Using Luma3DS + Gateway on B9S

SYSNAND-ONLY USERS: DO NOT BOOT GW MODE ON 11.3+ - YOU WILL LOSE B9S AND BE LEFT ON A STOCK FIRMWARE
I highly advise against the use of GW on SysNAND-Only Setups.
GW currently DOES NOT support firmwares 11.3//11.4 - B9S does not change that!
If you're on 11.3+ - Don't even try to use GW. Use Luma3DS or any other CFW that has confirmed support for 11.3+ firmwares.

Setting up GW with Luma3DS' chainloader

Requirements: SysNAND or EmuNAND on 11.2 or lower!
Tested and working on B9S 1.2 (Luma3DS 8.0)
  1. Download the v2gw.zip attached to this post.
  2. Extract the "arm9loaderhax.bin" from v2gw.zip to your /luma/payloads/ folder.
  3. Rename that very "arm9loaderhax.bin" you just extracted to "v2gw.bin" or to whatever you want. However, step 12 will assume v2gw.bin was used, you can edit that reference to meet whatever you decided to name it.
  4. Download GW's ‘arm9loaderhax.bin.zip‘ file.
    • On their main home page. Under the post titled: "GATEWAY 4.0B PRIVATE BETA #2"
    • Or on their openly public Private Beta Program page, on this page it'll be under the "» arm9loaderhax for users with existing a9lh installs" section.
  5. Extract GW's "arm9loaderhax.bin" file from their zip file to your /luma/payloads/ folder.
  6. Rename that very "arm9loaderhax.bin" you just extracted to "gateway.bin"
  7. Make sure you have the latest GW's Launcher.dat on the root of your SD Card.
  8. This dev-build of BootCTR9: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-the-bootctr9-release-thread.435347/page-3#post-7370533
  9. Extract the "boot.firm" file from the BootCTR9-firmv2.zip to your /luma/payloads/ folder.
  10. Rename that very "boot.firm" you just extracted to "down_BootCTR9.firm" or to whatever you want that is allowed by Luma3DS' payload chainloader.
    - Other button options: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Other-features-and-notes#payload-chainloading
  11. Extract the "boot_config.ini" file from from the BootCTR9-firmv2.zip to the root of your SD Card.
  12. Open the "boot_config.ini" file and overwrite everything with the following:
    Code:
    [BOOTCTR9]
    key_delay = 1000

    [DEFAULT]
    path = /luma/payloads/v2gw.bin
  13. You are now done. If you followed this tutorial, holding DPAD-DOWN at boot time, will load up Gateway Mode.
    - SysNAND-Only Users on 11.2 will be prompted to press 'L+R+SELECT' to boot SYSNAND. DO NOT PRESS THE BUTTON PROMPT ON 11.3+
    - GW EmuNAND users will automatically boot into their GW EmuNAND.

FAQ

Q: How do I boot into the GW Menu?
A: Hold L+Select, as soon as you see the Dragon Logo.

Q: Can I use my GW Blue Card?
A: Yes, but only while using Luma3DS. It will not work in GW Mode.

Q: Can I play online while in GW Mode?
A: Yes, sort-of. But you have to either:

Q: I'm getting a black screen!? HELP!?
A: Multiple reasons for that below:
  • Modified SecureInfo_A - GW does not patch this. You'll need an untouched donor file of this.
  • Using a RedNAND - GW only supports GW EmuNAND, it cannot boot RedNAND. Use the GW Menu or GodMode9 to make one.
  • On SysNAND-Only Setups - Not having properly removed EmuNAND//RedNAND. Use GodMode to properly format your SD Card. But I advise you set one up.
  • Trying to boot an 11.3//11.4 EmuNAND - GW does not support anything higher than 11.2
  • If it's not listed, then who knows. Do you have a modified Home Menu or font? Those might not work at all in GW Mode.

I highly advise against the use of GW for SysNAND-Only setups.

11.3&11.4 Break GW. GW currently DOES NOT support 11.3 or 11.4. You will either brick or lose A9LH. More than likely it seems you will just lose A9LH.

Again, if you attempt to boot GW Mode, on a SYSNAND-Only Setup while on 11.3 or 11.4, you will lose A9LH. It does not matter if you safely updated to this firmware via another CFW that safely protects FIRM.

If you want to use 11.3+, you will not be able to use GW. Don't even try. Only use Luma3DS or other CFW that support 11.3+

If you are a Gateway3DS user, and have recently finished Plailect's A9LH Guide, then you should be on v2 A9LH. Unfortunately, at the time this thread was made, GW's a9lh.bin file is incompatible with Luma3DS' payload chainloading feature while on v2 A9LH.

So one way around this was to either forego using Luma3DS' payload chainloading, and use a boot manager that does work in initializing GW's a9lh.bin correctly. Like BootCTR9. Either you let BootCTR9 handle all payloads, or you set it up to chainload into Luma3DS and from there let Luma3DS do all the work.

Either way, some people might not like BootCTR9 (Big fan of BootCTR9, seriously thing is amazing~!)

So if you don't want to use the BootCTR9 method, then @Hayleia made a very stripped down boot manager that only loads /luma/payloads/gateway.bin. You still need GW's a9lh.bin in addition to this stripped down bootmanager, but that's all you need, these two files! No need for messy configs if you just want to stick with Luma3DS' payload chainloader.

Now on to the damn tutorials already~!

Gateway Logo

1. Download the v2gw.zip attached to this post.
2. Extract the "arm9loaderhax.bin" from v2gw.zip to your /luma/payloads/ folder.
3. Rename that very "arm9loaderhax.bin" you just extracted to "down_v2gw.bin" or to whatever you want that is allowed by Luma3DS' payload chainloader.
Other button options: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Other-features-and-notes#payload-chainloading
4. Download GW's ‘arm9loaderhax.bin.zip‘ file.
You have to get this directly from Gateway's site. Which is either:
A) On their main home page.
B) Or on their openly public Private Beta Program page, on this page it'll be under the "» arm9loaderhax for users with existing a9lh installs" section.
8. You are now done. If you followed this tutorial, holding DPAD-DOWN at boot time, will load up Gateway Mode.
However, if you are a SysNAND Only User, and on 11.1 and using the 4.2 Launcher.dat, you will be prompted to press 'L+R+SELECT' to boot SYSNAND.
GW EmuNAND users will automatically boot into their GW EmuNAND.

Notes: To Boot into the GW Menu: Hold L+Select, as soon as you see the Dragon Logo.
To Force a Manual Gateway3DS RedCard Update: Hold R+Select as soon as you see the Dragon Logo.

No Gateway Logo (Not Recommend - Only for those allergic to the dragon logo - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK)

Notes: This version will de-init the screen by default, and as such you won't see the Gateway Logo. Don't worry it'll init once you land on the Home. Due to how this works, only GW EmuNAND users should consider using this. This is because SysNAND users will land on the SysNAND prompt nag.

1. Download the v2gw-de-init.zip attached to this post.
2. Extract the "v2gw.bin" from v2gw-de-init.zip to your /luma/payloads/ folder.
3. Rename that very "v2gw2.bin" you just extracted to "down_v2gw.bin" or to whatever you want that is allowed by Luma3DS' payload chainloader.
Other button options: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Other-features-and-notes#payload-chainloading
4. Download GW's ‘arm9loaderhax.bin.zip‘ file.
You have to get this directly from Gateway's site. Which is either:
A) On their main home page.
B) Or on their openly public Private Beta Program page, on this page it'll be under the "» arm9loaderhax for users with existing a9lh installs" section.
8. You are now done. If you followed this tutorial, holding DPAD-DOWN at boot time, will load up Gateway Mode without the Gateway Logo.

Tested on N3DS and O3DS by me, 2DS by @Hayleia.
Should work on either screen-init or non-screen-init v2 A9LH.

Important Note: Never update your SysNAND in Gateway Mode. It does not matter what Launcher.dat version you use, if you go ahead and update while in SysNAND Mode, you will either brick or lose A9LH+CFW and be on the latest stock firmware. This is because GW Mode does not offer FIRM protection in A9LH. Updating your GW EmuNAND is fine and safe, and is what Gateway actually recommends you do and use even when using A9LH.

!~Getting Black Screen After Dragon Logo and After Following This Guide~! (PLEASE READ)
Sounds like someone hasn't properly removed their EmuNAND//RedNAND with EmuNAND9. The Black Screen problem is common to people who skipped doing it properly and used a third-party tool like EaseUS or any other partition manager.

Since EmuNAND//RedNAND wasn't removed properly, traces were leftover and GW by default sees it, and tries to boot into this non-existent EmuNAND//RedNAND and fails. So how do we fix it? We use EmuNAND9 to preperly remove traces of it.

Part 5, Section V of the old A9LH guide covers this. However, I will list all relevant steps here.
Link: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide_R...ax)#section-v---removing-rednand-from-your-sd

The new guide also sort of mentions if in this new page, and does show you how to setup EmuNAND9:
Link: https://plailect.github.io/Guide/move-emunand

Files we'll need:
Latest release of EmuNAND9: https://github.com/d0k3/EmuNAND9/releases/latest

1. Copy EmuNAND9.bin from the EmuNAND9.zip to the /luma/payloads/ folder on your SD card and rename EmuNAND9.bin to y_EmuNAND9.bin
2. Backup every file on your SD card to a folder on your computer, all files will be deleted in the following steps
3. Reinsert your SD card into your 3DS
4. Hold (Y) at boot time to open EmuNAND9
5. Go to "SD Format Options...", then select the "Format SD (no EmuNAND)" option, and wait for it to finish
6. Press (B) to return to the menu, then press Select to safely eject your SD Card
7. Put your SD card back into your computer, and copy all the files you backed up previously, back into your SD Card
8. Reinsert your SD card into your 3DS, then press (Start) to reboot

Additional Note: You will still have to look into BootCTR9 if for some reason you want GW to be the default, as opposed to Luma3DS. This tutorial is meant more for the people who want Luma3DS as their main//default, and want to use Luma3DS' payload chainloader to boot into GW Mode.
Go to the following link for the tutorial on setting up GW as your main with BootCTR9.

A step to replace it? What do you mean? To set one up? Well, ehhh. I mean I guess I could add it for people who really want the GW recommended setup method.

As for your black-screen issue, do you see the GW Dragon?

I fixed it with vgw_2 and some other file, I forget.

I am a bit confused, I followed this guide all the through through and I am not seeing the "Red Dragon" logo for Gateway, when I hold Down, it's definitely booting to gateway as I can use my backups and emuNAND, however the splash screen doesn't come up. I followed the "Gateway Logo (Recommend for Everyone - SysNAND Only & GW EmuNAND User"
part of the tutorial. Sorry if this is a silly question, I am not sure where it went wrong.

You sure you didn't use the v2gw-de-init file? I have one of my systems on EmuNAND, and it does indeed show the Dragon Logo.

Ok I'm a bit confused I was sent here (I was the OP in this brief thread: https://gbatemp.net/threads/installing-cfw-with-gateway-post-tubehax.449392/#post-6850924). Good news after using Decrypt9 I have completed Plailect's guide and successfully updated the FW with homebrew launcher, luma updater installed through the FBI CIA installer (Sys 11.2.0). I installed everything with my 2gb SD so when it came to your walk-though Cerise I'm a bit lost, do I duplicate the folders onto my XD-SD (32gb) Gateway red cart so I can dual boot? I'm a bit of a newbie, I used R4 carts in the past with my old DS but I think I'm a bit lost :/

In Plailect's guide during the system update section (while installing arm9loaderhax) I had to disable my DNS address setting (to "auto") does that increase my risk of being bricked? Should I worry about playing my physical copy of Moon online? Do I need to block these URLs through my router to be safe? Thanks in advance :)

GW can't patch those files, you'll need clean untouched ones.

The files in the main post go on your 3DS SD Card. Not the red card. You'll need to play your copy of Moon in Luma3DS, since it looks like GW doesn't support it right now.

Sorry for keeping bothering you, but that applies to each one of those files? I can't really go online without the new LocalFriendCodeSeed_B and i have like 30gb of games, if i were to create an emunand with the untouched files for gateway i'd need to format the SD, right?
Yeah, creating an EmuNAND formats the SD Card. So backup the contents of your SD Card prior to doing that.

As for the files. Well I know they don't patch SecureInfo, and why really old region changing guides made you get an untouched donor fille. Since in those early days CFW didn't patch that directly. GW still doesn't do sig patches on it. But for the rest of stuff, I don't know, they may work.

I wasn't trying to boot Moon through GW. I have a physical copy and was just double checking that since I have installed Luma homebrew will I need to take precautions by blocking URLs through my router or using another DNS while online playing my physical cart (so I don't find myself bricked or updating). I just want to use GW to play some rare NDS roms that I have carried over from my DS R4 card (since I can use other homebrew functions like themes through Luma). What goes onto the red card to launch boot GW when Luma has been installed, since the sys firmware has updated during the Luma process to sys 11.2.0 (from 9.2.0) does that mean I can't install the custom GW3D ... firmware (http://www.maxconsole.com/maxconsole_files/gateway/GW-v3-7-1.pdf). Is my Gateway Cart useless? I was told to follow the Plailect guide since the gateway.pdf guide is pretty useless (Tubehax no longer works). I have a virgin micro-SD and unused GW cart I need to format and install a launcher for an old 3DS (that now has Luma on it) - what launch files go into the XD-SD you insert into the cart? I can follow your guide to make Luma GW compatible by adding files onto the SD but are there files/folders I need to update on the micro-SD (ie. on the GW side)? I'm a bit annoyed and confused but thanks for helping :)

For the red card, you only need your .3DS/.3DZ files on it. For your blue card which plays .NDS games, you put the required files to use it on there, which is provided in the GW release zip on their website. You'll need to use Luma3DS for the blue card though, since it doesn't work in GW Mode.

As for GW3D. You're essentially booting into that CFW when you use your red card and have followed this tutorial and hold that button. Unless you like using cheats for 3DS games or must still use .3ds roms, then it's pretty useless for some people.

OK I have followed all the steps and after following this step
"8. You are now done. If you followed this tutorial, holding DPAD-DOWN at boot time, will load up Gateway Mode."
I get a black screen. I assume it's booting nothing because it's trying to access GW but GW cart isn't inserted. I haven't configured GW yet, are there any threads on here or 2016 Youtube tutorials in setting up GW. Is it possible to set up GW now I have updated my FW to sys 11.2.0 (from downgraded FW 2.xxx through Decrypt which was originally before all this OFW 9.2.0) as per the Plailect walkthrough? I started out with the GW pdf guide on their site but as I said it was pretty useless pretty quickly. I want to set it up so I can launch my NDS roms through booting GW. I am a bit of a n00b and I greatly appreciate your help thus far.

I did place the 'Blue Card' folders (Blue Card R4i and Blue Card fix) extracted from the 3.7.2 beta release GW zip onto a micro-SD inserted it into the Blue cart and pressed d-pad down before power on but still black screen (no menus) do I need another launcher.dat on the micro-sd (blue cart) on top of the one in the SD? I'm guessing that launcher boots Luma while the GW launcher.dat boots GW?

Since it black screened I turned on (without pressing down) went to the homebrew launcher then went through a9lh to launch but no gamecard was detected (when I have roms on the root folder of the micro-sd on the red-cart I inserted). So I think I have to further configure my micro-sd so Luma or the SD can detect that I am operating with GW

EDIT: OK I think I know what my problem is, once I installed HBL/Luma etc. I had to go back to Step 7 in the walkthrough (http://scmods.com/gw_guide/GW-3-7-1.pdf) and follow the Menuhax_manager instructions

http://i.imgur.com/F45r7pTr.jpg

It appears to be a common issue. I went to https://github.com/yellows8/3ds_homemenuhax/issues/218#issuecomment-259598885d.bin downloaded and renamed the config file menuhaxmanager_input_payload.bin and put it in the menuhax folder (under 3ds on my SD) but I still could not get past the screen above. Is it still tying to connect to ttps://yls8.mtheall.com/ which is down? If I have the config file already (correctly named in the relevant subdirectory) why would menuhax manager still be doing this (trying to download the config file from a broken server)?

Any ideas on what to do next? :(
Oh boy. You really don't know what you're doing or why.

So let's see if I can break it down for you. The Red Card and it's CFW, GW3D, are only to play .3DS/.3DZ games, and for the cheat menu for 3DS games. Got it? While in this CFW or in GW Mode as it's called. The Blue Card is useless. It doesn't work in this mode. It has never worked, because GW never fixed it.

Launcher.dat goes on your SD Card of the 3DS and it's used for the Red Card and it's CFW. It does nothing for the Blue Card.

Now, since you want to use your Blue Card, since it's the thing that plays NDS Roms, then you'll need only the contents insidde of the Blue Card R4i folder. The blue card fix is for some outdated thing and it will actually break Luma3DS if you install it. Once you have the contents of the Blue Card R4i folder on your Blue Card's microSD, that's it! You don't need anything else, apart from your DS Roms on it. You boot into Luma3DS and just insert the blue card. And you play it.

This guide is for people who want to use their Red Card.

And if you're black screening, then IDK. Is the Launcher.dat on the root of your SD Card of your 3DS? Did you properly remove your EmuNAND from the 3DS' SD Card?

And you can't launch GW Mode from the homebrew launcher. The method in the first post, is the only way to properly do it. Any other method will fail.

Edit: And I hope my message isn't coming off as mean, I am just trying to explain what's going on. I get that you probably don't, and I don't fault you for that.

Not at all! I am the first to admit I am more than a bit confused with the way GW operates. I have a bad feeling that because I updated my sys FW to 11.2 (following Plailect's guide) now I can't access GW (but can't I downgrade my FW with MenuHax manager but the server is down for requests, I'm a bit confused). I am testing out my red card. I have the launcher.dat on the root of my micro-sd extracted from the GW zip (as well as the launcher.dat on the root of my SD) and a .3ds test file (Mario backup) but when I press down upon power on I do get the GW dragon but it just has "Booting GW: FASTBOOT: SYSNAND" You want to boot GW FASTBOOT: SYSNAND? Press L+R+SELECT to continue". When I do that it just black screen 1-2 seconds then it goes to the 3ds splash screen home menu (where I can click on the HBL but no GW launcher or game options). Did I miss installing a cia or SYSNAND files on my Micro-SD?

Edit: This doesn't do anything: "Notes: To Boot into the GW Menu: Hold L+Select, as soon as you see the Dragon Logo." It still just goes to the same as before "Booting GW: FASTBOOT: SYSNAND..." then when I press L+R+Select it goes to the 3DS home screen where "nothing is inserted in the game card slot" and it gives me the same options as if GW red cart was not inserted.

I am starting to think that you are a first time GW Owner. In which case, I am not sure why you got one. Since CIA files or using freeShop would be pretty simple. If you got it for cheats, well, I guess that's understandable, it's the number one reason I got mine, even though I do use NTR as well, for other things.

Anywho, I still don't know why are you so hung up on the Homebrew Launcher. Since it has nothing to do with how games are shown on the Red Card.

To see the 3DS games on your Red Card, once you are in the Home Menu, after you have been told to press L+R+Select and you have done that, and have landed in the Home Menu. Just Press Select, and the GW OSD will pop up. That's it.
There's a manual on the Gateway3DS site that sort of explains how to launch game backups.

If for some reason you wanted to see GW Menu, which I don't see why you'd need it, once you see the Dragon Logo, you hold L+Select and it'll show the menu. Again, there's hardly anything there. For dumping games, maybe, I could see that, as the only use.

I used to use cheats with my Gateway when I was playing MHGen (didn't know the maps and didn't want to run around like a fool instead of hunting so I cheat to always have the map and autotracker) but now I don't even do that anymore... Well, I don't regret buying it back in the days, otherwise I'd probably have had problems while downgrading to 9.2 instead of always having my 3DS on 9.2.

Decrypt9 can do that too, with more options (like converting to cia or blanking out private stuff).
