Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Leaks

Alright, if you haven't heard by now you must be living under a rock. Apparently, Mexican stores sold the game just a tad bit early. You know, the casual two fuckin weeks early. That is insanely massive, especially for game of Smash's magnitude. Honestly, it kind of makes me mad. I am not mad that I wasn't one of the "chosen" that managed to get my hands on a copy. I am not mad that the stores sold the game early. I am not even mad that people are playing the game early. What I am mad about is that people are uploading the contents (like World of Light) cutscenes for their 15 minutes of fame. Two weeks early, and the game is already being modded. I am just disappointed in the people that uploaded the game or who datamined it. You know, if this was like 2 days before I would be perfectly fine with it, but two weeks. I can only imagine the pain the development team is going through right now. There is no argument that could persuade me that the dumps of this game and the leaks that are occurring have any reason to exist aside from the selfishness of the people dumping/leaking it. Sorry, just had to get this off my chest.

@Xzi where did I say the game is low quality? All I said was that the game is nothing new, its repetitive, its the exact same as the previous game and the hype surrounding it is way too disproportionately high.

@Treeko It's only "nothing new" for people that care solely about casual play. The mechanics and balance adjustments made from Sm4sh to Ultimate are pretty major for hardcore and pro players. In addition to the changes I already mentioned, there's a lot less end lag on every character's move set and more moves can KO, so matches in general are going to be a lot faster.

Hazards off is also going to make a lot more stages viable for competitive play, although I forget if that was also in Sm4sh. I don't think it was.

@Xzi Well I don't care much about competitive, but for a game thats supposed to carry the switch for the upcoming holiday season its not as good as last years offerings.

@deinonychus71 well you got a point, its always the case with nintendo franchises, but for gaming in general I find it to be boring and not too exciting as its being made out to be.

@Treeko It sounds like you're not a big fan of Smash Bros games in general, but you already admitted yourself that it's gonna sell like crazy anyway. Smash Bros is 'THE' game for any Nintendo console as far as some people are concerned and it's getting more pre-orders than even Nintendo expected, so I doubt the vast majority are going to be disappointed by Ultimate.

@ShadowOne333 So, say that one of your favorite franchises of games got its next release leaked out 2 weeks early. Would you be fine with that because it is just a stupid game and the greedy company that made it is charging 60 U.S. dollars to purchase it new. Or would you be defending the game because you like the series.
The reason why people are ticked off that Smash Ultimate got leaked along with all of the cutscenes is because Sakurai didn’t include a story mode in the Wii U version of Sm4sh due to the cutscenes potential of all the cutscenes being leaked. Now imagine being Sakurai, and watching all of the hard work he has put into this game, all the love, lack of sleep, etc., be leaked out 2 weeks before anyone was supposed to see all the surprises that were in store for us. Think of how frustrating and annoying all of that must be for him and the dev team.
Now for all of the other people saying how almost all of the game was spoiled for us from all of these Nintendo Directs. It was clearly going to be spoiled now, so why not just release the news officially, and get us all hyped up for the game.

Again for Smash Brothers? Every cut scene I have seen in them is an amusing little sequence involving the characters in question. I will certainly not begrudge anybody deriving some amusement from them and would be happy to note it as part of good game design in a review or something (reward your players for completing a challenge... fairly basic game design there) but to be especially upset about it is so very strange to me.
I never bought the rationale for the lack of them in another game. It seems almost akin to "well there are already comics and books of this work out there already so we are not going to make it".
Were it a heavily story based game then it might change something, but not a lot (if you care about spoilers you are presumably already aware of the avoidance methods, same deal).

Leaking a few weeks ahead of time? Happened for years now with any number of games and they should probably expect it to happen.

Anyway I am also curious about people using the term datamining for this. It is not the first time I have heard it, though it was on a vanishingly small number of occasions, and in some ways it is not inaccurate it is still not something I expect to hear as much as ROM hacking or something.

So because people are deriving enjoyment from a good game before some arbitrary date, it's something to feel bad about?

@FAST6191: This is definitely datamining in this case. All files are contained within one big archive file so you need to get the good old hex editor to figure out where is everything and properly extract them. Even the songs are packed this time around (unlike Smash 4)

@Treeko I mean obviously that's your right to get bored of it. It does get repetitive at times but it's still a must have for party with friends, so it'll always have success.
I've always said though that this type of game would be better off being a GaaS rather than trying to make it sound like they're new versions. Just keep adding content like a lot of successful franchises.

@deinonychus71 Successful franchises don't just add new content though, they release a new game every year and then add new content to each of them. It would be a lot worse if Nintendo went the Call of Duty route with Smash Bros, so be careful what you wish for.

@Xzi
League of Legend doesn't, Minecraft doesn't, Fortnite doesn't, Rocket League doesn't...
Call of Duty isn't really a GaaS. They're still stuck on the old model.

@deinonychus71 Yeah I get what you're saying, but the common denominator with those games is that they're all PC-focused and multiplatform. As long as Sony and Nintendo keep releasing new consoles, there's not a lot of incentive to port over last-gen exclusives and keep updating them as opposed to just releasing another sequel.

I saw a Facebook post rant about the same exact thing, said it once and I'll say it again:

Not making a story campaign for a game because people will upload the cutscenes is such a shitty excuse.
If people want spoilers they'll know where to find them, its up to the individual player to seek such spoilers or not, everything gets uploaded to the internet, no matter how much of a ''snow flake'' the game is or not.

Now if people are shoving those spoilers in your face that's one thing, but if the cut scenes are being uploaded to Youtube and if you want access to them and ruin your expectations and/or gaming experience then that's entirely up to you.

Also I don't feel sorry for people who bricked their Switch trying to run illegal copies on their modified Switch, even if they did or not pre-ordered the game.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
