biased scoring and rating games

why is it that more and more were seeing really high numbers when it comes to rating a game? And from everything ive seen, each game has a different scoring criteria to justify its really high score. there needs be some sort of 'unified rules for the scoring of video games'

for instance there were lots of 10s for CELESTE because of this that and this yet none of them mentioned the 'graphics' which would clearly be a 1/10 or story which would be a 2/10... but overall its a 10... yet there are 3ds games that are much much better in all imaginary categories but being 240*2p make all 3ds games nothing higher than an 8...

God of War gets a 10/10 for graphics, story and sound but The Order gets 6/10 and Uncharted 4 get s a 8/10. Even though I could argue The order and Uncharted had better stories, gameplay, and blahblahblah the ps4s control sticks suck balls and it results in very clunky gameplay for every single ps4 game yet that doesnt factor in?

its biased fanboyism. even from the top metacritic sites and such. paid shills.

for something like Monster Hunter it always gets something around a 8.5 across all consoles regardless of pixel count and i think those are accurate ratings. But when it comes to some games i hate when people try to justify score based solely on a books cover or in this instance, graphics.

Comments

its because people how to score correctly and believe that 7/10 is an average game when it really should be more like a 5, but saying this i have always found scoring games out of ten, one hundred or bananas is completely arbitrary most the time fluctuating more on peoples moods or how popular/powerful the dev/publisher is .

The ps4 control sticks suck balls? Woah, the switch joycons ones are far worse, but you dont see me shitting on them on blogs

except this one.

i disagree on the switch vs ps4 sticks. sure the switch stiks are loose but gameplay is smooth, with the ps4 there seems be a lot of dead zones and the diagonals are flat out broken. its not a comfort thing, its a complete control thing.

going from ps4 to xbox1 joystick i notice it right away. and its a HUGE difference. the ps4 cheaped out on their sticks and it was noticable going from ps3 to ps4 also

I would suggest looking at community ratings and not the ones given by major publications (which are biased).

The dualshock 4 analog sticks are just fine, wth?
It was worse in Dualshock 3 yeah but Dualshock 4 are just perfectly, the right sensitivity.
Clean your analog sticks once in a while.

@uiaad, 7.5 is a damn good score. but nowadays people dont want to buy anything if its not a 9/10 and therefore these companies pay these sites to give them a higher than what it really is score, and some people who buy it and play it and agree just because this or that site told them what score it was.

for example God of War 2018, i experienced it and it was a okay. so i looked at the review here at gbatemp (it was a good review) but i disagreed with the score, i searched it up and a lot of people gave it very high scores. Maybe its because there arent many games being made anymore or something, but IMO gow2018 was not a 10

@gameboy I completely agree with you 7/10 is a good score, what im saying is that people have forgotten how some things should work, with 5/10 being an middling ok game but it all about who you are reviewing these days rather than what your reviewing

@Yepi69, it something to do with the controller itself, ps4 seems to only recognis 8 directions while everything else is closer to the full 360 range

i cant experience a smooth gameplay with the joycons, they are too small, the sticks are even smaller, and paying more than 60 bucks for the pro controller is a totall ripoff...

The xbox one controller is perfect, the ps4 is pretty nice overall, but the joycons? oof...

>why is it that more and more were seeing really high numbers when it comes to rating a game?

I wouldn't call it "more and more". It's clear that most often 10/10 == the game met my expectations. Yet a 10/10 should really be == this is an amazing game in some aspect while meeting a variety of my expectations. It's also pretty useless usually to give a total score (even though I did the same) because you can't just average all the components or otherwise really reduce all the components down to a single number or scale.

This also was (originally) the core of gamergate: most websites reviewing games were getting free games, not mentioning it, then giving those games better scores than random games they might have to actually buy. That seems to have improved some (more sites seem to actually mention when they get a free copy of something) but the scores are almost always ridiculous. Add in stuff like trying to compare a game from 2002 to 2018. Or how many people complain about things for no good reason.

tl;dr - Scores are dumb. Good journalism presenting what the game is is better. The rest is being good about ignoring sites/reviewers who clearly do a bad job at that.

the joycons i can see why you have a problem but me playing zelda, mario, mariokart, i have no problems with full control, although there is a problem with all joyscons in which they sometimes stick to the upper-right sector of the circle.

@kuwanger, agree. 10 is above expectation. BotW to me was a 10, it surpassed my expectations. people knock it for its graphics but the graphics are on par with the system limitations. A lot of 3ds games are 10s but they cant get past the fact that its 240p. And some games look so good they forget to rate anything else...

'unified rules for the scoring of video games'
Can't be done or would be so complex as to be pointless*. Better to read the reviews them come with. If you don't agree with the person of their tastes don't align with yours then find someone else.
Now if you want to discuss the failings of reviews, and it appears you touched on that in the OP and further comments, then that is a different matter.

*last football game I played. 0/10. Bored me to death, mainly because it was football and most things football that aren't dealing with all the cons and shady dealings that make it up bore me to death. Should someone have actually liked football though I imagine it was a competent game -- mechanically it played like a refined version of others I played before and witnessed people genuinely having fun playing. That is an extreme example though. I like first person shooting games, however I very much lean towards long-mid range tactical and methodical type games rather than close quarters bullet sponge type affairs. There are times I don't but they are rare and when they work for me they are usually exceptional examples of the concept.

"BotW to me was a 10, it surpassed my expectations."
Surpassed mine as well. Instead of a bad "my first open world" like the early trailers indicated we instead got a middle of the road open world game, the likes of which I could have got on the xbox, PS3, xbox 360 and PC from similar timeframes. If you had only had a Wii and either started with that or come from a PS2 or something then yeah I could see it being spectacular relative to anything there (at least as far as open world goes, compelling "RPG" type gameplay and more freeform combat could have been had on the PS2).

dude i actually play the football games since 1996 and i agree with the 0/10. the graphics are good and the sound is fantastic but the game as a whole, a colossal mess, most people you see play it with a large fanbase are paid shills. The new madden havent been sell well either because of all the blatant racism and sjw involved. but if you were to judge those games mostly on graphics they'd be a solid 8.

as with botw it can certainly improve but its a 10

Surely a completely unbiased review would require not conveying any opinions... That'd make the arbitrary x/10 score (which imo is a stupid convention anyway) impossible.

I suppose this is the obligatory reply when people talk about unbiased reviews lol

You just have to remember these are opinions. A ten for myself may not be a ten for you, and even my criteria for a ten would differ from genre to genre and system to system. You say a 3DS game can't be a 10 because it has a 240p screen? So? The system has plenty of stunning games despite that limitation, arguably more impressive than the 4K AAA games you mentioned. But like I said, opinions. Yours are yours, and mine are my own. Remember to read the review instead of just looking at the score, and if you disagree with what's put across, comment saying so, or even write your own to put across your own views.

Wanna know something? Ignore scores, if you enjoy the game, just enjoy the game, if you think you can do better, then you have every right to try. While the ongoing theme of paid reviews for favorable scores is reacquiring thing around the internet, most of them are biased, right? Isn't a review biased anyway? Logically speaking, if you play a game you enjoy, you think it's a good game deserving praise, if you play a bad game, you wouldn't praise the game just ignore or not discuss it. I have done reviews for GBATemp, hardly anyone cares to read them and the ones that people do comment on, people either agree or disagree with my comments. Nothing in this world is perfect and as long as opinions exist, this will be the case for reviews.

Number scores are retarded and will never be good. If you ever want to get something out of a review, read it instead of just looking at the numbers. All I do is pick the first number that pops into my head.

You are too focused on numbers. A 9 for 3DS game doesn't mean it's better than a PS4 game with a 8.
But since there is no unified objective way to review games numbers will not make sense when comparing to other games. So its pointless to compare and complain about numbers.

I think there are a lot of reviewers people complain about being payed off but actually aren't. They just convinced themselves they are because of things they made up about the person. Is a certain reviewer payed off? Who knows. Only way of knowing is if someone has evidence of it.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
