How VRchat changed me as a cat

Introduction:

Once upon a last year

I hopped into a game called VRchat. The biggest social VR game, and one of the biggest VR games in general (if not the biggest).

Their motto: Home to thousands of worlds

And let me just say

There really are thousands of unique worlds to go to. You can probably find a unique world you care about every day until the day you die. Cities, big in-depth hotels, conventions, the biggest ever VR event known as V-Ket (Virtual Market) that has sponsors including some big names such as… Disney, HP, Hololive, and tons more. There’s bars of all kinds, magnificent beaches and forests that you won’t see anywhere else. Private islands, personal mansions, haunted houses, cursed meme places that’ll melt your brain cells and hurt you and keep you up at night, anything you want can be found there!

Endless opportunities- infinite realities- VRchat is the closest I’ve seen so far to what VR truly strives for as a whole.

You can go anywhere

Be anyone you want!

A furry, a big ass MILF, a generic human, a creepy baby, a robot, a goat, Suction Cup man, a chair, a king, a president, a 3D Scan of your mom, these are all fucked examples I’m sorry, but anything you imagine!

The problem- is simply the people. Just like walking around being social in real life, the people you meet will be totally up to chance. Go to some real life park- you might meet someone there who becomes your enemy, or you might meet your future wife- who knows?

And that’s what turns most people off from VRchat. They don’t initially have the best luck meeting people, because newbies go to popular worlds, and popular worlds attract people from every end of the human spectrum. It’s a struggle of being able to stick around until you eventually find those people who’ll keep you always coming back.

Introductions out of the way, we’ll get to the main topic of today:

VRchat has given me social therapy you cannot find anywhere else.

An estimated 7% of the population deals with social anxiety.

I am an antisocial cat. Or was. I have Asperger’s- a form of autism. Over the years, I would personally say I’ve made great strides improving my social abilities. Time went by, and I slowly built up at least some courage and whatnot.

But I was still a bit of a mess socially-

Still a mute whenever possible.

Still had social anxiety.

Still was overly self-conscious

Last year, I started playing this game called VRchat (ever heard of it? ❍ᴥ❍), and I was… still a mute. Very quiet and shy.

Haha I’m still antisocial and a shut-in.

I had learned by now to at least… converse well with my friends- even if I was still always the quietest one. Always quiet. I started doing VRchat a little more often.

Since then, I’ve jumped to frequently diving in. I learned how to be extroverted, how to be loud and socialize. How to talk to anyone. It feels… so fucking amazing.

In VR, you can be whoever you want. You don’t need to worry about how you look or how people view you in real life- they don’t care about how you look behind the headset. They don’t judge you for those things. You’re in Virtual Reality, and they’re all there with you. They don’t care if you’re bad at something- you don’t need to be embarrassed at how bad your hand-eye coordination is, or how bad you are at virtual dodgeball. In the end, everyone’s there because everyone else is there.

VRchat is a social platform that people can join form all over the world. You get the opportunity to talk to anyone you come across. If you embarrass yourself or say something wrong or the conversation goes stale, we’ll guess what? You never have to see that person again. Hit it off or instantly click with someone? Well you can friend them and see them again whenever you want. You don’t need to feel nearly as anxious or self-conscious. There’s no consequence, which makes it incredible for teaching people how to socialize or communicate.
There’s all kinds of people- and there will always be a group that you’ll fit in to. Something for everyone.

Learning to socialize in VR helps build self confidence and helps you realize that, well… other people’s opinions are their own.

You can be yourself.

VRchat

It has taught me how to be a whole new me. A different cat. A happier one. I learned how to socialize and talk to people for real, without being anxious.
It helped me with my anxiety- with being around groups of people- with insecurities- and with so many things I’d have never changed without that experience.

To the point where I was able to be myself live on stream
