Trigger Warning (Hot Button Issue)

Back in August of this year I accepted that I'm actually Transgender. I've slowly been coming out to friends and family since then and so far everyone has been accepting thankfully. Even my boyfriend is okay with it. I identify as Gender Fluid, my pronouns are whatever he/she/they and I prefer the nick name I've always had anyways Chris, as its gender neutral anyways. I know that posting this on here is putting myself at risk for receiving a lot of flack, but after seeing other's do the same here I've decided that if other's can do it, than so can I. My LGBT therapist wants me to write/journal to help ease my Gender Dysphoria (just to clarify being transgender is NOT a mental illness), but the emotional distress experienced by someone who's body doesn't match how they feel inside CAN be severe enough to be considered a mental illness. I'm one of those people who actually suffer from Gender Dysphoria. I'm sure my therapist (for safety reasons) probably didn't mean for me to be writing about this publicly online but I feel its something I have to do to really get it off my chest.

For anybody who disagrees with the "transgender lifestyle" or however you want to address it, I'm all for an intellectual debate on the issue but if you're going to just troll or resort to profanity and straight up nasty bigotry then don't waste your time typing a response here. This is something I've been secretly struggling with for all 30 years of my life and I'm finally coming to terms with it and dealing with it. I don't need anybody's destructive criticism, I provide enough of that to myself, thanks.....

Look up the Brexit thread. You’ll find Costello telling people he won’t allow the thread to be locked.

I was making the point that gbatemp doesn't belong to you. You can share your advice for a better business model to them if you want. But I'm fairly certain they will tell you not to tell them how to do their jobs. What you don't understand is that a coming out post is not a political issue, mostly because it's none of anyone's business. Its not an invitation for people to tell them they don't have the right to be who they are or to share themselves with friends within the community.

I do chew people out from time to time. But if you go back and read those, it's typically those that deserve it, and I make damn sure I'm right first.

I get it, you don't like it. That's ok. But life isn't going to conform to your worldview. There are 7 billion (is that right?) people on this planet. Youre going to see all kinds. If you have no tolerance for them, that's an issue with you. I feel you missed out on an important stage of social development. Particularly navigating people you don't understand, respectfully.

I agree 100% with the bolded which is why I posted on this blog.Attention seeking behavior is disgusting whether it's on facebook, instagram,or twitter. It is even more disgusting on GBAtemp since it's a gaming forum. Think about it,why not just tell people you are a female if you want to be perceived as a female? No one on the internet sees you,but this people make it a POINT to point out they are transgender. Almost like they are asking for people to disagree so someone else can come "defend" them.Anyone on here could literally be treated as whatever gender they see themselves as with NO discrimination at all. All they have to do is put "female" on their GBAtemp profile and no one will question it. @ what point do you draw the line and realize that this thread happens every single week and the result is ALWAYS the same.

Anyways,I let myself get baited and I am going to bed. It just has become annoying to see the same blogs about the same things over and over again.Mods always end up either filtering 80% of the comments,or deleting the blog itself. What is the point of the whole cat and mouse game? GBAtemp has proven time and time again that they cannot handle a civil discussion on these types of issues without getting personal.I understand that this blog helps the OP express himself and feel better. Problem is that it is at the expense of the moderators and disturbs the general peace of the community.

If you are transgendered and you want to be treated as a woman, all you have to do is say you are a women and never mention the fact that you used to be a male. I personally guarantee that you won't ever face any discrimination due to being transgender. The internet is your safe haven to be who you want to be,why short yourself in order to garner some temporary fake sympathy? Better to just say you are a woman and get treated as such no?

That first paragraph, I have made that exact arguement in a couple other blogs. Particularly when i thought someone was pretending to be trans for attention. You should have just put this post first. Makes a great point and doesn't sound asshole-ish.

You know, Maluma, you can always leave the site if you don't like it guaranteeing free speech. Just make sure the door doesn't hit you on the way out.

@ghostLatte problem is that it isn't free speech. You are only allowed to voice your opinion if it goes with the status quo. I like your attempt at garnering likes on here though. Im off to bed and probably wont ever participate in these discussions again.

Damn this thread is on fire.
I got a lot of reading to do just to see what the hell people are saying about this topic.

@WeedZ "I mean, yeah. If they're fine, then they're fine. But still, this doesn't necessarily mean it's not a disorder. Like I said before, people with, say anxiety disorder, can be fine for years but still have a disorder. Just because it isn't a constant state doesn't mean it never negatively impacts. We don't change between "anxiety" and "anxiety disorder" on an invidual basis. It's just a disorder."

For something to be classifies as a disorder it has to be persistent. If not then every single human on this planet will be classified as having a disorder. We all feel anxiety at times, we all get extremely sad, some days we don't want to leave the bed, even if it affects us negatively for a short time, and so on. This is natural for humans to feel these things as nature gave it to us to protect us for evolutionary reasons. So sometimes feeling these things are not disorders. Its when something is persistent, constantly happening a lot and affecting a persons life really really negatively is when its classified as a disorder.

"The trying to reinterpret words is what gets to me. Thats why i got annoyed. Not because society shouldn't be tolerant, but it's not everyone else's responsibility to change their lives to spare someone's feelings. And that's what's happening. The only reason people don't want to use "disorder" is because it has a negative stigma. But it doesn't have to. The term is not automatically negative."

If you read my above post its why Transgender itself is not a disorder and no one is redefining anything to spare someones feelings. If they function normal and are not in deep depression then their is not a disorder. Evolution and genetic variation exists in nature. There is life out there that only has one gender and reproduces asexually. Many things are possible in nature. People say that its not normal but a lot in nature is not normal to humans.

If someone was born with the ability to see Ultra Violet radiation from evolution they would not be considered normal yet no one will attack them for it, and even be amazed by them. The ability to speak and to articulate sounds the way humans do at one time in the past was not normal until it became common and normal. In nature many times variation happens that neither has benefit nor negative effect on a species yet the species still coexist and lives just fine.

"Also, people want to portray the hardships of being transgendered as a fault of society. But it's not. Even if every human being on the planet were accepting and kind, the internal conflict still exists. It's not society's fault a person has gender dysphoria."

If they were depressed because they were bullied by society for being transgender, and their depression was not from being trans itself, then its society thats causing their hardships. So we have to make the distinction on where their depression originates from, and whether its the self or other.

Ben Shapiro did use the argument that supposedly society bullies, mistreats and discriminates blacks a lot yet suicide rates for blacks are a lot lower than for trans. Also in 3rd world countries suicide rates are lower than 1st world and suicide is a privilege of the upper class. He's using it as the reason why trans are not killing themselves for being bullied. So suicide for trans comes from the self. I would have to do more research on this topic to see if there is any others things thats not taken into account to see if its true. We would have to do controlled studies to get more accurate answer.

I’d like to pitch in maluma.

You keep saying that this isnt free speech, because lots of people are giving you hate. I hate to burst your bubble, friendo, but if people weren’t allowed to voice their dislike of your opinions, it wouldn’t be free speech. You don’t want free speech, you want a safe space where you can say what you want without getting any flak for it.

I for one find your whole argument very hypocritical. If you intend to continue arguing on this thread, I suggest you come up with a new strategy. If not, I think most of us would appreciate it if you leave. (And no, I am not violating your right to free speech by telling you to stop/go away, because I can’t make you do anything.)

@SG854 I think I'm just having a hard time articulating my point and it's coming across in a way I'm not intending. There's an underlying issue here. I'm sure they changed the criteria for gender dysphoria as a disorder. But before that people claimed transgender wasn't the same as gender dysphoria. The goal being to separate from 'disorder'.

But why? Why dont people with clinical depression, anxiety issues, epilepsy, schizophrenia, etc do the same? And honestly, gender dysphoria is more relatable to these conditions due to its permanence and severity than say, typical nervousness or days of sadness. Why does gender dysphoria get a pass where other conditions dont?

That's my concern. The white knight community that jumps on issues of race, gender, sexuality, etc have loudly proclaimed that the average joe minding his own business is a bigot if he/she doesn't accommodate the potential hurt feelings of minority groups.

If gender dysphoria is not a disorder, then it is a normal condition. If it's a normal condition then the accompanying conditions common to this non-disorder are no longer a fault of the non-disorder itself. ie, depression, anxiety, suicidal tendencies, poor body image, etc.

So what/who is at fault for these other related conditions if not the gender dysphoria? As @TotalInsanity4 said to me a couple pages back "where does their depression come from" (implying society).

That's where logic leads. But it's not "societ's" fault that they were born with a condition that was outside the norm and has a tendency to cause hardship, and it's not any individuals responsibility to accommodate that hardship.

The mentality then automatically becomes that those with gender dysphoria are victims of a great injustice from the society they live in, when actually they are victims of an unfortunate condition. The difference is innocent people that don't care one way or another are now monsters and bigots for not changing their entire world views so the disorder is not a disorder.

Ugh, I hope I got it out this time..

Gender Dysphoria has multiple causes. One is simply a mismatch between one's gender identity and his/her body. The other is often the result of suppressing one's true self, because of fear of how society will react to it. Mine is caused primarily by the latter. Its not entirely society's fault though, as I could've expressed my true self much sooner, before things escalated to this point, but I was generally terrified to do so until now. Its both my fault as well as stigma's in society. It is NOT however all of society's fault, not everyone is intolerant and non-accepting. These are the cards I've been dealt for a number of different reasons (partially my fault too), but it is what it is. The point is I'm now seeking treatment and doing what I have to do to get better....

For those arguing that the subject at hand is inappropriate being on GBATemp, just remember, you CHOSE to read a personal blog. Personal blogs are open for people to discuss whatever they want, whether its related to gaming or not. If I opened a thread on the subject in one of the gaming or hacking threads, I would 100% agree with you, that its inappropriate and off topic, but that isn't the case.
