I know that amiibos are essentially the modern equivalent of the e-Reader, but essentially all that an amiibo chip stores is:
- Raw data, identifying the amiibo type (locked & read-only)
- Its user data - nickname & Mii (RW)
- Small gamedata files (RW). This feature however is incredibly rarely used, so far only recalling its use in the Link's Awakening remake to store dungeon layouts.
Whereas the e-Reader not only loaded additional game data, but it also could load games themselves (recall some of them using like 8 cards to load it, akin to floppy disks).
