Why I dont like steam

Honestly, I don't understand why people give it so much praise. I know they have awesome deals, but to me it's not worth it as I can't buy shit online.

Anyways, I bought a copy of Portal 2 from the store (disk). I installed it a couple days ago, and it was going great. So I decided to download TF2. OH NO! TF2 decided to not download at all. Instead it kept it at "Download starting" or whatever. So when I go to play Portal 2, it lags the game. Is there an option to cancel the download? I haven't found it, I only found Pause download.

So I uninstalled steam so I can get rid of that fucking TF2 bullshit. I reinstall steam, and all of a sudden I have to reinstall Portal 2? But I have the disc in. I never did understand it, why can't I play from the disc, if I own it. All of the fucking data is burned on to it, so why can't I play it? Instead, I have to pop it in, and have to wait over an hour now to play a game, all because it won't let me play from the disc.

And yes, I know people are most likely going to be like "lol steam is awesome, u mad" and some stupid bullshit like that. But aside from the deals, Steam is not worth it at all. Valve is, but not steam. I shouldn't have to have an internet connection to play a game that I bought on a disc. Instead, I get... oh joy, an hour and a half of wait time. THANKS STEAM FOR FUCKING UP!

It has.

[quote name='Aurionfox' post='3896957' date='Sep 20 2011, 07:29 PM']Team fortress 2 depends of some files:

!!!Before you delete anything you must close completely steam, don't use the x button because it's going to minimize to the taskbar, so close it from there or by the task manager!!!

X:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps
(X is you drive)

team fortress 2 client content.gcf
team fortress 2 content.gcf
team fortress 2 materials.gcf

also it uses some source files

!!!Only delete this if you haven't installed any source game (portal, portal 2, half life, etc...)!!!

sourceinit.gcf
source sounds.gcf
source models.gcf
source materials.gcf
source 2007 shared sounds.gcf
source 2007 shared models.gcf
source 2007 shared materials.gcf

and your personal saves/info/cache/etc on

X:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\Username eam fortress 2

Total: 11.6 GB (at least for me), so check the carpet size, if it's to big (considering that you haven't installed portal, portal 2, etc...) then you have some files remaining.

I have steam since 3 years ago and never had any problem (except downloads but thats normal), also keep in mind that each time you pause a download, steam is going to check every single file that has been downloaded to see where is going to resume the download (that's why you're getting lag, because steam is checking where the file stopped or how much has been downloaded) so leave it for a few minutes and it's going to continue downloading, that's normal don't get mad,

No, it didn't download. It literally hung onto "download starting" for like 15 minutes. And the only things I have in the steamapps folder is:

common - folder
sourcemods - folder
portal 2 client binaries.ncf
portal 2 common.ncf
portal 2 win content.ncf
sourceinit.gcf
spiral-file.ncf
winui.gcf

Which I assume is all from Portal 2 and spiral knigs seeing as how it's the only things installed since reinstalling Steam.

BTW, I'm reinstalling steam seeing as how it's never connecting for some reason. I copied the steamapps folder, is there anything else I need to copy?

No, you only need the steamapps folder, you can cut/copy to other place, delete steam, reinstall again and put the folder in their place, it's a quite strange error you have here, if it says "Download starting" almost every time that happens to me it's a problem with the servers because there're busy or under maintenaince, you can try deleting the "AppUpdateStats.blob" file, to search for updates or missing files, but only ir you're still getting the same message.

Try changing you download source on Settings, Download region, i have it on US-Dallas and everything is ok, by the way, did you download Spiral knights without any problem??, try downloading something free, like a video, demo, f2p game, or.... maybe this can help

if you have an nVidia card click this:

Code:
steam://hardwarepromo/609

or if your video card is Ati this:

Code:
steam://hardwarepromo/305

this are from a special promotion, it's a free Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, Lost coast tech demo, and a demo of portal 1, when you download one of this, you're going to download some files wich team fortress 2 needs.

Finally check your firewall, drivers, missing dll, directx, maybe the problem isn't steam at all

Everything here is a fault of you sorry to say.
Although you can't be blamed since you need
to learn how to use Steam somehow.

How is that a fault of mine if I click "install game" then the damn thing breaks on me.

Anyways, Portal 2 (after copying the steamapps folder) didn't work, but yet Spiral Knights did....

Portal 2 broke because you uninstalled Steam.
Steam is a bit dodgy yes and download starting
and not actually downloading does happen.

To delete games right click on them in the library
and click delete content.

What I was saying was if it was me I wouldn't have
had any trouble since I'm familiar with Steam.
But you had trouble since you didn't understand
Steam.

Own over 100 games on steam, been using it for 3 years.

Only thing I dislike about Steam is the fact that offline mode is kind of bugged. Otherwise great service.

But if you have bad internet it's not recommended.

I break line as a habit so people
won't have to read across the whole screen.

Anyway I just thought Steam would
have edited some base installation
files or something to make it compatible.

What I don't get is that ShadowSoldier already gave all the details he had, and people ignore them and tell him to do things he couldn't do, or already did.
Face it, things fuck up all the time. I've had a lot of experience with this kind of shit mainly due to the weak nature of my laptops. A lot of things integrate themselves into some other program, which is not a good thing in some cases.

On-Topic - Thats why I thought his problem first problem was uninstalling Steam
because I thought it was very likely that Portal 2 integrated itself into Steam
and uninstalling Steam broke Portal 2

Also I'm sure that the Portal 2 default install location would be in the steamapps folder, so uninstalling Steam would uninstall Portal 2.

Yeah I meant that but I'm silly and mixed it up D=

Edit: my post should make sense now.

What i dislike about steam is that i need to buy a game to be able to send friend requests, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

Your post is still making no sense.

When he uninstalled Steam, the whole Steam folder was gone so that means Portal 2 was gone.

If the steamapps folder was still there however, all he would have to do is install Steam again and log into Steam once to play Portal 2 again without installing anything more.

Steam automatically pauses downloads when you open a game. Ergo, steam is not the problem, it's your computer.

This guy is getting a lot of hate though for saying steam is bad.

how would it make it lag, whenever im downloading a game then start playing another one steam pauses the download untill you come off it, steam is brilliant and when the cloud thing is all totally global it will be even better, my pc is just under the recommended specs for dead island so to have all the processing done on another computer will be brill and it will make steam even more popular. streaming high end games whatever next.

To cancel the download you have to uninstall the game.
So I uninstalled steam so I can get rid of that fucking TF2 bullshit.
TF2 is awesome and you can just right click and click Delete Local Content.
