Hey so I fix and flip broken hardware as a side hustle and I will admit I'm more of a hardware girl than a software girl. I recently bought an untested 2 console Wii lot on Ebay and while the first console was functional the second pulls up the "System files are corrupted" screen. On bootup it displays the health and safety screen and immediately goes to the corrupted screen. I have tried the hold + and - to try to get into maintenance mode thing but still goes to that screen, not sure if I'm doing it wrong or if the console is just that messed up.

To my knowledge I don't see any evidence of any modding (I know you can't assume but based on some of the shovelware it came with I don't suspect the kids who used this were really power users) but there's no bootmii, no priiloader, so to my knowledge this is a vanilla console.

I know I have heard of issues with the bluetooth module causing this as well but controllers paired with no issue so not sure if that's working or I'm overlooking a problem.

Any way of bringing this back to functional or is this a parts console?

The Wii Menu is starting (health&safety is part of it) so we can exclude:

- bluetooth and wifi (it would stop earlier)
- wiiconnect24 databases/dynamic banners (as maintenance mode doesn't help)

That leaves who knows what that's making the wii menu give up (I've seen people stating a banner brick results in this error, but it may or may not be the cause here)

If starting the console with reset pressed doesn't give you further options and of course you don't have a nand and keys backup, the next approach would be trying bluebomb, which would require a fair amount of trial and error as you don't know which wii menu is running (actually you could find it out with the savemiifrii, aka gamecube controller 4 with all arrow keys pressed)...

Try BlueBomb. It is your only way to get past the system files are corrupted screen like this without a rare, expensive modchip that we know of. Once there, follow the guide up until installing Priiloader. From there, we can further diagnose your issue.

Unfortunately you will need to guess the system menu version (it's most likely 4.3U, or 4.3E if you're in Europe), but you might be able to get that by entering recovery mode... Recovery mode requires a GameCube controller that you can press Left+Right+Up+Down on (not possible on an official, unmodified GameCube controller, but you can easily disassemble for that). You probably won't need recovery mode anyways.

If you need more help, feel free to friend me on discord, my username is "aep"

So per SaveMiiFrii's recovery mode it is running 4.3U, not a huge surprise. I've not used BlueBomb (or really linux in general if I'm being honest), does this change anything about the process or is that all normal? And the instructions do say power on the console but in a brick like this is that into vanilla menu and try to connect to the health and safety screen and not recovery mode again?

Potentially stupid question (Again I'm a hardware girl not a software girl, if it was the connection module probably would have had an easier time) but does being on the latest firmware change anything about attempting to restore the console's menu? Or if it's a nand restoration would it matter or just put any backup on here (This is a repair to sell, it was going to be formatted regardless so I'm not too worried about data on there)

No. 4.3U doesn't make a difference these days to be honest.

If bluetooth were faulty, the Wii wouldn't even boot properly, and you wouldn't be able to sync Wii remotes.

Again, it would be easier to discuss this on discord. Friend me there at "aep".

Bluebomb should be possibe having the Wii sit on H&S screen.

NEVER simply try to restore a backup from a different console. Different encryption keys means 100% guarenteed full brick.
A NAND image can be re-encrypted, but I don't see the point.

Once you have homebrew software loaded you can try repairing the damage (and somebody with more experience and knowledge than me will certainly be able to provide help).

Good to know, can't say I've ever used it so not super familiar with it, I'm old enough I modded my wii with Twilight Hack because that was just THE way back then, later ones I've flipped or my Wii U vWii I just used Bannerbomb. So can't say I was super familiar on how exactly it goes.

Oh I didn't think it was, I'm more saying I'm the kind of person who would have a harder time since it isn't a hardware thing

Very good to know, this is why I asked, pretty hardware smart but lol I'll admit I can be pretty software dumb, this is why I wanted to check here before doing anything.

It's not as much I thought it wouldn't be wide open to hacks more so my thought process was "Wait if it's on the latest firmware will that F with anything if I have to try to update it", but this is again the part I'll admit to being a bit software stupid and out of date with my info on the scene (I've had a lot of a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" for any homebrew) nor have I dealt with any bricks without having a nand backup (or ever really dealing with many bricks) so this is kind of a new one for me, but that is making this interesting to learn

Yeah. Your only available exploit here is BlueBomb as I stated.

4.3E is one version higher than 4.3U so it can very easily be installed over it :)
(but now that you know this fact, keep it very down in your list of attempts)
More importantly keep in mind that 4.3 only refers to the Wii Menu and that, at any time, only 1 title and 1 IOS is running, and they all can be installed or removed independently (each title depends on a specific IOS but that only matters when it's too late)

I would be trying to run the hackmii installer, (re)installing the HBC, and then backing out of the installer which should kick you into the HBC;

from there you could make a backup (for future data recovery/investigation, and also to find out about bad sectors), install Priiloader (to get easier HBC access), use AnyTitle Deleter Bushing Mod to remove all non-critical titles* (for banner bricks), ...

* strictly speaking that's only the Wii Menu and its IOS (80 for 4.3) though you probably want to keep the HBC and its IOS, also you don't need to take the almost-nuclear option straight away, you can always start with digital regular applications (00010001-*) and see if it helps

Why would she install 4.3E? No reason for that.

Also yeah I was thinking just delete all channels, even the Mii Channel and stuff, and get them back via an online system update

  1. One should not change the region of a WII there are far to many parts hanging together and it's hard to fix.
  2. Get the system back to it's original hardware region, install the system menu that fit's this region.
  3. Now you can get everything working and updated to whatever you like.
  4. Then you can patch region to what you like (though it doesn't add any real benefits.
  5. You can use the language settings in your backup-loader to fix language in most games without patching the region.
  6. You can patch region on the fly in your backup-loader.

She is looking to flip the console. The goal would be to return it to stock. Not play game backups.

I mean I'm not opposed to selling an improved console, my main problem would more being about "Ebay doesn't like if you bring attention to it". I doubt anyone buying a Wii in 2025 would be too upset if they saw HBC on there. But I also got the clue of "Don't put it on another region's firmware" more just a factoid it technically is "more recent" than U

OK after finding a bit of time to set up a couple of usb drives and the wii and having to google some stupid stuff about how to even use linux like opening the terminal successfully used bluebomb to launch the hackmii installer, got the homebrew channel installed, bootmii (only as an ios since it didn't give me the option to install it as boot2) installed and a nand backup (It said 4 blocks were bad when it was dumping but they turned green during the check so not sure what to read into this), and priiloader installed. Also somewhat confirming my suspicions this was a completely vanilla console (All I can assume is some kid powered it off during an update perhaps?)

And as a side note thanks to priiloader let me test dvd drive and controller function as well as get distracted and play a bit of Wii Sports and those passed so yay.

Anyway back to the issue at hand, like I said bit inexperienced with dealing with bricks in general much less without a nand backup beforehand (I will admit when I was younger I did a dumb when trying to install a custom theme but restored it with bootmii so that's my experience with wii bricks). As well as pretty under a rock for the past decade or so any recommendation for tools I need to look into for diagnosis and repair of this system menu brick?

It's not modded, it "PLAYS EVERYTHING" ;)
But sure, you can always remove Priiloader and the HBC (and any other custom channels if you were to install them for some reason) when you're done and - due to the 1 title and 1 IOS rule - it would be functionally unmodded for the non-modder :)

If they were all FACTORY BAD BLOCK MARKERs all is fine, if some weren't your NAND is corrupted for some reason (actual bad sector that developed later, plain corruption due to data retention or interrupted write, etc) and depending on what was there (if anything) may or may not be the root cause of the problem, that's statistically implausible though

they turned green during the check so not sure what to read into this
It only means the backup is accurate, it doesn't indicate the condition of the NAND....

I and FS47 unplugged Wiis during updates. It is surprisingly less dangerous than I thought. Not something I'd try though for anyone reading.

The best thing you can do from here is https://wii.hacks.guide/wii-factory-reset. If you don't have a GameCube controller, there is an alternative method you can contact me on discord for.

DO NOT LEAVE HBC ON THE CONSOLE IDEALLY!!!

The stock wipe should fix the issue in theory.

There are factory bad blocks, correct.

Ooh that's good one, going to have to remember that one.

Yep it was the "Factory Bad Block (####)" for all 4

...Lol remember that part where I said I'm good with hardware but when it comes to software...
