...churning out like 20 handhelds a year? If you buy a handheld from them and in a few months 10 different new ones release, good luck getting any meaningful support for yours.

Why does the company that produce these not understand it? What do they gain from this "quantity over quality" approach? Especially when each handheld costs about twice the cost of a Steam Deck.

Sales.
They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't sell out every model they push out. Even though they cost twice as much as a Steam Deck.
PCs are great that way in that they are compatible by default, there's no "ecosystem" you have to cultivate, there's no critical mass of users you need to gather, you can manufacture one single unit if you want, and you'll probably be able to sell it.

Anbernic does this.

they get away with it by making every release a reskin of the same 2 devices though. They even crammed all the extra buttons on the RG34XX just to make sure custom firmware can just keep doing the same things. I'd be more concerned with QC issues. I have an RG35XXSP that boots to "my display signal clock is fucked" glichyness about 99 of 100 attempts and anbernic support kinda just ghosted me. It'd also be neat if they fixed their broken USB-PD implementation.

I sent my other Anbernic device to my mom (with MinUI) and she loves it. I got a full size handheld and a 3DS, that covers most bases.

My beef with Anbernic is they flood the market with these and they're essentially competing against themselves. I can't even keep track of their models because their naming is absolutely ass. And then there's the copycat AliExpress knockoffs that are usually no-brand clones, and that just poison's the barrel of apples even further. I'm sticking with FPGA devices, as I have plenty of stuff in my house that can emulate.

The naming scheme looks harder than it is.

RG = Retro Game
Number = Screen size in inches
XX = Allwinner H800 based system with common firmware, if this is missing it's likely Android
Extra Bit = Modifier, H for horizontal, SP for looking like a GBA SP, V for vertical, Cube for 1:1 ratio
