hi!

spent the last few days pre-planning my Wii U modding journey and I think I only have one (or three) questions:

I am planning to play Gamecube, Wii and Wii U games on my Wii U. This is the external SSD I have found which fits my needs: https://shop.sandisk.com/products/ssd/portable-ssd/wd-elements-se-usb-3-0-ssd?sku=WDBAYN0010BBK-WESN

If I use the TeconmoonWiiVCInjector, all my games (NGC, Wii and Wii U) can be stored on the same external drive, correct?

If I use the TeconmoonWiiVCInjector, the games will be installed on the external drive, so once it has been installed, the corresponding .iso files can be deleted from the external drive, correct?

Will my Wii U format the external drive and I can switch it between my PC and the Wii U?

thank you!

Yup (and/or internal storage, ie what you can get in the official options) and yup (technically there's a rather intrusive mod to use a standard-formatted external drive as internal, IIRC)

can switch it between my PC and the Wii U?
Basically no, or rather: you can in fact access the proprietary WFS filesystem on a standard computer with the appropriate software (wfs-fuse and the like) and a dump of your console's keys, but like the equivalent for a PS3 hard drive it's largely of interest only for data recovery purposes

You feed the injector disc images and they get turned into "installable format" (*.app, *.h3, title, tmd, ...), then you install them (normally from SD) and yes, then you don't need the installation files anymore (but you'll need Nintendont on the SD for GC support)

if that's the case, then how do I get my .iso files on the external ssd? there must be something easy I am totally missing.
edit: oh, wait. do i need to put my .iso files on a sd card an install them to my external drive?

thank you so much for your answers, I really appreciate it!

The classic and least intrusive way is indeed that (note also that most homebrew, WiiU and Wii*, is generally best/only ran from SD)
This http://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-partition-use-partitioned-usb-hdds-with-the-wii-u.656209/ is not the "rather intrusive mod" I mentioned before (it still is intrusive) but you could use it if you really wanted to not use an SD, but as its developer says does not work in Vwii mode and I don't know if that incudes the enhanced vwii mode you'd be using, probably not...

* actually there's a big exception on the Wii side with standard MBR/FAT32 USB drives but let's not overcomplicate things, especially on a WiiU where other inconveniences come into play

ah, I've read about the USB Partition thing but put it off for being way too finicky for me.

ok.
I think I have everything covered.

>connect my external ssd to my wii u and let it format
>hack my wii u
>take my sd card (I've read about getting a sandisk extreme pro) and put necessary homebrew and my games on it
>install games from sd to ssd (repeat until all my games are on my wii u)

is NUSspli something that is still in use for downloading wii u games?

thank you!

Personally I find USB Partition much more convenient, you can put your Wii and GameCube games on a fat32 partition while keeping the other partition for Wii U games. You can then access the Wii/GC games with USB Loader GX, which offers lots of video customization, emunand and cheats support, among other things. The only downside being you can't play Wii games with a gamepad. If you use the version of USB Partition plugin that also has SD card emulation you can keep all your files on the SSD without needing to use an SD card at all, and it will even be detected by Retroarch.

I've also had issues with injected games, GameCube games work, but not Wii games for some reason.

I get what you're saying, but for now I think I will stick with what I described.

what does not work with your Wii games - the installation or booting them?

Booting, I tried a few different configurations and never got them to work. I couldn't figure out if it was the game that I used as a base, my hard drive or something else, so I just gave up and used USB Loader.
