My thoughts on the google home mini

So, my uncle recently gifted me his old google home mini(he has a regular google home now) so I decided "why not write a blog post about my thoughts from the month or so of using it.)
It should be noted that I only really use this thing for music, my family doesn't have any other "smart" home things, and even if we did, I still wouldn't trust this thing, I have it unplugged when I'm not listening to music. Anyways on to the review. I will say, if you don't have any premium music subscriptions, this thing is pretty much useless to use by voice, since every service(well, the ones I tried, youtube music and spotify) require you to have a premium subscription to select exact songs/albums. Luckily, if you dont have any of those, or you listen to music off local files, you can just use it as a standard bluetooth speaker, which it works decently enough as. Luckily I do have a Spotify premium subscription(before you say it's a waste of money my dad pays for it, so he's the dude you should be telling this). I will say that the google home mini works well with other devices, for example I can go "hey google play archangel by burial", then I can open my spotify on my pc/phone, and without even having to connect or anything, I can just control songs from my pc/phone. This is nice as google sometimes has no idea wtf im talking about, or if I want to play a song that has a long ass title(for example, ANYTHING off of syro by aphex twin). One annoying thing is that even after I specified spotify as the default music provider, I still have to manually go "on spotify" every single goddamned time I want to play a song, or else it'll just give me a bunch of bullshit "ReLaTeD" songs, which are always so fucking inaccurate, like I asked for burial and I got fucking SKRILLEX of all people. All in all, as nothing more than a bluetooth speaker, the google home mini is pretty nice, hell, as I write this review I'm using it to listen to music(for those of you wondering what I'm listening to, I'm listening to Ghost Hardware by Burial).
Should you buy it?
I don't fucking know, do I look like I know anything about bluetooth speakers?
(if your answer was yes, I'm sorry to disappoint but I do not know anything nor do I give a shit about bluetooth speakers)
If you want some music reccomendations, then check out glass beach, I specifically reccomend the first glass beach album, I fucking love this album, one of the few albums I own on vinyl.
If you want more recs, check out my last.fm or my rateyourmusic(shameless plug), or just ask me lol, I'm always open to talking about music.
(that was a complete fucking mess lmao, im sorry for those of you that had to read my insane ramblings)

i have a smart plug
i go turn it on turn it off becuase i have my charger in it
other then that yes its just a bluetooth speaker (or chromecast if you have android or stinky browser with its name that is taken from periodic table of elements)
also yeah your fucked if you dont have a subscription for anything which is why my nest (second gen google home) is just a fancy switch
oh also i own both the nest second gen and home and the only difference is that on the nest i you hover over your hand the side leds light up to tell you where you need to tap to change volume

tl;dr good bluetooth speaker and chromecast speaker and to my experience good speaking power switch

EDIT: oh a few more things the mic switch is hardware level so it should be fine to leave it on always with the hardware level switch (me personally thinks it takes way too long to boot up)

Well, as someone with a semi-smart home (Most rooms we use have a Google/Nest speaker somewhere) I do actually know how you can use your Home Mini as a bluetooth speaker only, and not need to constantly plug it in every time (just leave it plugged ig lol)
1. Get a WiFi router or extender that's not in use (if you have a PC with WiFi, connect it to your modem/main router via ethernet, boot into Ubuntu, and use the PC as a wifi hotspot for now)
2. Set the SSID/Password to whatever you want
3. Set up the Home Mini onto that network
4. Factory reset the router/extender, or delete the hotspot you made
5. Home Mini is no longer able to connect to the internet, but will still function as a bluetooth speaker!

edit: also if you later decide you want to actually use your smart speaker as an actual smart speaker, either A. open the Home app and set it up again, this time with your actual WiFi.

If the Home Mini isn't broadcasting a setup network, (which it does as a failsafe when it can't connect to the internet) factory reset it.
1. Plug in the Home Mini, wait for it to boot (there'll be a chime, usually)
2. Flip it over and hold the button on the underside, until the Assistant says "You are about to factory reset this device".
Keep holding it until it starts the factory reset, then wait like a minute or two
