Just installed "Windows 10 Insider Preview 16299.15 (rs3_release)". Took bloody forever to install, but it's finally finished.
Now, here's the problem: as soon as I input my PIN and log in, I get a black screen. If I move my mouse, the cursor appears, and I can move it around, but nothing else works. I tried to click stuff blindly, but "there's nothing in the darkness". (Tried opening a game, so by the sounds, I would know if it opened.) If I wait enough, the screensaver appears.
Any solution to this?

Seems like Explorer (the Windows shell) isn't starting for whatever reason. Can you still get to Task Manager with Ctrl+Alt+Del? If you can then run it and start Explorer from "File" > "New Task".

Neither Ctrl + Alt + Del or Ctrl + Alt + Esc do anything.

Ok, can you attempt to run Task Manager from the Run prompt? I think it's tskmgr.exe. See if Explorer is already running, and if the DWM service is also running.
The Manager doesn't appear.

Try to boot into safe mode and see if it works. (Unless you're touched by the rare case of explorer corruption then nothing else can be done other than reinstall >.>)
If it works then you can go to event viewer and see what goes wrong.

Try Safe Mode. It could be an issue with your graphics driver, which could have been overwritten during the installation of 16299.15.

It should also be noted that 16299.15 is also RTM.

Safe Mode displays the desktop properly. What should I do?
The first thing I would do is go into your Device Manager and check your graphics driver. I'd write down what kind of graphics driver it is and what version is installed. Then, I'd uninstall the graphics driver and reboot in order to see what happens. If you're lucky, the computer will boot properly (albeit with potentially improper display settings). You can then install the latest drivers or, out of curiosity, see what Windows Update wants to install.

In the Device Manager, when you check your graphics driver, there will be an uninstall option.

I'm not sure why you're installing 16299.15 before its official release if you don't know what you're doing with drivers.

Hmm, yes. "Generic PnP Monitor" has an exclamation mark in Device Manager.

I love beta testing.

You could try booting into Safe Mode with Networking. Then, you can try manually checking for driver updates from the Device Manager. Alternatively, you could run something like a portable version of Driver Magician to see what it suggests installing.

Well, it's RTM, so I wouldn't call it beta-testing. I also wouldn't suggest beta-testing without the computer fluency needed to troubleshoot these kinds of common issues.

Windows Update is stuck on loading forever.

Installed Driver Magician, and it found these. Should I install all of them?

Is it the Slow branch, I'm looking for, then?

I know the risks of stuff like this, and I'm willing to learn (as I'm probably doing right now); I want to work in IT, after I finish my studies.
