Smash Brawl's mod Project M EX Remix's successor "REX" gets its first official release

Super Smash Bros. Brawl and mods has been an on-going topic of countless discussions, hacks, mods and assets sharing throughout the decades, ever since the original game came out for the Nintendo Wii back in 2008.

Since then, there has been several mods that aim to add a myriad new characters, stages, and other features, but one of the most prominent mods for Super Smash Bros. Brawl was none to other than the highly popular and controversial "Project M", which was without a doubt the most important mod for Brawl, adding characters, stages, movesets and features from other releases, like Smash Melee and Smash 64, with characters like Mewtwo making their debut on Brawl thanks to this mod. However, 10 years ago, Project M was shut down apparently due to their development team being disbanded, and that opened the gates for others to continue upon the project, with other mods like Project+ or Project+ EX taking the mantle and continuing what would be the spiritual successors to the original Project M.

Another popular mod in the same vein as those Project M successors, which aimed to go beyond what the original Project M was by adding even more characters and stages, be it from later Smash games or previous ones, like Smash 4 or Smash Ultimate, was Project M EX Remix, which included characters from Smash Ultimate, like King K. Rool, Dark Samus, Daisy, and others, as well as stages, and even added brand new characters within the same game's franchises, like Waluigi and Dr. Luigi, Tails and Knuckles from the Sonic games, Ninten from the Mother series, and much, much more, featuring around 100+ characters from different videogame franchises. Unfortunately, this project also met its demise a year ago, with the last release being 0.95DX on March 19th, 2023.

That didn't stop the original developers from continuing, as it's the case with most of these projects, and this week, the successor to the original Project M EX Remix has been released, with the new title being "REX", releasing in October 8th, 2025.

REX continues over the work that was previously laid out in EX Remix, adding even more characters, stages, music tracks, trophies, and more, to the experience. Some of the newly added characters are:
  • Master Chief
  • Shovel Knight
  • Sceptile
  • Incineroar
  • Primid from the Subspace Emissary
  • Kumatora
  • Squall
  • Rock from Fatal Fury
  • Sol from Guilty Gear
  • Dragon King, which was the original character from the pitch before Smash had Nintendo characters
Additionally, some of the Echo characters, like Dark Samus, also got a moveset overhaul to make them closer to their Ultimate moveset and behaviour.
All that comes alongside a wide variety of stages to select from, with over 100 stages to choose from, and not only that, but the vast majority of the available stages also have alternate forms, with some even having up to 5 different alternate stages, multiplying the grand total of stages to be above 200 as a minimum.

This release also added brand new custom trophies for the game, which can be viewed through the usual menus, and players can also listen to a huge selection of tracks and songs from all the different videogame franchises featured in the mod.

REX is compatible with both the Dolphin emulator, as well as real hardware, with the option of playing on a real Wii, be it through a real disc or through USB loading. As it's usual with projects like this, the user is required to provide their own copy/dump of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in order to play REX, or any other Project M-based mod.

I redownload it. The issue was I thought I was updating Rex but instead it was the fork of dolphin that updated and broke compatibility
