Skype officially shuts down on May 5

Before there was Discord, there was Skype. Popular in the mid to late 2000's, slowly fell into obscurity and has now been confirmed by Microsoft that the app will no longer be in service on May 5, 2025 and all focus will be on Microsoft Teams.

As of today, Microsoft will no longer accept any paid Skype features, credit, or subscriptions to new coming customers.

Surprised it made it this far, to be honest. Between Teams, Google Meet, Discord, etc, Skype just can't really compete.

I mean for the time it was great. But very quickly lots of competitors with significantly more features and QOL popped up. Skype refused to evolve to those modern standards.

I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. I don't remember the last time anyone as much as mentioned Skype. It was dead the moment Discord started targeting non gamers.

How are you supposed to online VoIP call any number now? Google Voice exists but it's region-locked and not available here.
