It could just as well mean he added honeypot in 814. I am sorry, but unless I actually see someone experiencing anything remotely resembling any of the threats duckbill had made, I refuse to take any of them seriously.

I feel like we really shouldnt judge him. I didnt want to write this, but I am quite certain he is suffering from mental illness of some kind, which is sad. Not something we should be mad about.

With that said, I have also supported Sphaira devlopment on patreon - just so that there are alternatives.

Just went quickly through the 4PersonalDataAssistant topic and the issue the guy with 810-en was having with ftp is actually recognized 810-ru bug caused by WAITALL ftp option, which can be turned off in config.

edit: I also find it quite amusing, actually. Like we are talking about homebrew software for god damn switch 1. Even if he somehow managed to cause the console to implode, so what?

Uhhhh I think we should 100% judge him and hold him accountable for his words/actions? Not mad, just that mental illness does not excuse shitty behavior or threatening community members at all.

So what? He should be held accountable for anything that happens to peoples consoles for something as silly as a translator patch. That's like Nintendo saying "WE HATE ANYONE THAT DOESN'T SPEAK JAPANESE", and then putting in brick code for a Japanese only game that once detects English fries the console.

Someone with severe mental issues should not be maintaining a homebrew app. Who knows if this dude is mentally unwell or not, but if he is then yea he shouldn't be maintaining anything with that much power on a console.

Mnemo who created the USB-GDROM ODE for the Dreamcast put a time bomb in his firmware versions a few years back and threatened to do the same with his 3DO firmware too. He also, caused a rift with Stone Age Gamer and they ceased doing business with him.

The thing is, there is no malicious code. Just some poor dude, who likes to tinker with homebrew and lacks access to proper mental care.

If he was born in western country, he would get meds and be fine. However it is probably not that easy in russia.

Why me, though? Is it about the flag in my profile? That is just side effect of my temporary transformation into duckbill in that other dbi thread.

Anyway, since I have perplexity subscription, this is an excerpt from what it had to say:

Well I never said US was any better. As an EU citizen I would certainly not want to live there.

However I have strong feeling that it is still an order of magnitude better in US than in russia.

edit: And sure enough. Now imagine how things must be in russia compared to what you define as shithole.

I don't like the current state of things any more than you do, but I have to disagree with this. This is not open source we are talking about, and we don't pay for a license, either. It's his work. He is under no obligation to share it, translate it, or cater to anyone's whims. His reasons are his own, but he has stated that he writes DBI for himself, and even asked people to not use it.

And yet, we actively choose to ignore that, take his work for free, for granted, against his wishes, all because it just works so very well. Then have the gall to keep pestering him for translations. How entitled can we be?

Even if he put petty countermeasures in his work, the choice to run it on our consoles or not was always on us. Why should he be held accountable for the consequences?

I can see most people doing this kind of comments completely ignore the background of non quoted words from DBI's dev, and prefer to propagate something someone said somewhere, instead of providing good sources.

And no, I'm not talking about the dev's "threats to Switch console owners", but about their background, and most importantly, the real context.

We should always have criticism I agree, but that should always come with lots of common sense.

In the end, no one force us to use DBI. There a other less prolific apps out there that people can use, most of them developed by complete strangers. And no, I'm not stating that they shouldn't be trusted, that's completely on each one of us, to do it or not.

Threatening to brick peoples consoles, putting "honeypots" in the code, and actually putting in shit to make it break the more you use it is INTENTIONALLY being an asshole. He is going out of his way to "protect" his work, and hiding hate for non Russian speakers behind that "protection". He stated countless times that the reason for doing this is hate. If he can hate, so can I.

He should not avoid consequences for threating members and doing things out of straight up hate. Its what I expect from people from the Russian hacking forum to act like. Children with a god complex.

Stuff like this is ridiculous. Its like TX putting the brick code in their products that HAS triggered on a false positive. Bricking peoples consoles and encrypting the nand. Adding shit like this is the WHOLE reason why people fight against it. False positives can happen and no code is 100% secure. So adding something to INTENTIONALLY risk someone elses console with or without patches or messing with the code is a terrible approach.

Edit: Oh also just to add onto this even more. Yea its his project. So if he doesn't want others to use it, why would he post it in places that are publicly available? He very well could have just kept his project 100% private without issues like this popping up? I don't exactly see that as an excuse. Why would he put shit in the code to avoid tampering and have brick code/honey pots put into the code that HE would be using himself? Why would he do that? What would the point be other than to put a trap there for others when he is UPLOADING builds? That alone voids the whole "he makes it for himself and tells people not to use it" excuse.
I'm glad this got patched. Hopefully the ticking time bombs can be removed (if there even is any). Hopefully they are empty threats from someone acting childish

Well no one is saying that having translated version is not a good thing. That's kind of the reason I published it, knowing very well he would prevent this method from working in future builds.

All I am saying is those threats being consequence of untreated mental issues and not duckbill being dick per se.

Also, we are not talking him threatening national security, but at worst god damned switch 1, probably on emunand, with modchip and backups. That thing is nearly unbrickable.
