I tried wired as well
same thing happens, and it logs me out of PSN after a few minutes

Might just delete the user with my main account and add it again

Would I lose anything, or it is safe as long as I backup my saves?

Hello, I was looking into getting a ps3 slim to install cfw on just to play "backups" on, and I had a few questions (I have installed cfw on my Wii and three 3ds systems, so I have a bit of experience in custom firmware):

If I want to install custom firmware I need serial numbers CECH-20xxA, CECH-20xxB, CECH-21xxA, or CECH-21xx, right? ( i don't want to take any chances with 25xxx models)

What does the "xx" stand for in the full serial number and does it matter?

Can I use an external HDD to store and run backups?

Is the latest firmware 4.92 and can I install cfw on it?

You'll be alright, installing CFW on PS3 is easy. I'd recommend a good text guide, rather than video though.

Yes IIRC - always installed big enough internal HDD for my needs though, so never went external. The speeds might not be up to internal speeds tho'

Yeppers, at the moment of answering. Usually the new CFW is available in some days/few weeks after the OFW is updated, depending on OFW changes. The thing with CFW is once on custom, do not update until the CFW is available and announced officially at psx-place. Also cheats etc. some multiplayer games even today can result on PSN permaban, so tread carefully.

Obv yes, if it's your main, the one you play with and have saves with. Back up your saves with Apollo Save Tool if you're gonna delete that account. Tho since we're not sure why this is happening, it's probably not worth it. What i suggest doing is making a new one and a new psn account etc just for testing, if it happens again, it's something else.
this behavior doesn't make sense since if you were banned you'd get a warning message and that's it, not like what you're experiencing..

If it's indeed something with the internet/wifi, you could also test using the YT app, just watch for a few minutes and see if the internet drops like on psn.

psx-place tends to have most up to date info (and active devs as members) so I'd search and look there at PS3 section.

Slight storage differences, also on 25xx some of the Blu-Ray drive bits were swapped from drive to the mobo so the drive is more easily changed (with earlier slims it needs factory mode pairing). Also the Blu-Ray is less an hassle to remove/reinstall on clock battery and paste changes. Reinstalling the drive on slim is a b**ch before 25xx as one cable is directly below the drive.

Yep, just open slot on console and swap in a new 2,5" drive. I've had success and I'm happy myself with SSD's but there might be problems with those.

Yes those xx numbers are to differentiate storage capacities between models, whether it's 160/250/320gb, tho this shouldn't matter now since you can swap that with any 2.5" hdd/ssd and a hd format and you're good to go

Literally like i described above. and it's better to do it now with a clean slate than when your internal hdd gets almost full and realize you want to upgrade, and it's a mess to do that then when you have accounts, saves, installed games to transfer/backup etc so it's better to just bite the bullet now go with atleast a tb (or more?) you'll thank yourself later.

Sry for the late reply, thanks for the guides, I think I'll go with the text guide as those are what I've followed on previous consoles (3ds, Wii).

I saw somewhere that the max storage is 1.75gb, but I think I'll go with a 1tb one, cause my dad has a lot of them laying around.

With noBD version of custom firmware, you can play backups etc. as usual. As for myself, I just use webman mod as that's the one I'm accustomed on. I use Managunz @work for disc surface tests and that seems to be alright as well. The backup tools don't take that much HDD space so I recommend just testing all of them and then selecting the one you like.

Checking discs for errors before resale. Far faster than testing the game playing it through the

Yes, although the software emulator cannot run all the games. Also, emulating PS2 in software causes a huge strain on PS3 needing quite high fan speed etc. in order to keep temperatures stable and the system undamaged. There are far better systems for emulating PS2 unless you get one of the backward compatible PS3 phats with full PS2 chipset.

I play basically only RPG's these days so my recommendations are quite limited to one genre. Demon's Souls, Dark Souls I and II, Persona 5, Tales of Symphonia & Vesperia (excellent fan translation on Japan only PS3 game), Trails of Cold Steel I and II (*very* text heavy RPG's) are games I liked on PS3 and remember on short notice.

Other folks can probably recommend games from less narrow viewpoint Also check the GBATemp Essentials thread!
