Why I dont like steam

Honestly, I don't understand why people give it so much praise. I know they have awesome deals, but to me it's not worth it as I can't buy shit online.

Anyways, I bought a copy of Portal 2 from the store (disk). I installed it a couple days ago, and it was going great. So I decided to download TF2. OH NO! TF2 decided to not download at all. Instead it kept it at "Download starting" or whatever. So when I go to play Portal 2, it lags the game. Is there an option to cancel the download? I haven't found it, I only found Pause download.

So I uninstalled steam so I can get rid of that fucking TF2 bullshit. I reinstall steam, and all of a sudden I have to reinstall Portal 2? But I have the disc in. I never did understand it, why can't I play from the disc, if I own it. All of the fucking data is burned on to it, so why can't I play it? Instead, I have to pop it in, and have to wait over an hour now to play a game, all because it won't let me play from the disc.

And yes, I know people are most likely going to be like "lol steam is awesome, u mad" and some stupid bullshit like that. But aside from the deals, Steam is not worth it at all. Valve is, but not steam. I shouldn't have to have an internet connection to play a game that I bought on a disc. Instead, I get... oh joy, an hour and a half of wait time. THANKS STEAM FOR FUCKING UP!

You know, you could of just right clicked on TF2 and press uninstall, you didn't need to reinstall Steam...[quote name='ShadowSoldier' post='3896058' date='Sep 20 2011, 06:05 PM']I reinstall steam, and all of a sudden I have to reinstall Portal 2? It's not just Steam, nearly every single PC game requires you to install first.

At least you might be able to play without the disc afterwards.

Also edit: You only need an internet connection the first time you open up Steam and activate Portal, afterwards you can just go in offline mode. DRM, learn it, get used to it.

How would a download lag your Portal 2? That sounds like a terrible computer problem more then Steam.

If the download wasn't working, try restarting steam instead of all out re installing it. I've never had a problem on Steam that a quick restart didn't fix.

Games play faster if the data is directly on your hard drive.
Having to read the disk slows shit down, so that's probably why it has a mandatory install. It wants the game to be smooth. Lots of games do this, even console games are starting to insist, or force an install so the game plays properly.

Steam is pretty much for digital downloaders. Though, Steam chat injected into most any game is pretty awesome. Makes talking to people in a full screen game (without a second monitor) much easier. It's also nice to keep my games in a nice little list.

Btw Steam has an offline mode. You don't need to be online. Unless Portal 2 is special. I've never once been denied one of my games in offline mode.

Uh. Simply press uninstall. It should be there even if they download is paused/unfinished. They simply use steam to make piracy harder.(like it matters :glare: and most likely something more like how much of the products you like from value etc)

Steam also offers YOU a way to keep all ur games in one single launcher. You can manually add game shortcuts so you dont have to fill your desktop with games which can cause some hefty slowdowns on the computer. Apart from game management and cheap offers and the way of getting games without having to go out the door. Then yeah, steam would never be worth it. But hey! You get ur offers. Suck it up and move on :)

I couldn't uninstall TF2 because it never finished installing. It never gave me the option to.

But what I'm saying is, I shouldn't have to have an internet connection to play the game, if I own it on the disc. Let me install from the disc, instead of having me wait over an hour to download the installs. And even though I put the disc in, and clicked install, it still goes to steam, so what's the point. I get wanting to fight piracy, but... come on, there has to be a more convenient way.

How would a download lag your Portal 2?
You tell me. The thing ran perfectly fine even when I was installing some of the other free games on there.

If the download wasn't working, try restarting steam instead of all out re installing it. I've never had a problem on Steam that a quick restart didn't fix.

I did retry. I exited out and went back in, still "Download starting". I restarted the computer, went back "Download starting".

Hmm, either ur computer is to newb to understand that command, or u simply failed at clicking it. There also exist another way to delete it. Find the local content yourself and manually delete it while steam is turned off. Now if u still find issues from now on uninstalling, then you either are failing miserably at uninstalling or steam just hate you plainly. And pausing the download just simply fix the lag. Why bother trying to delete it lol. Play Portal 2 til you puke, then resume download on TF2 while waiting for it to finish. Want to play again? Pause and continue.

only think i hate is my legit purchased copy of portal runs through steam lags atrociously. while an illegit runs perfect(though it's probably that i need more ram to run steam AND portal) also SS you get the free portal 1 todays the last day

I hit pause download, but it didn't do anything. And when I clicked play on Portal 2 (before I uninstalled it), it said there was too much shit or something and it asked if I wanted to defragment. I hit yes, that didn't do anything.

  • Log in to Steam and click on Library.
  • Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
  • Insert the first disc into your computer.
  • Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
  • Press Windows Key + R to open Run
  • In the Run window type: "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:
  • Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct. Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
  • Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc

Nearly EVERY game now requires you to connect to the internet to verify it. If you mean installing from the disc, there's an option for that, can't remember because I never use it but I've heard it can be done.

So you uninstalled it for one game?

That was pointless. And the TF2 download couldn't have been lagging the game. First of all, that isn't possible and second the download pauses when you launch a game. All of your points are needless whining.

Sounds like Steam's having a major fuck-up on your TF2 purchase. Steam keeps pinging the server trying to download but can't. At the same time I don't think mnaully deleting any files is going to work either. There aren't any to delete (or if there are its just placeholders) Steam's still gonna try and download the game when it restarts. Its worth trying removing the placeholders though as possibly something messed up in booking out space on your HDD.
When you uninstalled Steam you probably told it to uninstall all the games, this included Portal 2. Stick the disk back in and reinstall results in a job done.

Worked for me before. When Steam tried to download CoD automatically on one of those free weekends, I paused the download and deleted the content. Made it completely disappear :yay:

Dude I had no choice lol, what part of that do you not understand? It didn't let me delete it at all. It only got deleted when I uninstalled Steam. It wouldn't delete when I clicked it, it fucked it up.

So you're telling me, I install Portal 2, it works perfectly fine, loads fast, no hiccups or lag at all. Then the one day I decide to download TF2, Portal 2 suddenly starts lagging, and it's not TF2? You do see how I find that ridiculously hard to believe, right?

And before you ask, or assume, no, I had nothing else running on the computer. I turned it on, went to the steam store, clicked "install TF2", played Portal 2, bam, that's when the problems occurred.

Sounds like Steam's having a major fuck-up on your TF2 purchase. Steam keeps pinging the server trying to download but can't. I'm trying to reinstall it. I put the disc in, and it keeps pausing. It keeps saying it can't be completed at this time and crap like that. I'm actually getting pissed off at this, mainly because I was nearing the end of the single player in Portal 2. But .. oh wait, there we go, it just paused as I was typing this saying that the process cannot be completed, try again later.

We possibly need to get rid of that TF2 issue before Steam can install anything else. Pause the download then see if you can find and delete C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\[username] eam fortress2 and delete that folder. Then in the steamapps folder delete "team fortress 2 client content.gcf", "team fortress 2 content.gcf" and "team fortress 2 materials.gcf"
Then restart Steam and see if TF2 tries to start downloading. If it does then the issue is in a file somewhere in Steam that didn't get delete when you uninstalled last time and its gonna have the be another uninstall then delete that Steam program folder if its still there. Make sure to tick the boxes to delete all user data etc. when uninstalling too.
