Ryujinx emulator taken down after devs reach agreement with Nintendo

In what could possibly be the worst way to start October for emulation enthusiasts, as of just a few minutes ago the Ryujinx repository appears to be down, with the usual "404" message being given when trying to enter any of their related GitHub pages. Not even the main Ryujinx developer account seems to be active.

Currently there hasn't been any official reports as to why this occurred. None of the official social media accounts for the emulator have given any response, nor has any of the developers talked about why the repository is down, but we'll be sure to keep you updated whenever any new developments towards this situation are known.

UPDATE #1: Given the nature of the page being down with a 404 message, it's possible that this could be related to the removal of the Ryujinx account, and not a DMCA. If the repository suffered from a DMCA claim, then the DMCA notice would appear when entering the repository. However, that is not the case, and the DMCA listings from GitHub doesn't have any recent entries for Ryujinx.

UPDATE #2: The Ryujinx Discord server has paused invites for the moment, and additionally, one of the Discord mods posted the following message:
"To clarify, it's not a DMCA, it's not an issue with GitHub. Please wait for further information and refrain from spreading misinfo thanks."

UPDATE #3: According to an official statement on Ryujinx's Discord server, developer gdkchan was contacted by Nintendo and they were offered an agreement to stop working on the emulator project, and while the agreement wasn't confirmed yet, the organization has been entirely removed.

UPDATE #4: According to other devs, the developer was not only contacted, but actually tracked down by Nintendo to his location, and pressured to developer to cease and abandon development altogether for the emulator.

This marks now the 2nd and only main remaining Switch emulator that Nintendo has taken down as of today, and without any proper and clear protection when it comes to emulation and preservation down the road, it's likely that Nintendo will continue on its efforts to bring down emulation as a whole.

There was so much in progress, IOS and Android versions, LDN integration, cross play between console and emulator... I hope those devs can compile that work and publish it somewhere.

Hmmm... Now that I think about it, Ryujinx is in a better spot than Yuzu in terms of legality. Unless I'm wrong, Nintendo didn't say that no one can fork Ryujinx (unless the main dev gave away the rights of Ryujinx to NIntendo), so it's possible someone will fork Ryujinx and not get themselves into DMCA takedowns (again, unless Nintendo has the rights to Ryujinx)

At least it seems like it was a mutual agreement between the two, and not a DMCA or any sort of aggressive takedown, so hopefully the main dev got some good benefits from Nintendo (maybe a position?), but otherwise fuck man. This basically means that there are no active Switch emulators, and considering the landscape, that might hold true for a while
'At least they are filthy sellouts and their hand wasn't forced', I don't see how it's a consolation at all, why is dogtendo like this 20+ years of emulation were so peaceful, those who emulate are not even their audience, console hackers should be their bigger priority

Look, no matter what you think of the situation, from what we know rn, this is a way better outcome than what Yuzu got. Also, do you know how bad the whole emulation scene was in the 90s? You had Sony trying to stop it by suing Bleem and VGS, and the whole UltraHLE controversy. Not to mention Nintendo is going after console hackers considering their infamous "system stability improvements" updates and their aggressive takedowns of anything covering the MIG Switch

It's disheartening to see the demise of this emulator. What does this mean for the future of Switch emulation? Could the community leaking Echoes of Wisdom before the release also be apart of this? While I don't condone such actions still, I value the longevity of emulators and seeing the loss of both major Switch emulators leaves a void of none that truly exists... Although the existing emulators can still be used, they will no longer receive official updates.

It would be beneficial if someone could continue its development, transforming it into something new, as I am not ready to forgo updates for an emulator I still utilize, despite my PC, which used it, recently been fried....

Welp guys...the only other good Switch emulator is also dead lmao
Where are all those people who said Ryujinx wouldn't be killed?

That kind of "mutual agreement" is kinda like a terrorist telling you to back off or you will explode too.
Don't think this is Nintendo being nice, this is effectively a C&D disguised as good manners.
But again, we don't know said terms. For all we know, Nintendo might've played "nice" (at least compared to what they usually do) and given him some nice benefits because they couldn't realistically have down a takedown because of where the dev was located (Brazil). Not to mention like I said if the main dev didn't sell the rights to the emulator, forks are possible which means someone will probably carry the mantle

And this right here is how you handle a takedown. They are calm about it and are willing to work it out. Is this surprising? Not in the slightest. The second you say you are trying to emulate a current gen system you are instantly the main target. The difference here is that Ryujinx was better managed and wasn't doing shady shit behind the scenes. This is the entire reason that they have tried to come to an agreement instead of a full court case. But yeah it couldn't be more obvious that Nintendo really only cares to target their current platform.

Of course we can hope somebody picks up development, but it may be years from now and who can guarantee they won't be legally bullied or bribed again

Wonder if this has something to do with the upcoming launch of the new system and software being so close to current games that it might not be too difficult to get switch 2 games running. 🤔
No that wouldn't be it. We basically have confirmation of the chip being used. This is more Nintendo saying hey we don't like this and we are willing to make a deal with you to avoid this escalating.

Development teams for these projects have come and gone all the time. The Yuzu Team had been around since Citra, so quite recently, and the RyujiNX Team also popped practically out of nothing. If this was indeed Nintendo doing this, then it won't be long before another team will start picking up development again sooner or later, and either pickup with the Yuzu or RyujiNX base, or start their own project.Things might seem grim with Shitendo not knowing where to draw the fucking line, but things aren't over and they never will be, new ones will rise out of the graves of the old ones.

Aside from that, NintenDMCA is only fostering more contempt and animosity towards them with time as they keep on trying to effectively threaten open source developers. Their business model works for the time being because they're on the top, but this won't be the case forever. Times ahead might be quiet for a while, but people won't lay down their arms and concede to a shitty corporation that doesn't care for anyone and anything except for their legal department and their wallet, so the time will come where lots of people will hack Shitendo consoles, their services, make emulators, pirate games and all that even more so just out of spite. A corporation cannot win against the world and the Internet, no matter how dark things might seem at the moment, keep that in mind.
