Can you use an xbox 360 controller on pc without adapter, is there some kind of driver you need to install, or is it impossible?

No.

Xbox 360 controllers uses RF for communication. You need the adapter. Trying to use a bluetooth or wifi adapter won't work because of how specific the protocol is.

Needs a receiver as it doesn't use a standard bluetooth.
You can disconnect the ring of light from a old 360 and splice a usb cable to it then use it on pc. or you could on Vista and XP.
Sync the controller first.
Or buy a wired controller
