I saw in a Mrmario2011 video that I can upgrade my Xbox 360 storage drive with retail am I able to upgrade my Xbox storage without modding it to 500gb and would I have to use badupdate to upgrade it to 1Tb?

I just upgraded my son's from 20 gb to 250 gb. I followed a video tutorial to swap out the drive.

Follow that video tutorial. And use FatXplorer to back up your partitions before swapping the drive.
(The drive has to be WD Western Digital. Check the compatibility with FatXplorer)

Here's a video tutorial by Mr. Mario in case you want to use am SSD and larger sizes too.
Be aware that if you do 1Tb you're going to be able to use only about 500gb.

Latest version of the FATXplorer and its paid tool SSD Maker can flash certain SSDs for retail Xbox 360 compatibility. There are some limitations, though: 1) 500GB max capacity, 2) SSD TRIM not supported (yet), 3) SSD Maker carries a low risk of bricking the SSD, but the chances are minimal and recovery is apparently possible. More info about that here.

tl;dr If you can find e.g. Lexar NS100 500GB for a decent price and you don't mind paying 3 USD for SSD Maker tool and the other limitations such as lack of SSD TRIM, this should be a pretty decent modern option.
