Its been a age since I've dusted off my Switch and was curious is there a way to run games off of a external drive or do we need to use internal/sd card?

Short answer- No you can't play off a external hard drive.
Long answer- Yes if you have firmware 11.0 or lower, and SXOS installed. But with a lower firmware, means you cannot play newer games that require firmware above 11.0.

Bummer last thing I booted this I got off SXOS. Can you store and transfer games in the very least? or do you need to still plug into a pc to transfer stuff?

Ive heard others say you can install games from a external hd, using DBI, Awoo, Goldleaf, etc but I have never done it personally. I'd imagine you would just use the file explorer and search for your external USB drive, find nsp/xci file and select install. Good luck.
