I now have respect for the Gameboy

Since I was born in 1993, I grew up on the Sega Genesis, NES, SNES, and the consoles that were popular (And affordable) during that era. One system I was never a huge fan of was the Gameboy/Gameboy Color line. I had a Gameboy Color and liked a few of the games for it, but I was always left with the impression I wasn't playing the right games. Recently I found Lameboy for the DS so I decided to emulate a few Gameboy titles.

And man is it awesome.

For one, Super Mario Bros Deluxe is probably the best version of the original Super Mario Brothers I've played. Not only do the physics feels better than the original, but the extra features really lend to the game, and you can play as Luigi.

Another awesome game was The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. I've heard a bit about this since the release of the 3DS version, so I thought I would give it a spin and see what the fuss was about. I'm not that far yet, but I like it a lot so far. I'm at the part where you have to enter the swamp dungeon with the Chain-Chomp thing, and I plan on getting to that today. Great fun.

And for the hell of it, I started a file on Pokemon Blue. Even though it looks dated, the gameplay is still as fresh and fun as ever. The simplicity of it over the new Pokemon games is what I think I like the most about it.

In addition to these, I've also played Disney Tetris, Metal Gear solid, Mario Tennis, Kirby's Dreamland 2, and more. I feel like I discovered a bunch of lost games I had never played before and love it.

Well, I didn't think it sucked, I just wasn't very fond of it. I like it now that I've played a few games though.

It's easier to respect the Game Boy now because you can actually see it!

I remember buying about 5 different light contraptions just to be able to play super mario land, good times. ^_^

Was the lighting really that bad?
I had one and I don't remember it being as bad as you guys are saying

It was horrible, playing games was completely dependent on how much light there was around you. It also meant you couldn't lie in bed and play some Mario before going to bed. Unless you got one of those light magnifiers thingamigjig which I found to be a pain. Seriously the backlight is the greatest innovation in handheld gaming, the touchscreen just can't compare.

Now that you've got a new-found respect for the Gameboy, I highly recommend playing these games:

- Metroid II
- Pokemon Trading Card Game (still my number 1 game to this day)
- Cool Ball/Pop Up - insanely addictive
- Super Pika Land - a hack of Super Mario Land but I like the blue background and the nostalgia that surrounds this hack
- Wario Land 3
- Bubble Ghost
- Megaman Xtreme 1 and 2

:)

Never had any problems with my GB [the black-and-white brick ♥], my GBC [it was a pikachu edition ♥], or my GBA [it was a special pokemon edition. gold, too ♥] when it came to seeing what was happening on the screen. Never hand an SP either, so my first handheld with backlighting is my DSi...

Perhaps my eyes are too sharp. Or a radioactive owl might have bitten me when I was young...

Well, anyway, congrats on finally [re]discovering the gameboy. Enjoy the games.

EDIT: Perhaps we get too much sunlight here in near the equator? It's always bright enough here.

i used to go out to the recycling center every couple weeks and look at the crts and other electronics people would drop off. Usually screens were broken or severely scratched from being tossed around. Did find a good one here and there, but never anything like a 1080i widescreen crt.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.

Free release can have loopholes where they still make money through ads
