Some Southern Democrats were racists sixty or more years ago. This is well known history. The point is that you are willing to equivocate all day long about Democrats, arguing a spurious connection between the racist historical subset and the modern Democrats as if it has any relevance to the present discussion, whist writing pages pointing out the tiniest nuances and technicalities to defend rightwing criminals. Its almost as if racism and criminality don't matter as long as you're "winning".
And I'm not a Democrat. However, if I lived in the US I could see voting for them, but only because they are the obvious lesser of two evils under an unjust FPTP electoral system and because I don't like fascists, racists, homo/transphobes, science deniers, etc....
I’ll tell you why it bothers me, and you can take this to heart or you can ignore it - I don’t care, but it will give you some valuable insight into my thought process. The truth is what it is - it’s not for liking or disliking. You can accept it and live in reality or you can reject it and live in a lie you constructed for yourself to prevent reality from hurting you. It is a big challenge, and a massive risk to one’s ego, to accept things the way they are. Case in point, this thread.
I made a very obvious joke. I said that I find it funny that a picture of Democrats picketing against race mixing was posted in a post that was supposed to be critical of conservatives, which in the U.S. context equates to Republicans, in effect. What was the first reaction? It was not to acknowledge that this is a bit of an egg-on-face moment, not to be humble and to say that it is true, but to immediately deflect. Those were not real Democrats, those were conservatives, Dixiecrats, Republicans, the gummy bears, anything but what hurts the most - the truth. There is humility in acknowledging past wrongs - rejecting them by saying it was somebody or something else serves no purpose but to distance yourself from reality.
People wonder why there’s political division in America, and a lot of it stems from a lack of accountability. We didn’t do it, it was the other guys. That’s not a mindset that allows for growth or progress, it only builds divisions and barriers between people. It’s always our team and the other guys. The *natural* reaction to seeing a bunch of racists in a photo is to say “oh wow, that’s a bunch of racists, that sucks”, not to try and find every reason under the sun to call them anything other than their real name, because to use that name without 100 qualifiers is to give your ego a punch in the gut. I don’t like racist Democrats. I don’t like racist Republicans. I don’t like racists in general, on account of them being racist. That is a common thing people generally share nowadays. You can use that to build unity, but you can’t have that if you don’t live in reality.
All of this is doubly troubling when you see policies that traditionally would’ve been considered racist being propagated as anti-racist. The Democrats have a racist history, and what’s their fix for it? Affirmative Action, a deliberately uneven playing field, by design. Racial quotas, sex quotas, quotas of quotas to ensure every office, every company and every school is just the right shade of beige to be palatable, regardless of how many otherwise qualifying hopefuls are hurt in the process, their only sin being having the wrong colour of skin or wrong genitals to tick a box. It’s not good enough to have things equal - they must necessarily be “equitable”. There can’t just be agreement that discrimination is wrong, we have to pretend that it’s a good thing. We’ve been levelling this playing field for quite some time and given the crime rates, lack of generational wealth and broken up families I’m not so convinced that it’s working. Maybe we don’t need to give people a leg up, maybe we just need to stop putting roadblocks in their way. What was the prize at the end of this road? More racial tension than ever. It bred discontent among neighbours, because people don’t like being treated differently based on nothing.
So you see, I am a little bit ticked when I see stuff like this. Not because I care what somebody else thinks, that I don’t care about. It’s annoying to me because it’s ignorant. Because in this rejection of what is true and the embrace of fabrication people are treading in the same footsteps as their forefathers, they’re just holding different signs.
Do you understand a little bit better now? Sorry for the rant, this post will probably consume this page the moment I click the button… but I’m gonna do it again.
