Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking into how to translate Japanese 3DS games into another language, especially by modifying the romFS.

Some games seem to use files like Clothes_JP_Japanese_LZ.bin (and similar ones), but I’m not sure:

  • What tools are available to extract and repack these kinds of files?
  • How do you usually edit the text once it’s decompressed (if it really is compressed text)?
  • What’s the recommended workflow or set of tools for handling a full 3DS fan translation project?

I’m not interested in piracy, just the technical side of romhacking / fan translations.
Any advice, experience, or tutorials would be really appreciated!

It's different for every game, not every developer packs there files in the same way, they can all choose to store text in different ways.
(Of course, if a company releases GoodGame 1, then a few years later GoodGame 2, it's likely the file formats are the same / similar to each other)

Best case, the text will be in one of the files you find, in plain text.
Worst case, it will be encrypted in a format that you're not sure of (and not documented elsewhere), and you'll have to do a little reverse engineering to see how the file is parsed, and then write some code to handle the conversion process.
