'Dragon Quest VII Reimagined' gets new trailer and demo

In less than a month's time, Square Enix will launch Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, the remake of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. In anticipation of the release, the publisher aired two trailers: one for the opening movie and one showcasing the game's demo that is available today.

In DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined, set sail on the adventure of a lifetime as a bright-eyed young hero and his childhood friends, swept away from the peaceful island they call home. Sent back in time by fragments of an ancient tablet, they learn malevolent forces have sealed away entire lands. As they find more fragments and open new routes to the past, what began as a quest for answers becomes a fight for the fate of their world, bigger and more beautiful than they could have imagined.

The demo allows you to experience several hours of content from the beginning of the game, and rewards early players with an in-game “Day Off Dress” cosmetic for Maribel. Save data from the demo will be carried over to the full game when it launches.

DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined builds on the beloved original game to deliver a modern RPG for a new generation. Akira Toriyama’s classic character designs have been reimagined into a charming, hand-crafted 3D art style, complemented by diorama-inspired environments and dungeons. The story stays faithful to the original while offering a more streamlined experience and enhanced narrative depth through optional side quests, stories and minigames. The battle system is more thrilling and dynamic than ever, with dramatic changes including “Moonlighting” – the ability to use two vocations at once -- plus the adrenaline-fueled “Let Loose” ability and a new Monster Master vocation for summoning monsters.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launches on February 5 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store). The free demo is available on these platforms to try out.

I didn't realize this was a full 3D game. This game does look great, and my understanding is that Dragon Quest VII is an incredibly long game. So, assuming all the content is present and correct, you'd definitely get your money's worth from this remake.

I admit that I'm not the biggest fan of the chibi style (Not against, mind you. I'd have to discount greats like Final Fantasy VII and Super Mario RPG, if that were the case.), but seeing it in action with the gameplay looks great.

I'm glad it's going to be available for a whole host of platforms. I appreciate that it'll even be available for the original Switch.

Not a fan of the aesthetic but it's still an improvement over the HD-2D mess. Please do more Pixel Remaster-like remakes Square Enix !

A British dub? Are they going to eat baked beans, black pudding, and drink tea? 🤣

But I digress, anything related to Akira Toriyama is always worth checking out.

fuck yes been waiting for this one and finally a proper remaster. hopefully VIII is next
I do like the idea of DQVIII being more widely available. I may be wrong, but I think the game's only on PS2, 3DS, and Android.

I always give a glowing review of Dragon Quest VIII. Great gameplay, graphics, music, and presentation. It's an incredibly satisfying JRPG that keeps the pace moving.

For games that never have a single definitive version, the general rule of thumb is that the next re-release won't solve everything at once either, and each version of Dragon Quest VIII offers distinct differences. So, I'd be really impressed, if Square-Enix could assemble an actual definitive version of the game. No compromises, no missing content (like the orchestrated soundtrack), etc.

TL;DR: Even though Dragon Quest VIII sold over 5 million units worldwide, I still want more people to play it.

The demo runs and looks great on Switch 2, smooth 60fps. The UI is on the smaller size on handheld though, for my eyes anyway. I also appreciate all the options before starting the game. More gold, exp, do more damage etc.

As far as I know, this version won't be as crazy long as the PS1 version. As they trimmed off a bunch of fat to make the game more steam line.

I'm just glad they didn't turn it into an HD2D abomination.

They've streamlined the game in this version. My 3DS save clocked 90 hours.

Thanks, it sounds like the game's not going to be as long as even the 3DS version. Since I never played through the original PS1 version, I'm not sure how I feel. I guess it depends on what was changed, but either way, Reimagined still looks promising.

The PS1 version was significantly lower paced and main story alone was like 120-ish hours.

Strangely enough, HL2B doesn't have an entry for the original PS1 game. People say it's around 110 hours for the main story alone. No matter what, Dragon Quest VII is an infamously long JRPG.

Even though the remake looks nice, a part of me wonders if I should try the PS1 original. The N64/PS1/Saturn era was an amazing time for game development.
