The constant changes, be it for bad or good, in the videogame industry continues, as this time, several studios under Warner Bros. will shut down, as well as Warner Bros. cancelling its previously announced Wonder Woman videogame.

Warner Bros. originally announced their Wonder Woman-focused videogame back in 2021, with the game now being officially cancelled. But that's not all, as Warner Bros. is seeking a restructure of their development studios and divisions, closing down three studios: Monolith Productions (the studio behind the now-cancelled Wonder Woman videogame), Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego.

According to a statement by Warner Bros., they are trying to structure their studios to focus on giving players the "best games possible with their key franchises", like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones and DC, claiming they want to remain focused on producing high quality games for their passionate fans.

WB also mentioned that their difficult and though decision to close down these three studios comes due to an strategic change in direction, and that their decision is "not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them".

I think UE5 is a big part of the problem. Still feels like it's in beta as far as performance goes, yet almost everybody is using it anyway. Meanwhile, some of the greatest games of this generation aren't trying to push fidelity above all else, but rather dial in their focus on aesthetic and gameplay.

Not that I'm encouraging shutting of studios but really? Monolith over Rocksteady? The former is still in good stead and has had far more consistent success, at least in recent years. Hell, middle eath was such a big boost for WB that they invested even more into its gaming portfolio. On the other hand, I believe suicide squad singlehandedly wiped out out most of the gains of the gaming division from the past few years. Yet Monolith gets canned? Where's the justice (pun intended) in it?


I believe the decision is more political than objective. To be specific, I believe it has to do with personal connections between some folks in rocksteady and WB management.
