New Nintendo financial report lays out 2022 schedule, reveals hardware sales down 20%

Nintendo has released their financial report for the fiscal year 2022, stretching from April 2021 to March 2022, and, as always, it reveals some interesting sales figures and plans for the future. The most immediate numbers are sales figures for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles (the standard edition, Lite, and OLED) which show a 20% decrease from the previous fiscal year (23.06 million units down from 28.83 million). While this technically hits Nintendo's sales expectations, that number has been slowly lowered over the course of the fiscal year. Nintendo initially forecasted to sell 25.5 million hardware units in FY2022, but dropped that number to 24 million in November, then again to 23 million in February. In a document accompanying the financial report, Nintendo projects 21 million hardware unit sales for FY2023, citing the semiconductor shortage as the culprit.

Despite these issues, the Nintendo Switch continues to outsell the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. In the same fiscal year, the PlayStation 5 sold 11.5 million units, bringing total sales to 19.3 million. (Notably, Sony expects PS5 sales to increase to 18 million in the next fiscal year, contrary to Nintendo's expectations.) Exact sales figures haven't been released for the Xbox Series X|S, but NPD analyst Mat Piscatella reports that, while Xbox won the last two quarters in hardware revenue, Nintendo still sold more units in that same period.

Luckily, Nintendo's software sales continue to be strong, up 1.8% from last year. There were several high-performing games this year, including Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, which hit 14.65 million units, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which sold 12.64 million units with two fewer months on the market, showing that Game Freak's deviation from the series formula has paid off. (For reference, less traditional Pokémon spin-off, New Pokémon Snap, sold 2.4 million units.)

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, during its fourth year of release, sold another 9.94 million units, though these numbers were almost certainly boosted by new DLC tracks. Metroid Dread has also emerged as the best selling game in the series, shipping 2.9 million units since its launch in October, edging out previous series best Metroid Prime at 2.8 million.

Speaking of Metroid, in a section laying out Nintendo's biggest upcoming releases, the long-delayed Metroid Prime 4 is still only given a release date of TBA. Advance Wars 1+2: Reboot Camp, which appears to be finished but was delayed at the start of the Russia-Ukraine war due to "recent world events," is also still listed as TBA. With the sequel to Breath of the Wild delayed to Spring 2023, the following games are expected to carry Nintendo through the end of 2022: Mario Strikers Battle League (June 10), Fire Emblem: Three Hopes (June 24), Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak (June 30), Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (July 29), Splatoon 3 (September 9), Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (late 2022), and Bayonetta 3 (2022).

Bayonetta 3 is a notable inclusion on the list, as it has also had a worryingly-long and quiet development, having been announced in December 2017 and since then only getting a brief mention in a February 2019 Nintendo Direct and its first gameplay trailer last September.

I am pretty sure damn near everyone who wants a Switch, owns a Switch. The fact that the OLED wasn’t a proper hardware upgrade meant that not many were going to go out and buy it to replace their current Switch. There’s been a lot of questionable choices made by Nintendo these days.

to be fair. even if people where jumping up to buy the oled model it would mean a lot if used systems hitting the market therefore lowering sales for regular systems...so it balances out in a way

nintendo is stupid for two things.

1. not allowing save's to be moved to SD Cards.
2. not allowing pokemon games to allow cloud saving.

i would say a third thing but it's not on topic.

i swear if i could play online and play a hacked switch online without owning 2 switch's it would be grand. you failed this gen in my eyes.

They'll have to do some weird form factor, like dual screens, in order for the switch's succesor to be successful. but still backward compatible, hopefully. they've finally got some competition in the same space

and it's getting about that time, been 6 years now. should be announced this year, next year at the latest.

I miss dual screens. Was one of the greatest things ever (especially for rpg's where maps and items could show on bottom screen instead of taking over the game screen). Guess we'll never get them back given how they want to focus on being a hybrid (that was, supposedly, not going to replace a proper handheld).

20% less than a huge year last year isn't a big deal.

Everyone bought Switches last year due to covid and the fact that ps5 and xboxs were impossible to get.
Because of Covid? Not sure how you came to that conclusion.

Last year Nintendo released the OLED version of a five year old console. It looks nice, but it was released too late.

However, if it's someone's first Nintendo Switch then it's fine. Amazing game system with a superb catalog of exclusives and multiplats.

Mario Odyssey is a must.

here's a good idea for them to help them increase switch mini sales: allow nintendo switch mini hardware to do wifi-TV connection. So people will still find a way to play on the big TV even with lag. So the original switch will serve it's arcade-y purpose of connecting controllers and what not on the base while having low latency.

@The Real Jdbye, I thought about that and I have blank DVD's and Blurays but honestly after like 90 songs I just listen to it a couple of hundred times toss it out and burn something else or have like 2-3 CD's. Florida here the heat in the car tends to ruin the CD's after like a few months even commercial pressed ones don't last too long.
