Square Enix reports that despite declining sales, profits are up

The quarterly financial report for Square Enix has been published, giving us new information to pour over. The data shows that net sales for the company are down, by 8.9% year-on-year. Square's reasoning for the dip in overall sales is due to the Kingdom Hearts ports on Steam and the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in the prior quarter overshadowing the lineup from this most recent financial quarter.

Despite the decrease in sales, Square Enix still made more money overall, as a result of, "lower development cost amortization, advertising expenses, and content valuation losses compared with the same period of the previous year." Recent ports to the PC platform have also been a massive success for the company, leading to a more hopeful outlook towards its future releases, which include Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles, Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, and Octopath Traveler 0.

Here's a translation: "We're pumping out a bunch of remakes for nostalgia dollars because everything else we've made ended up bombing most of the time and Final Fantasy XI and XIV keep raking in enough cash through MTX for us to get by"

same reason as Sony with the second half of that.

"lower development cost amortization [...] and content valuation losses"
In non-weasel terms, "we didn't develop any new games, just re-released old stuff", and "we didn't treat estimated sales numbers as actual money in the bank"

And they thought putting their games on key cards would be a good idea.
recycled content with dialogue that is different from the original is a choice

nin allows 3rd party either 64gb card, or dummy card. No middle ground.

you do have a point. Nintendo needs to offer smaller cart sizes if they want third party games to sell to people other then casuals and fanboys
Which would probably happen down the line. Also heard that they took down the survey about that "game key cards" really quickly. Who knows if they got annoyed with the massive hate towards game key cards or they collected enough info.

I suppose asking people to buy the same game multiple times due to not providing upgrade paths is probably making them quite a lot....

About time I think. Their mindset of tossing cash at an idea, no matter how long it takes or public opinion of the final product, should've ended with Spirits Within.

I still need to get around to playing the rest of FF7 Remake and then Rebirth. The latter they offered a pretty good price on at launch for PC. The Tactics Remake also looks like it'll have a lot of TLC put into it, and if there's one FF game that needed it most, it's Tactics. So I'd say Square has shown some at least decent decision-making lately.

Hey the recent Final Fantasy games were received well. I think Squenix is stupid for trying to make them open world action RPGs, but hey at least we got Bravely Default out of that.
