Nintendo won the battle vs pirates - discuss

The new 3ds hacking methods are far too complicated and risky for online activity etc

I mean, the average joe coming to this forum with a new 3ds and wanting to run pirated games has to read about a hundred pages just to understand the correct procedures, limitations and risks.

Nintendo did well, they won.

Sky3DS works fairly easily... And battling pirates is stupid and waste of resources. It's a boogeyman chase. Otherwise Piracy would have killed the 360 and made the PS3 truly successful and not a borderline disaster up to its midcycle when it was finally broken. The DS wouldn't have broke sales numbers, both software and hardware, at all because it was hacked so early in its lifespan. The PSP never would have "recovered from piracy", or rather recover from Sony's disastrous handling of it.

It's just fairly frustrating seeing resources be wasted on anti-piracy and anti-homebrew measures. But anyways, no Nintendo didn't win much of anything as long as Sky3DS exists as an easy and viable solution.

Well, good for them?

I'll just go back to playing my English Patched Fire Emblem If and playing online matches.

But was it as easy as with the old DS carts, or did you have to spend a lot of time setting it up? And isn't it a worry that Nintendo might pull the plug on the pirated online cartridges anytime soon?

What do you mean by Nintendo pulling the plug?

Piracy on the N3DS is incredibly simple. If you want to take the flashcard route, all you do is grab a Sky3DS and get playing or a Gateway with CN/OoT3D and then get playing. If you want to roll with CFW, Pasta is easy to run with CN.

As for playing online, a private header extracted from a game you own (or from a friend's game, etc) will make you completely immune to being banned. Unless you majorly mess up by excessively hacking (cheated charms/armor in Monster Hunter, unlimited blue shells in Mario Kart, etc), you'll be fine.

It wasn't as easy as with old DS flashcarts, sure, but it didn't take a lot of time to set up CFWs either. I'm an average joe and I was able to get CFWs up and running just fine and dandy. Having to use a CFW without buying a flashcart is 100x better. Because, like rxTools, it can be relatively free to use without having to buy a flashcart.
And dude, 3DS piracy barely affects Nintendo. The majority of 3DS owners can't even hack their 3DS because they've already updated their 3DS to firmwares 9.3+. The threat of piracy on the 3DS is a lot less smaller compared to how it was with the DS. They could have "pulled the plug on the pirated online cartridges" with the DS games a long time ago. But were they able to do it? Nope, they tried and DS roms are still here.

Anyway, back to the game. :gba:

And although you can get roms from other websites, you also get access to *ROM SITE*, which is meant only for roms, other sites might have fake stuff.

It's really not that complicated, and with Ninjhax now supporting 9.9, a kernel exploit on 9.9 is a lot more likely to happen. It didn't take long after Ninjhax 1.0 until GW released GW Ultra with 9.x support. Nintendo have not won the battle, not as long as the Sky3DS isn't blocked. It seems like they won't bother with that though, maybe because they're planning on releasing their next handheld soon.

You mean the NX?

Not exactly... games in CIA format are still safe, and there are plenty of websites where you can download them. Piracy is still alive and kicking

DS(i) hacking was simpler but you needed a flashcard (that would frequently need updating or replacing on DSi)
3ds hacking is a bit more complex but you can do it completely free with no extra hardware on < 9.3.

It's give and take, but Nintendo hasn't 'won' nor have they lost -- it's a cat & mouse game.

(and if you want to bitch about complexity, holy shit look at wii hacking with it's IOS bs etc.)

I disagree. Anybody with experience modding the Xbox 360 will tell you that's a way bigger hassle. Modding the console either required you to pay somebody to do it for you, or open you console, connect your disk drive to your PC, pray to god you had a compatible SATA chipset, then dump your keys and write them back to the drive with the new firmware. The firmware was easily detectable to Microsoft, and mass banwaves for Xbox Live occurred right up to the introduction of the LT firmware. Aside from the modding, creating the backup media was a huge pain in the ass too. You have to use dual layer discs, which at the time of the height of Xbox modding, they were expensive at ~$1 a disc, and quite often produced coasters. Before you actually burnt the game to a disc though, you'd have to patch it with ABGX to verify it was safe enough for use without being banned from Live. Half the time, you'd have to wait up to a week before games were added to the database to be marked as safe.

Nintendo have made it stupidly simple. It's the people with poor reading comprehension or no patience that mess things up beyond repair.

Not sure if troll...or ignorant.

Also, this should probably go to EOF.

I'd argue that's a little much, but I completely agree that you have to do your research. I've have yet to hack my 3DS, but with reading a handful of the forums here, there are quite a handful of things to be meticulous/cautious of.

So, let me get this straight. Assuming that you're on worst-case scenario with a fully-updated N3DS and the most options are not available to you. You buy a flash card (Sky3DS or a clone), and have access to pirating all the games you want. You can access a good amount of homebrew via Ninjhax 2.0, and get online access by buying any bargain-bin crap 3DS game, and following some simple directions to apply the header to your Sky3DS roms.

How exactly has Nintendo "won", exactly? I suppose they're getting sales from the crap game you had to buy in order to play online? Bit of a Pyrrhic victory, if you ask me.
