Apparently my dad failed

At parenting because.. I don't believe in God.

I never knew until now that I had a godparent in case something happens or whatever, and I said "please don't tell me I have one" He said "uh yeah.. why wouldn't you?"

"Because I don't believe in any of that stuff."
"Please don't say that, you have to in case something happens to me or your mom."
"I just don't believe in it. I haven't for years."
"Well then I've clearly failed as a parent if my own son doesn't believe in God."

Frankly, this might upset the people who do believe in this stuff, I think it's crap. I don't see why we have to pay lots of money to learn the teachings of something that claims to be so crucial to life. It sounds like a scam to me. I don't believe in it, I have no reason to. There's no point in believing in something if at crucial times, nothing will happen when praying to said something.

Anyways, what do you guys think about the whole religion stuff?

Comments

People are still going to die whether you pray or not. Its a curse and also a message that you cant fight god. As an islam, i say god exist and things happen for a reason.
I respect you all for guiding your own life but clearly buisness with god or your soul should be done privately. Its your choice.

He said something like that? From the first post of yours, all I got was that you made him feel like shit so he made you feel like shit.

No no no. It's hard to explain what me and my dad feel. But that's, if you break it down, what he said to me if you think about it. He wants me to believe in God, if I don't he says he's failed. And I interpret that as him basically saying I HAVE to believe in God.

When you were younger, did he take you to church and teach you the ways of said religion?

That's the only reason I could think of that would cause him to say that line.

Religion rant.
The problem with religion is that barely anyone actually understands what religion actually is.
Atheist, christian, catholic...it really doesn't matter, most people don't usually understand, or put any thought into, why it is they actually call themselves whatever they do, outside of shallow reasoning.

People take religion and beliefs too far though. The amount of idiots who hate other people based purely on what religion they follow, regardless of their reasons and understanding for what they follow, is ridiculous.

Though I will say, blindly following religion is the absolute worst. I'm so tired of people who follow a religion without knowing what the fuck they're following. Unfortunately, that'd be a heavy amount of people. Believe in God, but don't just blindly lable yourself a christian or catholic. It happens so often because so many kids are/were forced to go to church with their parents, and were forced into a religion without any real teaching.

Closely following that annoyance are loud mouth ignorant atheists. AKA, 95% of atheists. I'm really not going to explain this one, everyone should know what i'm talking about.

Godparents aren't an overly religious thing these days. Its been watered down to essentially mean 'back-up parent'. Atheist or not, you shouldn't be fussed about having a godparent. You just look like a dork.
Your Dads response however, was pointlessly harsh. But you also have to realize that religion might be nailed into your father. The current generation is abouts when religion started to falter, it still had a pretty strong influence in our parents generation. It wasn't often a choice for them, and it's difficult for them to accept that it shouldn't be a choice for you being the 'wrong' mindset these days.

We stopped going when I was about 4 or 5. I kept falling asleep, and they didn't like the money they were required to pay. And when it comes to dinner or anything, we never pray or do anything like that. He's not the most religious person, that's why I was sort of shocked when he said what he said.

I was in a similar situation when I was younger, although my mom was (and still is) religious throughout. She raised me in a religion and when I got older, I started to do the same as you, doubting all aspects of religion and such. I even had that same line spit out at me when I was a kid. Then I realized that religion isn't always meant to be viewed through the scope of science and theories, it's heavily based on faith in most cases. Although others my refer to faith as dumb blind baseless following of an old book, the views vary based on the person. When I was in doubt of everything and viewing religion as a flawed system, I went through some tough shit and had my back to the ropes on more than one occasion. There have been times where I know I couldn't have walked away from things in one piece if someone up there hadn't intervened.

My point to all of this is, going to church and paying tithes, and following every word of the bible down to the letter isn't what classifies you as religious. Hell, I haven't been to church or picked up a bible since I was a kid and even then, most of the time it was just to follow along with everyone else. Nowadays, I've looked past the immaturity of my old days when I rejected all religion because it didn't make any sense to me. The shit I've seen, the shit I've been through, the times where I believe a higher power had stepped in to save my ass, that's what I consider to be my religion: the faith and belief in a God up there that has showed up on more than one occasion in which I would've otherwise been finished.

Your dad doesn't have to go to church and read the bible to be religious. Some of us just like to have our own personal, private, quiet time with our religion. Because at the end of the day, I don't really care what anybody else has to say about what I believe or how it differs from what they believe. We are two completely different people, they haven't been in my shoes, and I haven't been in their. Likewise, you shouldn't give a shit what anyone has to say about you not being religious. It's your belief, not theirs.

(But he's still your dad, you shouldn't harbor any ill-will because his views differ from yours, he raised you into who you are today, so he obviously hasn't failed)

IMHO Religion is only around so some people have something to believe in. They don't want to be in charge of their own destiny because that scares them. Having something to believe in gives them a little peace of mind I suppose. I went to church, but I just didn't believe in it. How can someone so powerful allow all the suffering in the world (I'm not talking about death, everyone has to die sometimes, but I'm talking about how they die, the pain they must go through)? So I had turned to Wicca, but there I did not find the answers I was seeking. Finally I just stopped believing. Praying to some being that might not exist seems pointless to me. I don't need religion to tell me what to do and what to believe in, I can shape my own destiny. I guess it's sorta hard to explain. I don't believe in heaven or hell. It's just blind faith is all.

That's what I never understood. He's always been one of those people who's just believed in God, not one of those religious people who pray or even really talk about it.. that's why it sort of caught me off guard when he said "Well you better believe in him."

[quote name='_Chaz_' post='3346451' date='Dec 24 2010, 09:06 AM']I thought that a godparent was just someone who took you in if your parents could no longer look after you.

I don't see why you can't have both.

Take charge of your own destiny and also have religious beliefs.

I think you're confusing most religious individuals for people that sit back and expect everything to fall in their lap without taking any personal initiative.

Hmm.. Eighteen thinks, it's not a scam that ppl pay to teach others stuff like that... some people like to have something to believe in.. gives them strenght or whatever.
Me don't expect you to understand...
..just hear this: Leave the people who believe in it in peace.

same goes to people who DON'T believe in stuff like that, like you, no biggie ^_^ .. just...
.. people who DO believe in that, should leave people like you as well in peace..

just believe what you want and stop annoy each other by keep asking/forcing to stop believing or believe in stuff.

Me wish everyone could think like that, but oh welllll ^_^

Personally, Eighteen believes in things.. me don't really care about god or whatever to be honest..
I just believe, be a good person, aaaand be nice to people.. that's it ^_^ nothing more nothing less..

Mhmm, Eighteen is a pretty simple and easy to understand person on this department, me suppose ^_^

You know whats funny and ironic the fact that atheist are a religion themselves and there religion is to basically not believe in religion and they don't even realize it.
