Jobs get unlocked when other jobs reach certain levels.. so perhaps just a 'job xp' code to go along with the 'unit xp' code would suffice? Job xp is raised whenever a character takes an action related to their job.. like 'throw stone' for squire if it helps with the locator.

Easiest is when you know the exact format. Guest wrong then guest again, repeat until found. PS: Don't be too sure about the actual target counting down.
