PSA to ALL Android Users: Google quietly installs spyware on Android devices

Google has quietly installed an app on all Android devices called "Android System SafetyCore". It claims to be a "security" application, but whilst running in the background, it collects call logs, contacts, location, your microphone, and much more making this application "spyware" and a HUGE privacy concern.

It is strongly advised to uninstall this program if you can. To do this, navigate to 'Settings' > 'Apps', then delete the application.

Remove the following spyware:

A custom rom with no google apps at all. Not even playstore. Google is just too intrusive. They create profiles on all their users. Always watching and listening.

Can be easier said than done/YMMV, most custom ROMs I've used have caused problems one way or another e.g. run like ****, widevine, etc.

There are rumours though that Google may be forced to spin off Android, will be interesting to see where that goes for better or for worse.

On a side note, it seems only my mobiles so far have safetycore installed, my tablets only had key verifier.

Update:

Looking around, safety core is apparently meant to be about nudes, scams, etc. in text messages. That might be why it doesn't appear on my tablets, so might appear at some point as this sounds like an oversight and the 2GB thing should be disabled by default for adults:

That said, I'd be interested to see if this does all stay on device as they say as some of this might be legitimately useful (unless I've missed something).

I'm using a Moto G4 Plus (perfectly suitable for what I need to do with it), so I don't intend on upgrading anytime soon.

Didn't found them on the Apps list (enabled viewing system apps).

Should I still be concerned and/or interested on finding and removing them?

EDIT:

Looks like users with Android 9+ on their smart phones are the one's that should be concerned about this.

I'm using Android 8.1 on my Moto G4 Plus so I'm free to go...

Please be aware that if you're regularly using an Android 4.4 phone which does not have the latest updates, it can get compromised, especially if you use it for banking or beneficial purposes. Prior to Android 10, apps that use the READ_PHONE_STATE permission could access sensitive information about your phone, including serial numbers such as your SIM card's IMEI; whereas now, system apps could only do so when needed.

I think you're mixing up RCS with the messages app, the former is meant to be a cross platform protocol that they're trying to push Apple the adopt.

I removed the sim card years ago. I also rooted it years ago as well. Maybe I can find something to increase security, perhaps with root privileges .

This app was installed on my phone, it's always like that with Google apps.

I do like their Pixel phones, but the apps? Pass.

Yeah had it on mine, uninstalled it. I don't know if it was the cause of my phone getting slower but we'll see if without those 2 it works a little bit better

2 fucking gigs of RAM wasted on a "security application"? That's a lot of bloat shoved into RAM, just like default chromium, default Windows 11 install, and SystemD on most linux distrobutions.

Despite all legal smoke grenades usually present in every overwhelmingly large ToS, I doubt Google would get away with collecting very sensitive personal data here despite announcing to not do it. At least I hope there are few talented Google adversaries who reverse-engineer and test these apps. If they turn out to be obvious spyware after Google assured scanning was offline, this could cost them billions.

What is puzzling here is that SafetyCore comes with internet permission. Missing internet permission is not a guarantee for absolute security against sending something (interprocess communication abused to send data with another app having network permission). But it would have been a bit more trustworthy when coming without that permission at all. What does SafetyCore need network for when doing offline scans? Does it need new signatures like anti-malware? I don't know.

As for the 2GB of RAM: Why would these apps allocate that much memory? That would essentially break the software on weak devices. Maybe it means the device must at least have 2GB of RAM (See Google blog linked above: The 2GB are mentioned in a footnote together with the requirement of Android 9 including Go version, which was also used on phones with only 1GB of RAM in Android 9 era)

Spyware Or Not?​

I have no idea! In the end it doesn't matter. The function these new apps are supposed to have aren't very helpful in my opinion. How stupid would one have to be in order to send nude pictures to strangers? A smartphone doesn't have to warn me that it is a wise thing to think twice before doing this. And when nude pictures arrive without being asked for… well… I guess the user should be able to survive that without the phone blurring the image to protect them.
Automatic spam/scam detection suffers from false positives so the benefit is questionable.
→ Even if this is not spyware I find it useless and would recommend getting rid of this. A waste of computational resources.

Why just be afraid of new "Spyware"?​

With the already mentioned huge ToS Google grants itself pretty much all permissions. Just look it up. Actually read that document. It's a nightmare even without being a lawyer understanding all tricks.
From the technical perspective Google has full privileged access to pretty much anything on phones in stock condition. If you ware worried about SafetyCore and Android System Key Verifier, maybe you should reconsider using Google services at all.
Sadly I couldn't screenshot the permission list of Google Play Services. Even with a scrolling screenshot function this would be… well… see the text version in spoiler below

I have no idea when I'll have the money to do it, but I already decided next time I upgrade, I'm getting a degoogled phone. **VERY** sick of these companies.
