positions of gaming companies.

In all fairness, Ubisoft’s entire OpSec collapsed recently because their customer support staff sold Admin level access on the side, God knows how much data got leaked, third-parties gained full control over Siege servers and started giving money away like it was lootbox Christmas and, more likely than not, their entire work schedule got totalled as a result. I’m pretty sure they have bigger problems right now than remastering an old game that, let’s be real, isn’t going to make or break the company. They’re deep in the shit at this point and their logo on a game box is almost an incentive *not* to buy a product. There may come a time when the only reasonable course of action will be to tear the company apart and form several smaller entities that are exclusively oriented around making and maintaining Ubisoft products that still actually sell, chiefly Rainbow Six and, to a lesser extent, Assassin’s Creed, Ghost Recon and Far Cry. I imagine they have big cuts ahead of them, their financials are completely in the toilet already and now they’re dealing with “trouble at home”. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

If they were good, that's subjective rather than a fact. Ubisoft shouldn't make a new SC, Rayman, or PoP again as chances are they'll ruin it.
