Reminding others of their responsibilities?

Is it a bad thing? To voluntarily remind someone else stuff? If someone asks you to remind them of something, then you do it. But if that someone doesn't ask you to do so and you do it without them telling you, and then later tell you "it is not your responsibility and/or obligation to remind me of that since I am now older (basically saying "im an adult") and it's my responsibility, not yours."

Hmm...well, this happened this morning to me. My new boyfriend (like a new toy or something haha), Alan, told me that this morning in a text and I don't know what to think of that. I will give more context.

So, we've been out bf/gf for the past 2 months now and I've known him for 2 years. Sweet guy and all, always caring and such. We are obviously still getting to know each other as time goes. I have asked him to remind me of things so that I won't forget, like reminding me to take my medicine or vitamins at certain times, or to remind me to send some emails that I know I can forget, things like that. I have no problem being reminded to do said tasks.

He has also asked me to remind him to do similar things. Or when he recently got sick, I told him to go to the doctor but knowing him he doesn't normally do it so I grabbed his hand the next day and took him to a doctor I trust. He was okay with that because he didn't stop me or anything. It was for his health and well, I care for him just like a couple should do right?

So days passed and we were talking at the park with ice cream, just like on tv and movies. He said he had much to think about and was feeling the need to talk with his therapist. Yes, therapy because of sad events that happened in his past and his therapist has helped him a lot. I told him that would be a good idea to get things off his chest or for whatever. It was a Friday and I told him to text/call his therapist to schedule a meeting for next week (Monday at least) and that I would remind him to do so again on Saturday.

Well I forgot to remind him, of course he didn't ask me to, but I was going to voluntarily. On Tuesday afternoon he sent me an audio clip (we do this when we feel lazy to text) saying he forgot to call/text his therapist and that he wouldn't be able to until next week because he's on vacation and Monday was his only day to have seen Alan.

I replied "I'm sorry that i forgot to remind you to text/call your therapist for a scheduled meeting. I should have remembered to do so."
And that's when he sent me the main message about that not being my responsibility and how I shouldn't worry about his own things, etc.

Now that I see it, it may sound like I'm trying to be pushy on that but I was doing it out of my heart.

Then again, was it wrong of me to do this?
Are we not to help and/or support each other in a relationship?
I guess it depends on the person but I would have appreciated it.

So I don't really know how to respond to that. =p

Hope everyone has a great day/night!

Yumi my dear <3
(I'm reading your blog, I just wanted to be the first to post :D )

This is kinda tough. I guess in this situation you would take on as much responsibly as you feel necessary. He's right in a sense that it's not your responsibility to remind him about certain things, it's his. However. If you care about him, there is nothing wrong with your trying to help remind him about things he might forget. So long as you don't enter into overbearing territory. I am sure you have a long way to go before that happens though.

There are any number of reasons he could have responded that way. I for one some times forget to call someone I need to or just plain refuse to do it. I have a bit of phone anxiety. Maybe Alan has a bit of a social anxiety with someone he doesn't know ( like the doctor).

Something else to remember is that you are responding from within your own head to what he is showing on the outside. You probably don't know everything that is going on inside his head and that could very well be what is causing this sort of communication break down. I don't think you did anything wrong.

It doesn't sound like he meant that you shouldn't remind him or that it would be wrong to do so. Just that you shouldn't take the blame for him forgetting to do it.

I think you're just making a storm in a teacup. I believe he just said that so you wouldn't blame yourself, that's all it seems like it. It wasn't your fault and he didn't seem to mind either.

Thank you guys for the input.
Well now I at least know I didn't do anything wrong which was what was worrying me a bit.
I suppose i do get a bit carried away since I tend to think on stuff a bit too much. That's just me though.
Like always, i appreciate everyones opinion and such. Always feel free to say whatever. ^_^

You are going to freak yourself out.

when he said you should remind him, he was MOST probably saying "No, no, I dont want you to worry about me, you have other things to worry about; like your own life."
Which sounds right, basically he doesnt want his problems become yours.
