Today I present you Dragon Quest 8 3ED.

These versions have the same TitleID as the clean game.
If you use the .3DS or .CIA, your save file will be overwritten, and erased.
So be sure to backup your current save BEFORE start the .3DS or install the .CIA.
You can of course inject back your save from the clean game on the modded version.

V1 AND BUGS

It's a V1, it means the Undub should be fully ready at ~95%
But there could still be some voices in English.
In this case, help us by saying where you find the english voices.
If possible, post also a screenshot of the dialogue to help us to find it.
You might also find some crash at some points of the game.
But it's likely not possible, we have only found 3 crash in 40h of played game and it's fixed.
I beat the game, did all hidden ends and beat the hidden boss, no new crash to report.

A V2 will be posted once ALL voices are correctly undubbed (100% Final Version).

CREDITS AND HELP

Orchestrated: Mainly by @Asia81, and @davhuit.
Uncensored: Files by @DarkSynopsis and @Canzah. Thanks guys!
Undubbed: Mainly by @davhuit, and @Asia81.

Umm this may sound embarassing but what is undub? Are you muting all the dialog? I never heard of projects that removes speech.

Also i honestly dunno much about the umm orchrista.... (Spell check fail) but i know about the censorship since censor gaming mentioned members of GBATEMP Trying to fix it. Still what the story behind the changes from JAP to EUR/USA?

Sorry that note was for my spell check not detecting i ws trying to spell "Orchestrated" instead left it as "orchrista" Cause it wasn't trying to spell the word right. IT wasn't directed at you, nothing was wrong with what you said. :P

Anyway, still what was wrong with the orchestra? I mean i havn't played the 3DS game but only the ps2 and little of the mobile android port, it seem fine. So i mean i failed to see what you mean. Also i still dunno why someone would undub the audio, is supposed to be localized so people don't have to read subtitles... (In this case is still text to read with the speech so this argument is fail)

The undub replace the english voices with the japanese voices and replace the english musics (low quality) with the japanese musics (high quality).

@Sonic Angel Knight : Some people prefer the japanese voices, often people for which english is not the native language (english dub is already a foreign language for them so they often prefer the japanese ones for japanese games).

Even with the english dub, you still have to read the subtitles as the game is not fully voiced, all important dialogs. Lots of NPC dialogs doesn't have voice at all.

Because peoples (including me) want play with japanese voices instead english voices.

I wasn't aware of this issue, but why would the game release with bad quality between regions?

I understand the undub thing a bit better, and the censorship i already was ware of but the music i do not know, so much.

Because it seems the japanese music composer refused to give the rights to use the japanese musics with the USA/EUR version for either DQ7 and DQ8. It seems he prefer to keep it as an exclusivity for the japanese versions.

The same also happened with DQ7 by the way. The japanese musics were also played and recorded with an orchestra, which is not the case for USA/EUR versions.

USA/EUR musics versions for both games (DQ7/DQ8) are made the classic way musics are often made in video games, with a computer.

Japanese musics were played and recorded with a real orchestra for most of them, which give a real difference between both.

But if you prefer english voices, there are already some versions which only restore the japanese music, Canzah's version for example do that.

When I say "low/high quality", it was to explain it easily. USA/EUR music quality are fine, of course. It's just that those musics were made with a computer so it sound a lot different than the japanese version.

Well, that does seem odd, or unfair.... weird even. O_O

I mean the ps2 is a perfect localization conversion, so i dunno why 3DS would suffer so much just for localization. I had thought it was based on the mobile port but i didn't play enough of it to compare the different versions. Maybe is possible to data mine that one in comparison?

Still i just dunno, i knew from the moment this game was announced for 3DS things like this would happen and the music issue was not what i expected, we all expected the sexy appeal characeters to get extra layers but music is just a bit odd. Kinda reminds me of sonic cd 2011, how the japanese soundtrack for the intro is no longer being sung.

At least, we got a localization of those games.

DQ7 was released in USA but never in Europe. The first DQ game officially released in Europe was DQ8 on PS2.

Since then, Europe got several versions released and localized, DQ 7-8-9 (3DS), DQ 4-5-6 (DS). Still missing DQ 1-2-3 but those exist on GameBoy Color and the system is region free so at least, they are playable in english.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though

    I appreciate the insight!
