Sonic the Fighters gets first functional decompilation build

stf.png

A fan, by the fitting username of "biggestsonicfan" has made a decompilation project for the 1996 arcade game Sonic the Fighters. This project has taken the game's code and made it buildable using assembly. The creator notes that this decomp isn't open source, and that they have plans for an eventual port to c/c++, and a PC port, though they note that it will still take a lot of work to reach that point. If you're curious into taking a deeper look at how Sonic the Fighters runs, you can view the instructions for how to build it yourself at the project's GitHub page.

What this decompilation is:
This decompilation is an analysis of a game and all it's components. These components have been stripped down to human readable code to define the logic of the game in a way that can be rebuilt into it's original form.

What this decompilation is not:
This decompilation is not open source. Just like it's predecessor, stfdisasm, it is source available. This code is not licensed, and as such, all rights are reserved. GitHub's terms of service allow users to view and fork the repository within the GitHub site, and this allows for pull requests. The code may become licensed someday, but for now it will remain source available for research purposes.

You know the drill, everyone. Here's the wishlist:

1) Dreamcast port.
2) Add mods to the Dreamcast port.

Seriously, kudos to the dev, and good luck with the conversion and porting goals.

Wait, what I want to see is an expanded roster list. We need Sega Saturn Mario and Sega Saturn Kermit to face off against each other.

Watch this game's perception in the Sonic fanbase tank super hard like what happened to Sonic CD where it's perception came from the fact few people actually played it on Sega CD before the game came on PS3/360/PC in 2011

"LIVE AND LEEEEAAARRRRNNN!!!"

As far as 3D fighters go though, it might actually be better than Tekken 8 season 2.

I've never heard of this game but it has OG Amy and that makes me smile
It also has Honey The Cat as a secret character!

You know this was already on the Gamecube/PS2, right..?

As was Sonic CD in the same exact collection at that. The guy's stance falls apart with his own example lol.
And Sonic CD was the only game besides Vectorman that the critics of the time even liked back when that collection was made when the Sega CD and the original Windows 95 version were the only way to play it (outside of emulation, obviously), and released literal months before the Xbox 360 hit the scene and the PS3 had some hype for it before E3 2005 killed a lot of that hype.

And Sonic the Fighters was put on XBLA/PSN, only to get overshadowed by many of the major hitters of those platforms like Super Meat Boy or Dust: An Elysian Tail while Sonic CD's 2011 ports to almost everything was released days after Sonic Generations was released and people had hope the series was "going in the right direction" for what would be one of many more times in the future and giving people way more ways to play it.

I can vouch for the Sonic CD mystique. It's true, many people had a Genesis, but very few had a Sega CD in the 90's. I never knew anyone that actually had a Sega CD.

I remember how I'd see the Sonic CD case in a store (behind glass), and I'd stare at it wondering how epic a "next-gen Sonic" would be. Apparently, this grew into a hype of its own, until Sonic CD became available through ports and other means(tm).

After enough people had played it, the game's reputation plummeted. I have mixed feelings about it myself, but I don't consider it an awful game.

Not the most in the know on this, but since this isn't open source and only creates the arcade game

Is it even possible to port this?

I guess I'm not understanding the full implications of this being closed source
