I don't get coffee

I have drank coffee many times especially as a kid but for some reason I lost a taste for it as an adult. I did try to drink it recently but I discovered it raised my blood pressure and heart rate. I know that isn't the case for everyone, but the more I think about it I don't get it.

Most people that drink coffee aren't about to exercise. So why do you need it?

Since I've gotten off coffee and most caffeine I feel so much more clearheaded. I go to the gym every day yes 7 days a week, and I don't need caffeine to do strenuous exercise at all and I'm someone who has diabetes and health issues.. So why would someone who is just sitting around need it?

I understand a little bit needing it to wake up. But it reminds me of something I was taught in school about cigarettes. Before you ever smoke you are at a certain level, then you smart smoking and you get sort of a buzz from it. But after repeated daily use you end up at a lower level than you started and need the cigarette just to get back to the level you started before you ever smoked. So it's an addition.

I believe coffee works in a similar way. Sure you get a buzz especially when you haven't drank it in a while. But once it becomes many cups a day you don't really get that buzz and you end up dependent on it. Most likely feeling lower than before you started drinking coffee and needing it to get back to normal levels. It's is absolutely a drug. Maybe not like cocaine or heroine that kills you, but it's an addictive substance that isn't necessary.

I do acknowledge that they say there's some health benefits I concede that, but you can likely get those and more from green tea (which I am an avid drinker of and I think is great I brew tons of it). But as far as coffee it for energy throughout the day and drinking it constantly I don't really get it. I feel fantastic better than I ever have off of it. My family including my mom are all coffee drinkers big time. But I don't think it does much to help them other than feed their addiction for it. I just don't think our bodies were created to run off caffeine like a car does gasoline. My energy levels are fine without it.

It's not about need, it's about taste. Unless you just drink shitty coffee for its caffeine.
Of course it's not for everybody. Not everyone enjoys steak, not everyone enjoys pizza, not everyone enjoys videogames.

Also, coffee is pretty good for your liver.
And of course caffeine is a drug.

I hope you're not advocating spending $8 to go to Starbucks to drink some fancy coffee. Those people are idiots.

Edit: you're in another country, so probably not.

Coffee is a delicacy, like drinking good wine or craft beer. I don't drink it to get a buzz, I drink it because I enjoy it. Akin to enjoying sips of a good glass of wine instead of just drinking it to get drunk.

To enjoy coffee properly it needs to be made with an espresso machine by a trained barista, with good quality beans. Percolated, filter, plunger or instant coffee won't be the same. If the beans are good and it is brewed well it will taste ok but people mainly would just drink it to wake up.

Your profile says you're from the U.S., I hear there are some good Australian cafés in New York, try a coffee from one of those and you might start liking it again (but that might also send you into a deep depression once you realise it is impossible to find good coffee elsewhere in the country).

(That being said, I've never enjoyed beer, even when trying really good craft beers, so trying something good might not mean you learn to like it)

First time I have ever heard anyone call Starbucks coffee fancy. That place sells the absolute worse coffee going. Hacienda La Esmeralda or Kopi Luwak is truly what can be called fancy coffee.

USA is a big country BTW. I live 1,795 miles from New York and I have no interest in taking a vacation there. Actually used to live one state over from it but never went. I'm not really interested in coffee for taste. I'm thriving without it.

Haha kopi lowak, possum poo coffee right? :D A colleague brought some back from Bali, it tasted pretty good!
And yeah Starbucks isn't nice, it is way too sweet even with no sugar added. They tried bringing it here and after a few years I think like 90% of the franchises closed :P I did enjoy how they had lots of comfy couches though, used to be a nice place to hang out.

AmandaRose I wouldn't know if it's fancy or not, don't really care. Just giving it a label. Have never and never will step foot into one or try their coffee so it can be the greatest drink in the world or taste like diarrhea I would never know/care.

QuantumCat well you all are hung up on taste I'm talking about the typical American who wakes up drinks a cup and has 5 or 6 more during the day. They depend on it.

It's a hardcore drug addiction. The longer you use, the worse the withdrawal. And it ages you horribly. But as a stimulant I like the idea of people drinking it before driving a car/plane/forklift to improve response time.

Like nearly anything else, this is going to come down to individual preference. When you're a teenager or in your twenties, caffeine is just like a hat on a hat...your body already creates a ton of its own energy. You hit your mid-thirties or your forties, and that will rapidly change. You'll need 2-3 cups a day just to get back to that same energy level you used to have. For that very reason, there are a number of studies which show that adults who drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day are happier than those that don't drink any.

I'm only 33 and I already require at least two cups a day to stay on my feet. Most of the other options for caffeine intake are a lot worse for your health (energy drinks, soda), so I try to avoid those as best I can.

Xzi I'm not denying those studies they could be 100% true, but all I know is I'm 38 and I do better without it. The only caffeine I have is the little that's in green tea and I feel fantastic. Probably due to daily exercise.

@JayMathis I suppose so, genetics also play a factor. I'll usually drink a cup 30-45 minutes before I workout.

As this is conversation is kind of international I think we should define what is a cup.
I mean, sometimes that I've been to the USA I've found me amused they call "A glass of Cola" something that's about 1 liter.
When I say a cup, I mean 200-250 milliliter. I know this is the definition of "a legal cup", but who knows what each of you call a cup.

Everyone at my home group (including me) use coffee like crack, because it's still considered sobriety, but we can get a "buzz". cigarettes are also a hot commodity in NA.

@JayMathis you asked what the deal was with coffee, we told you, but you seem to think you know already so why bother asking? Or was this just a rhetorical question where you wanted us to agree with the opinion you already held?

The problem with coffee is like any drug, people abuse it. Of course when you drink it to excess its gonna push up your blood pressure and pulse rate. But it smaller doses say one or two regular cups a day, like wine it has a lot off benefits.

To be honest. I always drink black decaf and no sugars at all. I drank only once every other days. I drink green tea and no sugars everyday. Healthy!
