Are you kidding me? I've been saying this for years now, with the way gaming is going, there's going to be a whole new video game crash of [insert year here]. There are beginning to be too many consoles available. WAAAY too many. And sure, there are going to be people who say "I think having a choice is a great thing, and it's from Valve" and whatever. But don't you think that maybe that's what people were saying before the first game crash?

Are you kidding me? I've been saying this for years now, with the way gaming is going, there's going to be a whole new video game crash of [insert year here]. There are beginning to be too many consoles available. WAAAY too many. And sure, there are going to be people who say "I think having a choice is a great thing, and it's from Valve" and whatever. But don't you think that maybe that's what people were saying before the first game crash?

The first videogame crash wasn't exclusively caused by the amount of consoles alone; the problem lied more with the fact that many of these consoles were cheaply made imitations of the competition. The market currently is pretty varied, and whatever Valve has up their slaves (if they have anything at all) will assuredly be unique enough to stand out from the pack.

Plus, the glut of cheaply made, quickly produced shovelware was, arguably, a bigger factor in the crash (Pac-Man and ET, anybody?) than anything else. I think Valve won't have too much trouble avoiding that pitfall.

hmm... I'm not so sure. If you think about it, until the gamecube/xbox/ps2 era, there's ALWAYS been tons of systems... After Nintendo "saved the industry" as they say with the NES, we went through another decade with TONS of consoles of varying degrees of success. Aside from Sega, Nintendo, and Sony, we had a 64 bit atari console, Neo-Geo, and a bunch of other random consoles that no one remembers.

And besides, we already have something similar to this with the OnLive "console" for cloud based games. but if you think about it, this "Steam Engine" or whatever it'll be called will be nothing but a dedicated computer for gaming. Think about it: If I wanted to, I could easily attach my gaming rig or laptop to an hd tv in my living room, and it would be more or less the same thing (albeit, a bit more of a hassle). this is basically just an "easier, "sexier" way of doing it, so to speak.

And, if anything DOES indeed come out of this, I think it would mean more of a shift to "upgradeable" consoles in the future. It wouldn't really kill gaming as much as transform it. you know what i mean?

But that's just my opinion.
