The Nintendo Switch 2 is still releasing on June 5th, but the price might be up in the air, at least for those in the United States. While the Direct earlier this week confirmed a price tag of $449.99, Nintendo has chosen to delay pre-orders for the console, specifically in the USA, due to the tariffs. In a statement issued to media outlets, Nintendo said, "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged."

The current situation would see a 24% tariff on Japanese goods imported to the United States, while products from Vietnam, where Nintendo manufactures some of its hardware, would be 46%. Pre-orders in other countries are currently unaffected.

Preorders been happening in UK since Wednesday. Sell out within 10-30 mins. Prices are £395 - 429 depending on SKU.
Tariffs on UK are 10% to USA so not to bad. Business still pissed off though...

Actually the breaking news now is that the Vietnamese have just come to the negotiating table and are saying they will now drop their tariffs on US goods to zero.

Stonks for Nike and other clothing manufacturers that depend on Vietnamese manufacturing are rebounding.

I wonder if this holds and the pressure is kept up on Nintendo for their pricing if the price could actually drop to $400 now.

You have to assume that they had already factored in some tariff assessment risks when they came up with the $450 price point.

I think the were assuming probably around 20%

So if the US reciprocates on Vietnam and drop tariffs to zero but the general 10% tariffs on all nations are still imposed it would be 10% less than they were expecting.
They could have even factored in 25% already when they came up with the $450 price for US.

Guess we will have to wait and see.

That's all that can be said about any of this. If the goal is to revitalize USA industrial capacity and decrease US dependence on foreign goods and raw materials as a matter of national security, boost skilled labor jobs and middle class prosperity, and create a more level trade balance with primary trading partners ... well those are all fine things but the turnaround on the basic economic trends to achieve that is literally years away, even if it works. In 5 years maybe we see some positive indicators. In 10 years maybe it becomes obvious that it's working as intended. But that's all speculation, i.e. it's a gamble, and the 4 year election cycle in the US does not leave room for patience from the electorate.

People who lived when there was a strong middle class in the US know that skilled blue collar "breadwinner" incomes are what makes that happen, and we let all those jobs migrate to foreign countries over the last 50 years for the sake of lower prices on the goods our newly unemployed neighbors were no longer making. It can be fixed, but not overnight, and not when most people only care about *right now*.
