We just tried installing a hwfly chip onto my v1 switch. Upon switching it on the led immediately went red. We removed the solder and put the switch back to the default state but now when I power on I get a high pitched whine noise and the switch fails to start. Any ideas what could be wrong and if it is salvageable.

This is fine. I agree w/ @izy there are some sketchy blobs and I see some components missing altogether. I’ll go through and circle ⭕️ some of the points I think are sus.

@izy feel free to chime in here. This is going to take a village…

I’m looking through this thread:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/compone...stly-the-motherboard-and-main-console.525026/

Here’s a clean version of the area right below the chip.

I think this part is OK on your end.

Looks like a missing components in the red circle. Looking to see what value it might be.

Here’s a pic from the thread above showing your missing component actually in place so I’m pretty sure this is a problem.

I would also clean up the stuff in the oval on the left with some IPA and a toothbrush. Can’t see any direct issues but then again it’s kinda messy there and can’t see clearly. That top one might be bridged. It’s probably a good idea to use your multimeter to test for shorts all throughout this area.

Thanks, the pin on the cpu definitely looks suspiciously broken off.

I think the the parts where the work was done is just messy, there was a lot of thermal paste covering the pins which i washed of as best I could.

this looks sketchy and even if the cap was missing it woud still boot those caps are just noise filters mainly
easiest way to clean thermal past off the cpu is to wipe most of it off then just get a dry toothbrush and scrub it, will shine

and yeah clean this it looks bridged

Follow up: I took it to someone with correct tools. It was a capacitor, after cleaning it, it starts up but now get the following error code: 2134-0501
Can't seem to find any details about this error code.

I think this error code is related to defected M92T36 which is USB C power charging control IC of Switch.
Edit1: Seems this guy had problem like you https://gbatemp.net/threads/error-2134-0501.558526/
